BA/BFA in music

Post by DivyaVinod »

Hi,
Need some guidance on the BA/BFA in music courses available in many universities. Is it good to opt this course or do we have any other course which gives us more knowledge on carnatic music ?

Thanks,

You need to elaborate what you want? If you want to learn sing better or understand the theory better? Do want to just explore or go in depth doing research. The basic problem is first to understand all the aspects of Music. This may not be found in one place or in one degree. Degrees are created by academic people who think what should be taught, but seldom write authoritative (not just quoting Narada Vijnana)and practical lessons that illustrate the theory - not just saying pradi-madyamam, upper nishadam etc., rather what is the bhava or emotion that is conveyed and how the sahitya has to be sung to bring that emotion etc.

There is no one great place to learn this. Thus, what you learn at the varna level is different at the Kirtana, then to Alaphana, then to sangati and elaboration, creativity and so on. So, before you decide on a course, unless you want to be a Govt. school Music teacher, the question you have answered needs to be explored by you and no one place of document that can satisfy your quest. This is not to criticize your or your motivation, but to tell you that is the case in every subject – which is a sad thing. Some times you have to innovate.
I know this is a useless advice, but to know the reality will be helpful to avoid disappointment. If you ask Snjay, he learned more from Nadaswara Vidwan than in any degree. His brigas are mimicry of that deep understanding which no school degree teaches. Aslo, Indian degree syllabus are not dynamic as much as, in other subjects. A good placeis to contact Charulatha Mani in Australia who knows more.
