here is a rtp , which for many years, did not have a raga label
attached to it ,in our books.
only recently , someone suggested the name Raga Vardhini .Since I have not heard
any other rendering in this raga ,it still remains a blind spot.

Each time I listen to this , the fascination grows. So many beautiful
moments,those lovely twists and turns,
it is pure SOLO,
pure DWARAM.

I have not tinkered with the bit rate for saving on download time.
My good friend Nageswaran of West Mambalam grappled with a difficult tape
for a good six months to master the quality.
It would be a great injustice to him and this track to give in to
such considerations.

I would love to have the experts confirm whether it is raga Vardhini indeed
, its nearest relatives and info about other renderings in this raga..

happy listening !

Thyagaraja has composed
Manasaa manasamarthya in Raga Vardhini. Somebody must have rendered it!

parvathi,
looks ike the tmk track is a copyrighted one.
i have downloaded it and get a message to this effect.

if it is so, i suggest that we refrain from uploading such commercial tracks.

since i have uploaded quite a lot, i have tried my best to check out on this aspect before uploading.(i restrict to small excerpts only wherever necessary)
i have been wise to this angle onle recently after some feedbacks.

that is the only way we can keep ourselves clear on these matters and project an image that we are all genuine rasikas and are only pushing technology to the limits to help in a broader understanding , rather than any other motive that may be attributed to us, or to this forum.
i hereby solicit more views on this issue so as to keep the process on track.

Absolutely I agree with you. We should not upload copyrighted materials. I was uncomfortable seeing tmk here especially a lengthy one. If for purpose of illustration a short segment is quoted I believe one would not mind as we always do in scientific referencing.

I would also request parvathi too to delete the link

Let us keep this facility clean and above board :D

Hi Kulkarni Sir and CmLover Sir,
that's not a copyrighted version...
The concert was held here in Shiva - Vishnu Temple and i recorded it myself...Iam just wondering why that showed up that way...
Anyways,i don't think that's a problem..but if you want me to remove it,i can do that.
Kulkarni Sir...thanks for the Vardhini RTP...It's a Vakra janya
of Kokilapriya..iam yet to hear that..
Thanks,
Parvati.

Unless you had the permission to record from tmk it is copyrighted! He should not blame you for pirating his performance. Nor should chembai have problems for hosting it at this site!

coolkarni

Is there an equivalent in HM for RTP?

meena

Do we know anything regarding the historical origins of RTP?

parvathi..

i am sorry that my post did not make allowances for this possibility.
i was just eager to avoid unpleasantness, especially since you had admitted that you were new to this forum.
i still feel this rapidshare business adds a new dimension to exchanges over a forum like this.(words alone can never express the beauty of this music)
All my life I have been listening to Viruttams , more so in a tired fashion ,since they come as a breather in the latter part of the concerts. But as I work my way through various artists on this section, and keep reading the reply posts, i cannot help feeling that a new dimension is being added to my awareness.
I am sure it must be the same with all of us who visit this site.
Elsewhere-in a different forum- I read that a separate section on Laya was not found feasible since it would not allow much scope.
In a forum like this , I feel it is definitely feasible.
So the bottomline is "how far can we go with our uploads, without disturbing the equillibrium"
That was the reason for my immediate reaction.
as far as deleting it is concerned, since the track cannot be heard by anybody, the answer is quite simple.

thanks cml for looking up!

More write-up on RTP:
DELETED

Did u know:
"Smt late MLV probably has sung the most number of ragas as RTPs."
DELETED
"Sree Patnam Subramanya Iyer He could sing rare ragas elaborately and he was a pastmaster in improvisation. His favourite raga was Begada, and he was known also as Begada Subramanya Iyer. It is said that he sang a Raagam Tanam Pallavi at the Mysore Court for three days in this raaga, with each aspect of the RTP taking up a day."

i will need some time to answer this.
the closest thing i have come across is the alaap, jhor, jhala in the instrumental music and the Tom Noms which are done after the alapana in the Dhrupad style of singing.

Lovely! meena
for those interesting tidbits. The first one contains audio example by Sanjay too! Now if we can find a sample demonstrating the 'mathematics' it will be great. I guess we must look at TNS for a good contemporary example. Or perhaps Alathoor for an older one! While I will look for it I hope others too will pitch in.

