Dear Rasikas,

Yes! It is the Golden Jubilee milestone week and indeed a very special
moment for all of us in Raga Surabhi family. We are sure all of you feel
the same joy and happiness as the Raga Surabhi Team members for making it
thus far. Raga Surabhi thanks each one of its rasikas and supporters for
being part of this marvellous journey and for encouraging us with your
feedback, comments and participation in the weekly quiz with passionate
enthusiasm. A BIG and special thanks to each one of you!

The Raga Crossword

*So, what's special for the Golden Jubilee? We are really thrilled to launch
a special quiz commemorating the 50th week of Raga Surabhi, - a Raga
Crossword! It is available at
http://new.ragasurabhi.com/crossword/rscw.html (new
window). Do check it out.

A couple of things we would like to mention about the technology behind Raga
Crossword

The Raga Crossword page is hosted on Google App
Engine<http://code.google.com/appengine/>.
We have hooked it up so that you can submit the crossword answers online via
the page itself and we will be able to look at your answers from the app
engine servers. We have not had a chance to do extensive testing, so please
bear with us if you run into any issues there.

The crossword page is designed to be interactive where you can enter the
answers on the crossword grid. This has been made possible due to an
excellent piece of open source javascript based crossword engine we found on
the Web. The JavaScript Crossword
Engine<http://www.softwaresecretweapons.com/jspwiki/cword> is
authored by Pavel
Simakov<http://www.softwaresecretweapons.com/jspwiki/about> and
available under LGPL software license on the same site
here<http://www.softwaresecretweapons.com/js ... rd-1.0.zip>
.

Raga Crossword Tips:
We have provided short audio clues for the crossword. The clues have been
deliberately kept short because after all the training so far, we are
confident that rasikas should be able to spot the answers in no time. :)

The crossword answers are not only just raga names, they can also be terms
related to carnatic music. Roughly the syllabus for the crossword would be
80% Identifying Ragas Page and 20% Surabhi Post! True to the spirit of
crossword, watch out for googlies!

Since it is a longer quiz than usual, we would like to give our rasikas
sufficient time. The last date for submitting the solved crossword is *25th
Aug 2010*.

Please note that the weekly quiz 50 results would be published next week as
always! So do send in your answers for regular quiz by then.

Week 50 Update:

- New Ragas: Maand, Surutti and Sowrashtram
- Week 50 Quiz, DIY Exercises, Special Crossword Quiz - Goto Raga
Crossword <http://new.ragasurabhi.com/crossword/rscw.html>
- Full Song: We have a special ragamalika full song for this week.
Every line in this song has been composed in a different raga and short
swara sequence provided for each raga at the end. Hope you find it
interesting.

Once again our heartfelt thanks to all our rasikas and looking forward to
your continued support.

Dear Rasikas,

"A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step"

So it is with this little experiment that we started exactly one year ago called Raga Surabhi. Yes, it is a special moment for us, as Raga Surabhi turns one - it is a moment to reflect and look back with happiness, satisfaction and indeed pride. Around the same time last year, Raga Surabhi had a small collection of 10 ragas and today, as we complete one year, we are thrilled to see the count touch the magical figure of 100!

Raga Surabhi stands testimony to the fact that something special, is indeed possible, as we cope with the demands of the daily grind that is life. We cherish all that is part of Raga Surabhi - the Weekly Raga Quiz, Surabhi Post, Identifying Ragas and Raga Comparisons. But, above all that, what we cherish the most about Raga Surabhi is You! - the many rasikas, who have encouraged us all along to fare forward, week after week. To get mails from new visitors who stumble upon our website is really a thrill and that alone acts as a tonic and keep us going! A mail we got recently from a new visitor sums up both the goal and the tiny accomplishment of Raga Surabhi:

"Hello Hats off to you people... one understands the value of internet when we get to see these sites. I get the feeling that even I can learn ragas..."

