Ravikiran's book, "Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi - Life and Contributions" puts forth some original inferences and conclusions that challenge several hitherto accepted realities and offers alternate viewpoints to others, strictly based on musical and intellectual logic.
With over 230 lyrical illustrations and/or references, it explores numerous hitherto unknown facets of this divine composer and analyses his musical style, lyrical brilliance and poetic imagination. The study not only gives fresh perspectives on the composer but also explodes many accepted opinions about the evolution of Carnatic music around the turn of the 17th century.
Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi (1700-65) was a composer of the highest calibre, whose contributions span across several spheres. Even though his compositions have been popularised by great musicians like Musiri Subramania Iyer, GNB, Madurai Mani Iyer, D K Jayaraman, Madurai T N Seshagopalan, Bombay Sister and several other current day performers, the extent of his contributions have never been fully analysed and documented yet. The general perception is that he composed almost exclusively on Lord Krishna and his compositions are full of fast paced (madhyama kala) passages. Nothing can be further than the truth.
This book has exclusive sections on Venkata Kavi’s contributions to melody, rhythm, literature, poetry, opera, dance, culture, history and spiritualism. It also brings to fore the composer's stunning imagination and poetic skills and his exemplary humble, cheerful and positive attitude.
Most of all, it shows that with his extraordinary command of melody and rhythm there is no doubt that he was one of the country's most brilliant and prolific vaggeyakaras.
Talking about this book in his Foreword, Ravikiran explains that
¨ He has himself learnt over 100 compositions of Venkata Kavi
¨ He has studied the lyrics of another 300 or more
¨ He has undertaken visits to Oottukkadu, Mannargudi, Needamangalam and Tanjore Saraswati Mahal Library
¨ He has conducted numerous concerts, lectures and music camps on Venkata Kavi's works.
¨ He has conducted live or phone interviews with family members and disciples of Needamangalam Krishnamurthy Bhagavatar including Mrs Rajammal (wife), Ms Alamelu, Mr Subbaraman (disciples) and others.
¨ He has also had discussions with various front ranking musicians, gurus, musicologists, dancers and scholars of Sanskrit and culture, covering several generations.
