Basava Vachana

Post by vgovindan »

I came across the following beautiful poem. Though I do not know Kannada, I was overwhelmed by the depth of the vachana -

Kannada Script

English Transliteration
enna kAyava daMDigeya mADayya
enna shirava sOreya mADayya
enna naragaLa tantiya mADayya
battIsa rAgava hADayya
uradalotti bArisu kUDalasangama dEva

English Translation
Make my body the fretboard,
Make my head resonator
Make my nerves into the strings
Sing thirtytwo rAgas
Play intensely, Oh koodalasangama dEva*!

Yes, Govindan sir,
An immeasurable treasure and heritage for Kannada lies in Vachanas and Dasara Padas.

These poets were first and foremost mystics and men of realisation. They sang in a simple language to share with everyone the joy of their realization.

Kudalasangama is a holy place where so. many Shiva Sharanas came together!

hi rasikas,

adding some more info to previous posts

even the haridasas followed the convention of the 32 ragas
ಬತ್ತೀಸ ರಾಗ ==> battIsa rAga ==> thirtytwo rAgas

purandaradasaru in his composition (tutturu tUrendu battIsa) lists the 32 ragas as played by lord krishna on his flute.

the explanation of legendary 32 ragas are given here

Very interesting that battisa in kannaDa is the same as बत्तीस (battIs) in Hindi...

Ravi,
Kannada has (since 12th century CE) absorbed many Urdu/Hindi words.

Common ones: meju =table. kurchi=chair. kharchu= expense,
chappali=slippers.....

Ajay-sir, thank you for the link to 32 ragas!

Wellcome Sachi ji.

Kannada has adapted many such Hindi /Urdu words during vijayanagara-bahamani rule period.
Also a part of Karnataka is called mumbai-karnataka as the speak Kannada mixed Hindi slang.

Some different thought about battisa (32) Ragas that I have heard
>It's half the number of the 72 Melas of Carnatic music
>major Ragas or thaats of Hindustani music

also what i heard on the same note is:
people of those times used to use ragas with shuddha madhyama(M1), and avoided too many variations with prathi madhyama usage(M2)
so they had a smaller set of 32 ragas