Now, that we have crossed the 100 raga milestone, we feel it is time to switch gears. We plan to go slow on adding new ragas as the 100 covered so far is sizable and forms a good set for carnatic music appreciation. We hope to continue the other segments as usual, especially the Weekly Raga Quiz. Do continue to participate in the Weekly Quiz contests and keep your feedback coming to us. We really like that. Also, an important task we plan to undertake in lieu of adding new ragas is updating the existing ragas with new audio clips. As some of you may be aware, we recently upgraded our audio recording equipment and the sound quality with the new arrangement is much better. We hope to rerecord all of the old audio content with the new equipment in the course of the next several weeks.

And, last but not the least, we would like to thank Mr. Shafeek from Chennai (colleague of Ramasubramaniam) and Ramu Adapala (colleague of Sriram) from Bangalore, who helped us put up the special visual effects on the website to celebrate the occasion of Raga Surabhi's first anniversary. Hope you like the beautiful stars and balloons as well as the popup window. (Alright, yes, the popup will be removed after some time :)

Week 53 Update:
New Ragas added: Kurinji, Nadanamakriya, Punnagavarali, Shenjurutti, Yamuna Kalyani. The new raga segment for this week features five ragas that are commonly sung in the madhyama shruti.
Surabhi Post 11 - (A must read before listening to new ragas of this week). Talks about the meaning of madhyama shruti and how it differs from the normal panchama shruti
Weekly Quiz 53 and DIY exercises - We have a special question in our weekly quiz apart from the regular three questions. Its quite some time since we introduced the DIY exercises, so we thought it would now be appropriate to move on to akaram exercises along with swaras. Hope rasikas like the idea and find it useful.
Golden Jubilee Raga Crossword Results and discussion on Weekly Quiz page
Full song added: Raga Rathna Malikache

Full song for the week
"Raga Ratna Malikache Ranjillu Nata Shri Hari Sata" in Reeti Gowlai set to Adi tala believed to be Saint Thyagaraja's hundredth composition. In the pallavi, Thyagaraja says "Lord Hari is immensely pleased with my offering of the garland made of hundred melodious ragas".

Is it not an apt number for this week when Raga Surabhi also completes a garland of hundred melodious ragas?

Thank you again rasikas, and you have a great week!

Week 54 update:

Dear rasikas,

After last week's heavy update, we want to keep it light this week. Before we talk about this week's update, we would like to thank all rasikas who have taken time out to write to us on Raga Surabhi's first anniversary. Thank you rasikas!

This week's update features our usual Weekly Quiz and Do It Yourself exercises.

Plus, there is a Surabhi Post blog entry titled "Surabhi Post - 12 Raga Surabhi - The journey so far and future directions"

Thank you again

Have a great week ahead

Dear Rasikas,

Week 55 Update:
Compare Ragas: Lalitha and Vasantha
Week 55 Quiz and Do It Yourself (Swara Sthana exercises)
Full Song added: Ganapathiye unthan kazhal paninden (vinayaka chathurthi special)

This week's full song is a Vinayaka Chathurthi special - Ganapathiye unthan kazhal paninden - in the evergreen raga mohanam set to adi talam, a composition of Thanjavur Shankar Iyer.

Thanjavur Shankar Iyer is one of the well known vageyyakkara (one who composes the verbal as well as the tonal-rhythmic structure of the song) of our times. He was also a successful concert artiste and a teacher par excellence. His compositions are known for rich musical content with extremely simple yet meaningful sahithyam. Some of his other famous compositions which one gets to listen in carnatic concerts are - Rama namam (Desh), Ezhiludai (Hamsanadam), Nata jana palini (Nalinakanthi), Manathirkuhandathu (Sindu Bhairavi) and Ranjani ragamalika.

That's it for this week. Have a great week ahead!

Dear Rasikas,

We are happy to be back with this week's update (Week 57)

We have the regular quiz and swara sthana segment for this week and a full song as well.

One of our new rasikas had requested for Gopalakrishna Bharati songs, so this week's full song segment features the famous Abhogi kriti, 'Sabhapathikku veru deivam samanam aaguma'.

There is an interesting anecdote to this composition. Once Gopalakrishna Bharati was visiting Saint Thyagaraja at Thiruvaiyaru. Thyagaraja was teaching his disciples a kriti in Abhogi and he eagerly asked Gopalakrishna Bharati what composition he has made in the same raga. Bharati stood silent for a few minutes as he had not composed any kriti in Abhogi until then. But not wanting to reply in the negative, he instantaneously composed this kriti and sang it in front of Thyagaraja.

