3 Week Intense Workshop In Hindustani music By Sri. Arijit Mahalanabis

This introductory course on Hindustani music with an emphasis on Dhrupad and Dhamar is designed to provide beginners with fundamental training in Hindustani music leading to a deeper understanding of the philosophy, epistemology, theory and practice of Dhrupad, the oldest extant genre of Hindustani music. Dhrupad shares a genetic ancestry with Carnatic music, and therefore students of South Indian performing arts should find this course useful in
broadening their artistic and aesthetic horizons.

*Optional training. This training is designed to strengthen the voice and teach the musician to gain full control of his/her voice.This course is open to anyone who has an interest in understanding Hindustani music.Students with a basic understanding of classical music (Carnatic, Western or Hindustani) will likely gain the most from the content of the course.
Duration 3 weeks November 7 th to 26 th 2016 (Mondays to Fridays only)
Workshop fee : Rs 2000 per student payable in cash or by cheque favouring "Brahaddhvani"

PRESENTS

This course which will meet daily, from 7 th to 26 th November, each day for a period of five hours,has four major components: voice training, music theory, practical vocal training, listening and analysis. The practical elements of the course will focus on developing understanding of Dhrupad performance technique with regard to Raga Bilawal. At the end of the course, the class will collectively present a short informal performance. A typical schedule of events is as follows:

06:00 – 8:00 am: Voice Training (Kharaj and Murchhana Training)*
10:00 am – 11:00 am: Voice Training (Alankar and Palta Training)
11:30 am – 1:00 pm: Practical Training in Alap and Dhrupad

Techniques

2:30 pm – 4:00 pm : History, Epistemology and Theory of music
5:00 pm – 6:00 pm : Listening and Analysis
