Badhat means gradual development of raga. I see also the use of the word Upaj in case of Dhrupad, meaning to gradually unfold the raga.

Yes. Yesteryears saw such alapanas. I don't know if such are going on today. Today it seems to be more like an up - down the scale rave race.
Alapana has the following parts (acc to carnatic music treatises ) :-
akshiptika ( the first few phrases that give out the raga colour - have to be signature phrases rendered with bhavam ), ragavardhani ( this is the most beautiful part where the alapana traverses leisurely , exploring places around small sets of notes with meanderings , jaarus ) , makaranda ( stacking of brigas across the raga) .

And this is one of the very few alapanas sung that way -

What a thanam ! Actually , no one sings like this today . They can , if they emulate him.
And this is the kind of voice quality and tone needed for carnatic music. Today's youngsters ( most of them ) seem to have voices that are akin to cine muisic voices - and they call it carnatic music , making you sick ! .

Contrast this 30 min shanmukhapriya to Abhishek's 30 min khamas.