Have a great week

We have the quiz and SS plus a full song for this week.

The full song for the week is a composition of Smt.Mangalam Ganapathy, 'Amba Kripa Sagari' in Kalyani set to Adi tala. The composition is simple yet captures the beauty of kalyani in all its grandeur. Hope you like it.

Dear rasikas,

We are glad to be back with our updates for this week. We are happy that after some lean updates in the last few weeks, we have something new to offer to our rasikas this week. This week's update includes comparison of similar ragas, Madhyamavathi and Sri ragam along with our weekly quiz and DIY exercises. This request has been raised by several of our rasikas and we are happy that finally we are able to take it up this week. As always, we look forward to your feedback and comments on how much you found this episode useful.

Have a great week.

Wonderful site!!! Thanks a lot

And I request the site moderators to add posts like that set of posts on shakaraabharanam and kalyani.
I refer to the posts where the raga lakshanam of these ragas are explained.

Having learnt carnatic music for some time, and now living in a place where nobody has even heard of Carnatic music, Such a service will be greatly helpful

Thanks a lot once again to the site owners

Dear Rasikas,

Wish you all a very happy diwali from all of us at Raga Surabhi! This week we are happy to present the comparison of twin ragas, Ananda Bhairavi and Reethi Gowlai. This comparison is also a long over due and it figured in quite a few rasika request mails. We hope you find it useful and enjoyable. As always, do give your feedback and don't forget to send in your quiz answers for this week.

I am getting your weekly update regularly. When I get in to doubt I consult your site whenever it is available. Initially I had some problem as Nick has pointed out which is now resolved.

For vk- Shri GS Mani and also Kunnakudi Vaithianathan
have elaborately analyzed the various ragas used in film music.Shri GS Mani's analysis was found in Smashits.com
sometime back. The other one is also in the net.
Just to keep you informed in case you have not already come across and is interested.

Dear Rasikas,

We are happy to be back with this week's update. We have been receiving good support for our Surabhi Post columns. After a brief hiatus, Uma continues her discussion on ragas in this week's column.

It is also surprising that some of our rasikas write to us asking us to render the quiz snippets as full songs. We have accommodated one such request, which also turns out to be a Mangalam Ganapathy Composition - Pon Iyyan Ayyappan in Mukhari.

In order to facilitate our rasikas across the globe, we would like to say that the deadline for quiz is Saturday, 10.00 A.M. (Indian Standard Time), every week. This was a suggestion from one of our US based rasika.

As usual please send in your quiz answers to quiz@ragasurabhi.com only, this would help us in consolidating the winners faster.

Have a great week ahead!

Dear Rasikas,

With December around the corner, we are sure that all rasikas would be eagerly looking forward to the music season, as much as we are. This week we have our quiz and DIY exercises for you.

It was little surprising to note that some of our rasikas had missed question #1 in our week 65 quiz, we would like you to listen to the snippet and signature again and try it out. We had lot of responses this week and it was very encouraging to note that most of them came in pretty quickly.

Keep sending in those emails and answers. Do spread the word about Raga Surabhi when you meet your friends and relatives during the music season!

Have a great week ahead!

Week 67 Updates:

Dear Rasikas,

We guess some of you would have charted your plans to attend various concerts lined up for the day unless rain plays spoil sport, as it has been since morning today at Chennai!

Hope you enjoyed our last week's quiz, some of our rasikas were wondering why the second clue wasn't Kalyani :), it was a deliberate googly. Most of our rasikas got it right, we are happy to note that. We also realize there is an urgent need to compare Mandhari and Amrithavarshini since some of our rasikas have got them mixed up!

This week we have a comparison segment based on the quiz responses of the earlier weeks, primarily comparing Bahudhari, Nagaswaraali and Gambeera Naatai. In fact one of our rasikas had requested to include Gambeera Naatai as well, that is why you see a triple raga comparison this week.

