Very sad to hear. I have known him through a couple of different connections over the years and there are a few disciples of him among our members here. Condolences to the family and his world wide network of friends and disciples.

Quoting myself from a facebook post:

"...Gentle, wise, self effacing giant. The innovator of an original, superb gaayaki style of flute playing that combined the best elements of Swaminatha Pillai, Mali as well as nagasvara vidvans. Best of all, he passed that great knowledge with profound love and care to Jayanth. I will cherish my notebook with his handwritten notations for several varnams and kritis. Sankaran sir, there can never be another like you. Will miss you sorely..."

Here's a classic Sankaran sir Kamboji, the best:

A truly great man, apart from his great music he was a socially and politically enlightened man. Sankaran sir was the late Mali sir's most trusted friend and after the latter's untimely passing in 1986, remained the sole executor of his estate, making sure that all assets passed to Mali sir's only male sibling, T R Sivaraman.

If there's a consolation it is that his great music and original playing techniques are being carried forward commendably by the immensely gifted Jayanth, his grandson. Here's quoting myself again, on Jayanth (which has something on Sankaran sir too):
