#1 Karnatik.com

Ah, first up, a big thanks to the mods for taking up the request to have this section up. Today, it is the internet that is CM's biggest and for many the most easily accessible resource. You get virtually everything you want -- recordings, books, lessons, rare and unheard stuff, music journals, research, articles, reviews, song lists -- you name it, you got it. This section will help to point out all those places, one by one and everyone's contribution is most eagerly awaited.

I basically owe nearly all my development to the internet sites that do their part to spread CM by their means (good or otherwise ;) )

So I'll start off with a site with whom I've had a long history -- http://karnatik.com/ -- I prefer starting here : http://karnatik.com/infoindex.shtml

How did I find it? -- I ran into this long long ago in the last decade when searching for lyrics for some of the songs I was listening to and it's still one of those old runners that's still around.

What does it have? (It's not meant to summarize everything, maybe subsequent threads can). It's divided into these sections -- lyrics, references, fun stuff, a learning music section and a theory section. Among other things, these include :

1) A good introduction section with some helpful notes on the history of CM
2) Some good articles here : http://karnatik.com/articles.shtml
3) A good basics section : http://karnatik.com/beginner.shtml - covers the usual gamut - sarali, janta, dhattu, upper and lower octave verses, alankarams, geetams, nottuswarams, and finally the varnams -- the last 3 will take you to the pages where there are extensive lists of the items with lyrics for the same

Has useful guides where you can read the notation and how the verses are sung in 4 speeds and also listen to the basics too. There're some useful tips on how to practice too, identifying close ragas, a list of gamakas and other useful stuff.

4) By far the biggest contribution from this site is that it has an extensive song list (about 2400 compositions) of most well known compositions covering a huge range of composers and ragas. The list links to pages for the lyrics of nearly all the items on this list (and this is the site's greatest asset) -- occasionally you can get a translation too. For songs not on the list, you can mail (though I've realized since then it is Mr. Lakshman who provides the lyrics).

http://karnatik.com/lyricstext.shtml

You can also go to the composers pages and read some interesting info on their lives. You get lists of compositions sorted by composer and by raga too (which takes you to an EXTENSIVE A-Z listing of nearly 1000 ragas) -- all the links on these pages lead to the lyrics of the song.

Other interesting stuff - a huge list of film songs and the nearest equivalent carnatic ragas they were composed in, fun quizzes, a table of talas, Hindustani equivalent's to CM ragas, etc.. etc..., a melakartha list, even a jokes page...

I mainly used it for lyrics and that huge song list and (in the beginning) for some of the interesting references and fun stuff it had.

How to best use it : Online surfing. Or Google <a song name> lyrics. Chances are this will be on the first page. Or better, download the whole website  (http://www.httrack.com/)

I will visit many sites and review them here, each in it's own separate topic -- not just me, anyone can contribute. Rasikas maintaining their blogs of CM related stuff can also open a topic for their website and we can describe what is on it.

How to best use karnatik.com : Online surfing. Or Google <a song name> lyrics. Chances are this will be on the first page. Or better, download the whole website  (http://www.httrack.com/) -- (Actually I did, about 8 years ago).

@kvchellappa Sir, many of these websites which will feature in this section are well known to all of us actually and in some cases it may be highlighting the obvious (sangethapriya). Google generally takes you to one of them in the 1st few pages itself. Somehow these ideas sprout up from somewhere -- usually a need, or a question, "If I was an opportunist, and I wanted to contribute something back to this music, what can I do?). But this idea has been long in the incubation -- I have been visiting sites and downloading whatever I can get to expand my music collections and that song list of mine (I promise to release v.0.0.1  once it has grown a little more) and I've been at it for years now.

In the process, I've found a lot of places and of late I'm also seeing a growing presence of CM on social media too.

So it was that one day I observed all the bookmarks in my web browsers and wondered as to why not have all this in one place where music lovers can view it, with some helpful tips on what to expect and how to use these websites. We have done this before on rasikas.org earlier, but so far these have been a little scattered. Now it's time to bring them into their own place.

A few little things a day, given enough time, turn so huge that one day you look back with astonishment at how big one idea could have grown so big. Slow, but steady I guess wins :)

There's only one principle : For the time being, I am putting each website in a separate topic (so that I can review it ) and it makes for easier visibility. But maybe I can also do a group topic (maybe those can be sticky) and post links in bulk en-masse there... ok, getting ahead of myself. But of course I won't mind (in fact I would be very grateful) if you post related links (such as the ones given by Lakshmanan sir above) in a thread either. :ugeek:

SrinathK, My comment was in the overall context of your various posts. You have taken your love of CM like you must have done with your IIT discipline.
It is a pleasure to read your posts except when it gets technical because I am out of depth there.

Whoa, everyone, you should be thanking Lakshman sir for that list :). I copy pasted his post when he gave a link to it. See for yourself : viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1090&start=50

I have read an article of him in the Hindu and I have wondered - "Man I took so long to hear and LIST 1000 songs, how did he get to 38000 LYRICS?" Please thank the man for his efforts!

Meanwhile, I'm flooded with ideas now that the first one has finally clicked (it seems that the first idea is always the hardest). Hmm, maybe we can definitely have sticky threads for group topics where links will pour in en masse like this - a sticky topic for lyrics pages (whether that should belong here or in the sahitya section is something I haven't yet figured), a sticky topic for youtube channels, a sticky topic for CM on Facebook. I'll review a particular site in an individual thread. Yeah, that should be a good way to organize this section.

Thank you everyone though for your best wishes and encouragement! I'm deeply touched. :D

Srinath,
Awesome!
I echo Chellappa's words--and I don't know the technical stuff at all (he knows much more).

I sent you mail two days ago (also to another forumite whose mail address wasn't handy). I now know that it wasn't received. The same in your case too? If so, please try to send mail through Rasikas, and let's see if it reaches me :)

Oh, our lyrics HanumAn is Lakshman. Though he grew up in tamizh nADu, his name didn't take on the additional 'an' :)

btw, I think Srinath is going to do this, but just to be sure, separate out non karnatik.com links into their own topics. I currently see at least two new threads. One for Sri. Govindan's links ( post # 14) and the other for the various links that Lakshman provided (post # 3 )

One day all these links will have their own topic, but as such I don't mind if anyone replies in any thread -- any contribution is most welcome. Actually lyrics websites should be made into a sticky thread of it's own since there are so many of them, we can review them in their own topic later.

vgovindan and other rasikas also have their lyric pages on Sangeethapriya too.

Sorry about that sir. Funny, how come we have all appeared to have noticed this only now after it was re-posted again in a fresh thread. These lyrics resources have been up there the whole time -- google, this is all your fault. I haven't actually visited the sahitya section till now (yes! :o ), but hey, I googled first and usually got anything I asked for.

Since that section is mainly used for requesting song lyrics, I'll review those sites here.