We will share details about Uma's concerts during this music season in the next weekly update. In the meanwhile, do listen to our weekly updates and keep sending in your quiz answers as usual.

Have a great week ahead!

Week 68 Updates:

Dear Rasikas,

Hope you have all got started with Music Season 2010! We eagerly look forward to hearing from our rasikas more during this period because this is when they can put their raga identification skills to maximum use and see if Raga Surabhi has indeed helped them in fine tuning their skills. In the wake of music season, we would like to appeal to all our rasikas to write to us what ever clarifications they need and we assure you that the reply would be sent as quickly as possible.

This week we have the weekly quiz, DIY exercises and a full song requested by one of our rasikas. A portion of this song featured in our quiz section a few weeks ago and a rasika found it so interesting that she requested us to take it up as early as possible in the full song segment. 'Neeye Thunai' set in Simhendra Madhyamam and Adi tala also happens to be a Mangalam Ganapathy composition. A simple song which sums the valour and humility of Lord Anjaneya, we hope you will enjoy it!

For details about Uma's concerts during the season, please do visit our site, www.ragasurabhi.com. Please do attend if you find it convenient.

Week 69 Updates:

Dear Rasikas,

We are happy to be back with our updates. We are keeping it very simple this week, just the weekly quiz and DIY exercises since there is lot of music happening in chennai! While compiling week 68 quiz winners, we were thrilled to note that all our rasikas have got all the three answers right! Congratulations!

We have also been attending concerts, mainly at the Music Academy and we are happy to note that in all these concerts so far, the ragas sung by the musicians are from Raga Surabhi syllabus :) So, first time carnatic rasikas who have been with Raga Surabhi all this time should have no difficulty in raga identification when they attend concerts.

We would like to run a special segment during the music season, for featuring concert reviews and experiences. We appeal to all our rasikas to share their concert experiences with us which can in turn be posted under this segment. The entries received till Friday would be posted along with the weekly updates for that week.

For those of you who are in chennai, happy sabha hopping! And do remember to reply to our raga quiz this week.

Have a great week.

Week 71 Updates:

Dear Rasikas,

Raga Surabhi wishes you all a very HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2011!

The music season 2010 has almost come to an end. Hope all our rasikas had taken time out to attend atleast a few concerts during this period.

We listened to some very good concerts in the Music Academy. Also, we were thrilled to meet a few friends of Raga Surabhi, Ms.Sundari Subramaniam and Mr. Keshav Raj, in person, at the Academy. We also made a few new friends while trying to spread the word about Raga Surabhi. Overall, we had a great time in this Music Season.

A word about the last week's quiz. The answer to questions 1 and 3, both are kambodhi but most of them have missed reading it. Congrats to Ms.Sumathi Suresh for getting the googly right.

This week, apart from the quiz and DIY exercises, we discuss the comparison between ragas Mandhari, Pantuvarali and Amrithavarshini. Hope you find it useful and enjoyable.

We share the concert reviews sent to us by two of our new rasikas, Mr.Gopal Srinivasan and Ms.Sumathi Suresh. We thank them for taking time out to write to us. Hope you will enjoy reading them in the blog.

Have a great week and a great year!

Week 72 Updates:

Dear Rasikas,

Hope you have all got back to your regular routine after Music Season, Christmas vacation and New year celebrations!

This week we have a Surabhi Post column on the Lec Dems attended by Uma and the raga quiz and DIY exercises for you. Do not forget to send in your answers.

Last week's quiz was an inspiration from one of Shri. T N Seshagopalan's concerts :). Rasikas would have probably seen the connection between the three ragas, Nilambari (raga for inducing sleep), Bowli (raga for waking up, sung in the dawn) and kaapi (synonymous with the morning cup of coffee).

We will come up with some more pending raga comparisons in the coming weeks, do stay connected.

Have a great week!

Dear Rasikas,

Yet another week and time for update. This week Uma shares her experience of Shri Nedanuri Krishnamurthy's Lec dem in Surabhi Post. As usual we have our weekly quiz and DIY exercises.

