വാസുദേവന്‍റെ സമകാലികനായ കെ. ജെ. യേശുദാസിന്‍റെ ജനപ്രിയ സംഗീതക്കച്ചേരികളും ആദര്‍ശശുദ്ധിയുള്ള ശ്രോതാക്കളെ സംതൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതല്ല. ശാസ്ത്രീയസംഗിതത്തിന്‍റെ ഗൌരവം നിലനിര്‍ത്താന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ഇത്തരം കച്ചേരികള്‍ പിന്‍തലമുറയുടെ സിദ്ധികളെ വികസ്വരമാക്കാന്‍ സഹായിക്കുന്നതുമല്ല. ഈ നിരീക്ഷണത്തിന്‍റെ പിന്‍ബലത്തിനുവേണ്ടി മാവേലിക്കര പ്രഭാകരവര്‍മ്മയുടെ വാക്കുകള്‍ ഉദ്ധരിക്കുന്നു: "പറഞ്ഞുകേള്‍ക്കുന്നതുപോലെ യേശുദാസ് ചെന്ബൈയുടെ ശിഷ്യനല്ല, അവര്‍ ഒരുമിച്ചു പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, അത് സ്വാമിയുടെ മഹാമനസ്കത. അക്കാദമിയില്‍ പഠിച്ചതുകൊണ്ട് ശെമ്മങ്കുടി, കുമാരസ്വാമി, വെച്ചൂര്‍ എന്നിവരുടെ കുറെ ശ്രദ്ധ ദാസിനു കിട്ടി. അവരില്‍നിന്നു പഠിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ഇപ്പോഴും കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്നു. അതിന്‍റെകുടെ സ്വന്തമായിട്ടുള്ളതു വല്ലതും ചേര്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഇത്രകാലമായിട്ടും ദാസ് ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ശബ്ദം കൊള്ളാം, എന്നുകരുതി അതുമാത്രമല്ലല്ലോ സംഗീതം." അന്‍പതു വര്‍ഷത്തെ കേരളസംഗിതത്തെ വിലയിരുത്തുന്പോള്‍ യേശുദാസിനെ എവിടെ നിര്‍ത്തണമെന്ന സൂചന ഈ വാക്കുകളില്‍ പ്രകടമാണ്.

The popular concerts of KJ Yesudas, who is a contemporary of Vasudevan, don't satisfy serious rasikas. These concerts which cannot maintain the depth of carnatic music do not help to bring out the greatness of the great masters of yesterday. The words of Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma are relevant in this context: "Unlike what is popular belief, Yesudas is not a disciple of Chembai. They have sung together, that is Swami's (Chembai's) greatness. Because he studied at the Academy, Das got some attention from the likes of Semmangudi, Kumaraswami and Vechur. Whatever he learnt from them he still carries with him. However, after all these years, he hasn't attempted to add anything of substance to what he imbibed from them. He has a good voice; however music is not just that." When we assess fifty years of classical music of Kerala, these words will help us to place Yesudas at the appropriate level.
