yes - that was one of the first LPs I had. The kannada gowla was lovely and perhaps this is the reason this is a favourite raga of mine nowadays!

We all know Sri.Papanasam Sivan , as a music composer. He was also a singer but I have not heard any recordings of his singing. 'Thyagabhoomi' was a great reformist novel by Kalki. It was brought to the screen by the legendary director Sri.K.Subramanyam. It was in that film that D.K.Pattammal made her debut as a playback singer of Patriotic theme. Vemnbaar MaNivaNNan is a famous uploader of old film rare songs like this one. The song is said to be in Ragam Lathangi. and the lyrics are by Papanasam Sivan and he sings it in his own voice. A rare clip indeed.

Here is VembAr MaNivaNNan giving the introduction, himself in Tamizh.

Unable to post an image of the letter here.

Shri VAK Ranga Rao, the famous collector, wrote in 1991, the year Smt Rajam Pushpavanam passed away, that he collected 78 rpm records and that he has 7 of her 78 rpm records with him.

The letter was posted in the forum a few years ago. Link is below....

The following post gives utube links to about ten of Smt.Rajam Venkataraman 'plates'. ( She was daughter of the famed Pushpavanam, of the two decades ( 1900-1920). Sti.Pushpavanam was Madurai MaNi Iyer's 'periyappaa.( father's elder brother).

viewtopic.php?p=322901#p322901

Smt Rajam was active in the Chennai CM circuits in 1930-1940 decade. She was two years younger to Smt.MS and of the same age as Smt.DKP.
She stopped giving stage performances just when Thamizh country was getting the best from Smt.MS, Smt.DKP and Smt.NCV and VV Sadagopan through music films. She continued however as AIR artiste.

She did not act in any film but was a pioneer Music director in one film.

Here is a Bengali song, penned by D.L.ROY father of Dilip Kumar Roy.
The song Is dear to the heart of every Bengali, young or old. Though it was written with Bengal-undivided of pre-partion years, on the eve of 1907 rising all over Bengal against Curzon's partition of Bengal, surprisingly, every line of this great poem fits with every state of India.
A lovely poem made more wonderful by the great rendition by Dk. ROY and Smt. MS , much before India attained Independence. This song with its tune is sung by every Bengali and deserves to be the National Anthem of India. It does not have any religious overtones.

This is a 78 rpm record ( the other side has Vande Matharam"}
The song can be heard at the following page.
It has English translation and tamil translation too.

Thank you. for the information. though I am intrigued that Smt.KBS a nationalist , has chosen to sing this! Perhaps, the lyrics are not too specific to the coronation? Can we have translation of the lyrics perhaps?

about p-32
@Govindaswamy
Likely Sir, though Tagore refuted hotly and the wording does not explicitly mention the emperor.
------
Though Vande Maatharam of Bankim and Dhano Dhanya pushpavaraan' of DL Roy ( both rendered by Smt.MS and D.K.Roy) would have been better choice for our National anthem.
--------
Here are some quotes from wiki.
----
The years are very significant. The high-tide of revolutionary upsurge against the Partition of Bengal by Curzon, ( begun in 1905) and the swadesi movement ( led by Anushilan Samithi, Juganthar Samith, Aurbindo Ghosh, Lokamanya and in Taminadu by VOChithambaram Pilai and Subramanya Bharathi), had ebbed due to brutal suppression by the British Government. .
And Tagore is not known to have played any prominent role in that revolutionary movement and the Congress itself was full of moderates- even after the historic split in Surath Congress in 1908.
--------
<quotes>
Translation by Tagore, dated 28 February 1919 at the Besant Theosophical College.[25]
Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindhu,
Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Odisha
and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of Vindhya and the
Himalayas,
Mingles in the music of Ganga and Yamuna
and is chanted by
The waves of the Indian sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India's destiny.
Victory, victory, victory to thee.[26]
=============================================
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jana_Gana_Mana
============================================

On 10 November 1937, Tagore wrote a letter to Pulin Bihari Sen about the controversy. That letter in Bengali can be found in Tagore's biography Rabindrajibani, volume II page 339 by Prabhatkumar Mukherjee.
"A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Bidhata [ed. God of Destiny] of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense."[42][43]
Again in his letter of 19 March 1939 Tagore writes:[44]
"I should only insult myself if I cared to answer those who consider me capable of such unbounded stupidity as to sing in praise of George the Fourth or George the Fifth as the Eternal Charioteer leading the pilgrims on their journey through countless ages of the timeless history of mankind." (Purvasa, Phalgun, 1354, p. 738.)

In the thread in musicians section- K.B.SundaraambaL, I found your valuable in put about the lyricist of a very famous song in Todi by KBS

The youtube link given by sri.vkv is not working.
It is a very nice song. Can you please help in locating and adding it to this thread?

Smt.D.K.P. did not act in any films . She however, sang a few fine songs as background music for about 9 films in the period from 1937 to 1950. She sang patriotic songs only, with a rare exception.
The rarest of her film songs was in a film titled 'LAVANYA'. in which she sang a Revolutionary Socialist song. !
The song with lyrics in Thamizh are available in

Is it a PurandaraDasa kruthi? Can we have the lyrics and meaning?
Is the raagam information correct?

Ji, The imagery in the lyrics is stunning! Ant and fire, dust and Sun .

The raagam is labelled as Darbari Kanada. ARI has sung it in Kaanada.
This also must be Kaanada. May I have confirmation?

kalidas upload
gramaphone records

his is a set of 11 gramophone records by V V Sadagopan whose details I have given in another post of his recordings. A highly versatile vidwan , he had a wide repertoire of Tamil krtis besides the krtis of the trinity. He was also well versed in the Alwar paasurams. A golden voice added to his music. A tragedy that he did not attain sufficient recognition. His 'Nadamadi Tirinda' of Papavinasa Mudaliar, Endavedukondu O Raghava & Periyazhwar paasuram are the highlights here. Not that others are below par!
These records already find a place in Sri Raju Asokan's YouTube postings & he gracefully agreed that I could post them in this channel too

Found this released in last two days:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnaSKlQxn-w - Sri S.G Kittappa - Amma Ravamma

tulasamma lost her atItam :lol: But his voice and briga carried everything those days, seems like! :D

And that label , Oh my.. Vocal(Male) , Telugu and all that... a very typical western gaze on the music. Very anthropoligical view. ellavaTrilum oru maanudaviyal parvai! :x

Thank you. All the 78 rpm records have been uploaded by Vid.Kalidas.
( MS, NCV) and for DKP records, almost all of them have been
uploaded and placed in archives by sankarkrish blog.
All the thamizh songs of GNB have been included in the 'we need more tamil songs' thread in general discussion.

-
NCV- Parukku Chumayachu- will be a new find. To save labour, of converting it to mp4 , and uploading to youtube, , such songs may kindly be uploaded to archives. and link shared here. as mp3