A word about last week's quiz, surprisingly some of our rasikas have had difficulty in identifying Chala Nattai and some have got mixed up with Bhairavi and Mukhari. You might want to listen to the comparison episode once again :)

Keep sending in your quiz answers. Wishing you a great week ahead.

Very interesting. I fervently wish something like this exists for Rhythm as well, in understanding talas and layam. The articles i find on Talas just elaborate on the maths part of it; audio/visual aids are sorely needed here.

We have a special quiz and a special song for this platinum week update.

The special quiz is different from the usual ones - there are no audio files. This is a theory quiz on Carnatic music. The answers can be anything related to Carnatic music - raga names, musicians, ... well, take the quiz to find out! You are free to use Google, Yahoo! or any other favorite search engine of yours to help you out! Do watch out for googlies :) Good Luck and hope you have fun with the quiz!

The full song for this week is a compilation of the most common daily chant slokas. We have chosen one sloka each on the following Gods -Vinayaka, Muruga, Shiva, Devi, Rama and Hanuman and tuned them in familiar ragas. We hope you will enjoy listening to them. We will be happy if students learning carnatic music pick up the tune and sing them in their homes or in small functions.

We have not introduced new ragas for the past several weeks so that rasikas can assimilate the ragas covered so far. We now plan to take up new ragas slowly. Also, a note about raga comparisons - we would like to take up raga comparisons only after individual ragas is covered separately. For example, there have been several requests for Poorna Chandrika and Janaranjani; we will take this up once we cover Poorna Chandrika.

Just a couple of things about the special quiz:
The deadline for the special quiz is 11-Feb-2011 (Friday midnight). Please submit your answers to quiz@ragasurabhi.com. Mention the subject as "week 75 special quiz". Please submit the answers in the following format:
(1) ANSWER1
(2) ANSWER2
...
As always do remember to send in your answers for week 75 regular quiz by 5-Feb-2011.

Thanks again and have a great week ahead!

Week 79 update:
Dear Rasikas,

We are happy to be back with our update for this week. After completion of 100 ragas, we took a hiatus on adding new ragas to enable rasikas familiarize these ragas before proceeding to new ragas and at the same time chose to focus on the comparison of twin ragas. We are sure our rasikas would be happy to know that our journey on learning new ragas begins its second phase this week with the addition of a new raga, Madhuvanti, in our Identifying Ragas section. We hope you will enjoy listening to it.

In the full song segment, we have the most famous 'Dhenuka' kriti, 'Theliyaleru Rama Bhakthi Margamunu', a composition of Thyagaraja Swamy, where the composer wonders about how much people are ignorant about the path of true devotion.

As usual, we look forward to your quiz answers, feedback and comments. Do keep them coming....

Have a great week!

Raga Surabhi Team: Congratulations on the milestone. You all are doing excellent work. I especially like the way you do the comparison episodes. Crisp and clear, and to the point. Pantuvarali-Purvikalyani is an excellent example how well done are these comparison episodes. Thanks.

Week 128 and 129 Updates-

Dear Rasikas,

We are sure you are eagerly awaiting the results of our 'Week 125 - Special Quiz'. The results are available here - Week 125 Special Quiz - Results.
Congratulations and thanks to all the winners and participants of the special quiz!!

Before proceeding with our regular update, we would like to make an announcement -

For quite some time now, we have steadily been getting enquires regarding online music lessons. Due to lack of time for this, Uma has not been able to take this up previously. However, we are glad to announce that Uma is able to accept a limited number of students now and those who are interested may get in touch with Uma. Please email Raga Surabhi, with a subject "online music lessions". There is really no prerequisite for this, except a strong interest in carnatic music and a serious desire to devote time for this :)

In the weekly update, we have the next episode of Laya Lahiri, Tarang - 7 in which Suri demonstrates the various aspects of 'Thisra Nadai'. We hope you find his explanations and mridangam demonstrations enjoyable!

We have also taken up one of the most tricky pair of twin ragas - Poornachandrika and Janaranjani in our comparison episode. This comparison has figured in many of our rasika requests too, so we hope rasikas will take time to listen to it. And your feedback on whether you found it useful would be always appreciated :)

Keep the quiz answers coming......

Have a great week!