This is a time where Chembai can help :D

coolkarni

Please don't spend too much time on this. it is just a curiosity since I have felt that RTP is a distinctive feature of CM! I may be wrong !

Of course. I recently got a good collection of Alathur Brothers concerts with all their customary laya fireworks. My broadband internet is down, and my dialup account would take me ages to upload the MP3s. Please wait for some time till I am able to replace my DSL modem, after which I will be able to participate and upload recordings easily.

Also, both parts are identical (that is both have have the R and the T and are 17:55 long). Not that I am complaining :) It would be very nice if you could post some portion of the Pallavi too.

while we wait for rapidshares recovery,
i have uploaded TRS's Lec Dem on Demystifying Pallavi singing through mega upload in four parts.
it is a 140 minute long lecture.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=19R7IH8B
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=19RDPJNM

We can use this opprtunity to make a complete assessment of megaupload.
Hence all feedback on this alternative mode would be most welcome.

megaupload seems to work OK, except that it is slow. Now that rapidshare is back in business we can use one or the other as a stand-by. I have started the thread 'Somu' with your initial uploads. Pl add comments if any. Let us also await feedback from others if they have any problems.

Pl. continue the lec-dem uploads as they are very educational. Thanks for your efforts. We are all ready to pitch in when needed (I mean by being at the receiving end :D )

Once the Somu thread starts going good there will be a flood of traffic :D . Now that raju is taking the "heat" off all Somu lovers will be flocking to "cool"karanIya shades :cheesy:

rapidshare tells you the number of downloads. Megaupload does not! Mega does take a long time to download. But that should not matter since one can be doing sometning else during the download. Also mega does not have a one hour waiting time as well as cut -off after some use. I agree consumer preferance should decide our choice. Let us wait for some of them express their views. It is nice to have the option of using either of them!

kulkarni sir,

thankyou very much for the lecdem. got all the parts . megaupload has been smooth for me. like cml sir pointed out, we can start them and do other things - thus working around the slowness (just now, i didnt experience that slowness even -was quick). at this time, it seems preferable to the 1hr wait in rapidshare, for me.

regards

coolkarni

Post by coolkarni »

looks like we have to zero in on the slowness.
i will next try splitting into 15 mb tracks.rather than 25-30 mb ones.
that way you can be listening to the first half while downloading the second half.

FYI: It wasn't slow for me either. I was able to download the 4 large files of TSR's lec-dem in about 5 min each. Mega was having some issues with the speed last week (according to a note at their site) and they seem to have fixed it.

Coolkarni Sir,
Do you have Dr. S. Ramanathan's or Dr. S. R. Janakiraman's lectures? I would be grateful if you can upload a couple of them. Thanks for the TRS lecture.

coolkarni

Post by coolkarni »

S ramnathan.-negative
I feel like kicking myself for missing out on those "Music for the layman " program of his.
SRJ also negative.
Though I will be on the lookout for these.
I only now have
Pinakapanis 15 hour discussion with a friend on various subjects in CM like How to appreciate, various ragas and their famous exponents etc.
S rajams Demo on Koteeswra Iyer 90 minutes- no not the commercial cd with his 72 renderings.this is more of a talk.
Kalyanramans series of concerts on 72 kritis .. not sure if it was a commercially released one.Any one who knows about it please advise me.(CLOSE TO 30 HOURS WHERE HE TALKS ABOUT THE RAGA AND KRITHI AND THEN RENDERS IT)
i will put up samples for all of you to decide.

Unless you count the concerts of TRS which are a LEc Dem in Concert format.. elaborate treatement for dasar padas, alapanas for ragas like Mond, scintillating RTPs in Revathi etc
if you are Ok with my 30-60 mb quota per day , I have no problems in uploading them all.

Thanks for the various lecdems, im beginning to understand the pallavi speciality more now...

Just a note on megaupload, it works pretty good at night times (im in CST) for me, like i was able to download the TRS lectures at 140 kb/s. During day it was like 20-30 kb/s.

i wasnt able to download the TRS-lecdem-Pallavi Part 1b.mp3... Seems to be some problem with downloading that one alone.. Any help appreciated...
