Lets try this. Please post your favorite song that starts with a,A.

One song per post please and if possible why you like it (personal, analytical etc.). Please include raga, tala and composer info if you have it, and info on where people can listen to it - but watch out for commercial recording abuse!

PS: I am still making my list (for A), after which I will narrow down my choice :) - so far in the list I have akhilANDESwari, aruNAchalanAtham, AragimpavE, alai pAyudE (nostalgia driven ) etc.

Here is a (probably not fully comprehensive) listing of the krithis by Trinity (and others) which can be used to jog your memory:

Dikhsitar: http://www.geocities.com/vienna/strasse ... shitar.htm

Made my choice - which was none of the above :)

allarulu koriyaga - Sankarabharanam - annamacharya. Just love the lilting tune which seems to match the gist of the song.

My pick anurAgamulEni- (T)
the part "antara jnAnulakerukE kAni" is so thought provoking and musically too reaches that height.
Listen to Soumya singing this

My choice is Anandamruthakarshani in Amrithavarshini ragam. The song (maybe the ragam as well) is at once seems both leisurely and fast paced.

Two contrasting versions

DK Jayaram (serene version) - Specially listen to the NI at the end of pallavi and how VVS's violin joins as an echo. Absolutely amazing. Maybe here is one note that brings the whole song (with reference to the other thread where we discuss about single note!)

http://sangeethamshare.org/sridharan/01-DKJ-VVS-UKS/ ( third song in this link)

Aruna Sairam (fast) - This is a very different version of the song. Very fast paced and as this is mostly a scale based raga, very nice to listen to. If at all you feel down and feel lazy, this version will shake you and put you into being fully alert.

Recently (from the day I heard Sanjay Subrahmanyam sing this in Anna Nagar a couple of months ago) it has been 'anudinamunu kAvumayya' in Begada by Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar - it's been haunting me ever since.

Used to derive unlimited bliss (Anandam) hearing these other ones:
1. Ananda Natesa - Todi by the one and only GNB (MIL has this)
2. Ananda Natana Prakasam in Kedaram by many stalwarts, but especially DKJ
3. Ananda Natam Aduvar Tillai in Poorvi Kalyani by almost anybody (MIL has MLV and MS versions)

Hi ArunK: Great to see that you like Annamayya's composition. Somehow his krithis take a back seat. Another one of his starting with the alphabet A is : "Alakulu chellavu.." listen to the rendering by the Hyderabad Brothers. Simply Great and if you know a bit of Telugu, the meaning of the song is very nice.

Thyagaraja's 'Ada mOdi galade' in Charukesi is a favourite of mine. Madurai Mani Iyer popularised this song. His rendition is available at

:) - Why did I know that my request for "one song per post" would be gleefully ignored?

Come on guys! I know this can be hard but I am requesting you to try to make some tough choices (although, admittedly there is no need to be compelled to make one in such a trivial matter :) ). At least try to keep the list to a maximum of 2-3 as in creme-de-la-creme, not like 10-15!

Thanks - but arasi would win that hands down :)

I like the diversity in opinions here. Some krithis I had not heard (the saraswati one e.g.). In getting to my choice, I just went gut feel - and I still am happy with the choice.

If I had to add a second choice for me, it would be amba nilAyadAkshi (nIlAmbari - MD). I thought of that after I penned down allarulu - I still think allarulu is #1 for me.

Thinking ahead to B, and in a dilemma picking between 2 :) - but I am jumping ahead too fast. Should give more people a chance with a/A for a couple more days?

This is more like an exercise for me. If someone says why they like a particular kriti you tend to go and listen. And having only one favorite makes it easy esp if you give a link. I too heard allarulu for the first time.

Arun,

alarulu kuriyaga came alive for me when I saw Smt. Jayanti Subramanian perform it (there was a video of it on sangeethapriya many moons ago - not sure if it is still available) - I agree that it is a lovely composition, but my choice(s) would be different:

(I had so many, that I 'cheated')

padavarNam - annamE aruginil vA - valaci - Subbudu
kriti - alaipAyudE kaNNA - kAnaDA - OVK
padam - alarSara paritApam - SuruTTi - Swati Tirunal

(honorable mentions - annapUrNi visAlAkshI - SAmA - Dikshitar; ambA sourambA - ArabhI; annai jAnaki vandALE - SankarAbharaNam - AK).

In my listing, the composition trumps the rendition, in the sense that it is not one particular person's rendition that rocks my boat, so to say! Another way of saying it is that the lyrical and musical beauty of these compositions do it for me.

akshaya linga vibhO so far has been favored by several rasikAs, I think.

There are enough to choose from as it is. I feel thet when it comes to
a e i o u, we do need to make two divisions of each vowel--a A, eE, i I, o O and u U--which only adds up to another three letters in the alphabet (we omit x and z, anyway). If we do not do it now, we are going to find the same problem as we proceed to other letters of the alphabet.

arasi - I dont follow. I did mention that "A" includes a and A (I guess it should include ai and au too :)).

So "e" would include e (e.g. enduku ...) and E (e.g. EkAmbrESa..)
"i" would include i (e.g. inta sowkya) and I (e.g. ISanE inda ...)
"o" would include o (e.g. okapari...) and O (e.g. O rangaSAyI)

Is there something still missing from the picture?

Arun,
Yes, what you say is what I mean with eE iI oO and uU.

With a and A, it is much better if we distinguish between aRumai and ARumO. Imagine how very confusing it already is for thoe who are not familiar with the language!

ai and au: aindu will still have a as the starting letter. Aindu (meaning ArAindu) will start with an A. The same with audArya and so on.. No probems there, i would think.

Well I did say *my* favorite - didn't I? And yes, I have heard Neduniri's version too and I also know he popularized it as well. And I know he is a great musician and like his music too. Now does this mean everyone must like his version the best? My likes and dislikes should not have any bearing on his music - should it?

I think the "A" was a typo for "S", S for swarajathi.
Note that 'a' and 's' are next to each other on the keyboard
