We pray God for Dr Sri Ramani" S Soul to RIP.
This is a great loss for all music lovers.
His association with my beloved father MSG Guruji was phenomenal. Dr.Ramani was the summumbonum of simplicity and unparalleled in total control over the Melodic mastery and presentation over the Flute, his favorite instrument.
All musicians found lots of amazing treasures in each of his concerts.
Dr. Sri Ramani created his Hallmark regal stamp in each of his unforgettable Eternal renditions.
Long live his Eternal Music.

This is such sad news.

My car was blessed with his presence on two or three occasions, giving him a lift to his home. He was not used to seat belts, but never minded my insistence that he should use it. I knew him personally just for those short trips.

Condolences and sympathy to his wife, family, students and admirers. I'm sure he was unique in every way.

What sad news!

Not only a distinguished vidvAn but a gentleman. Someone who radiated dignity, had no airs, and seemed to be liked by all.

As quiet and contained as he seemed, he has many admirers everywhere--of his art and of his personality.

The Cleveland festival wouldn't be the same. Sad news indeed, though it was known that he was ailing for a while. Condolences to the family, students and friends.

His son and grandson and students will carry on the tradition...

Sri Ramani invariably brings to my mind an exquisite Bindumalini! He had once kept this scale as ring 'tune' of his handset.

N. Ramani passes away
By Samudri

Flute maestro N. Ramani died of cardiac arrest in the afternoon of 9th October 2015 in Chennai. He was 81. He was a disciple of his maternal grandfather Azhiyur Narayanaswami and the renowned Flute Mali. He played extensively in India and abroad, presenting solos, 'second flute' with his Guru T.R. Mahalingam, jugalbandis with several Hindustani musicians (a record number with maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia) and was a member of the popular violin-venu-veena (vvv) troupe with violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman and vainika R. Venkataraman.

The vidwan was a popular teacher and established the Ramani's Academy of Flute in Chennai in 1983, where he taught hundreds of students. The RAF has several branches abroad.

The leading Carnatic flutist was the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Sangeeta Choodamani (1971), the Kalaimamani award (1973), Venugana Chakravarty (1978), the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1984), Padma Shri (1987), Sangita Kalanidhi (1997), and Isai Perarignar (1999).

He was a deeply religious and contented person. Pilgrimage to Sabarimala was an act of faith. He was the asthana vidwan of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam and several mutts and temples. For a long time he was associated with the organisation of the Tyagaraja aradhana in Tiruvaiyaru, and would be present on the Pushya Bahula Panchami day to lead the rendition of Chetulara before the Pancharatana kritis.

The breath that he blew through the bamboo, charming his rasikas, has been stilled forever. N. Ramani's passing away is a loss to the field of Carnatic music. Sruti offers its condolences to the bereaved family.

Very sad to hear the news. In spite of the health issues, he was still attending public functions. There are quite a few members of this forum who are his disciples. Condolences to his family, disciples and friends.

Such a gentle humble human being. I remember how kind he was when my daughter who was 7 years old then struggled to blow through the flute. I will always remember his humility apart from his music and how well he carried himself among us ..the ordinary folks. Such beautiful music that gave countless hours of joy !

Very sorry to hear about Dr.Ramani's demise. He was a great vidwan. I went to the concert of Dr.Ramani on the flute and Lalgudi Jayaraman on the violin, in the 60s. About 10+ years ago I went to Dr.Ramani's flute concert in Miami. Before the concert I went to him and asked him if he could play any song in Raga Bageshri. I told him I have come here to listen to him from 130 miles away. He did sing the raga Bageshri. Somebody asked him to sing some song before this and he said, I'm sorry, but I have someone who has come from far away and wants to hear Bageshri and I am going to sing the ragam. He did not have to please some fan he did not know. He tried to make his fans happy. I am sorry to hear about his passing away. Condolences to his family and students. May his soul Rest in Peace.

Condolences to his family, generations of disciples, and fans! May his soul RIP - maybe he's playing a duet with his guru and uncle now, to delight celestial audiences!
