kApi nArAyaNi is a lovely ragam, but I only seem to have heard a singular composition in this ragam--sarasa sAmadAna. Are there other compositions in kApi nArAyaNi? Although I think MMI's renditions of this composition are the gold standard--especially his imaginative neravals at hitavu mATa--here's a nice rendition by GNB in the company of TNK and PR: http://www.sendspace.com/file/fene6q

Well, bilahari.
I remember Lakshman sir giving a complete list of songs in kApi nArAyani in some thread. I couldn't find it. There are definitely more songs.
And I've never heard the rAga 'nArAyani'. Can you please tell me where to find a recording/composition? =)

Lakshman, I saw those but figured Narayani is a different raga.

It is a different raga. I posted the links since srinivasrgvn had never heard of the raga and wanted to know if audio clips were available.

Lakshmanji, thank you very much, as always! VK, thank you as well for that link. I'm downloading it now.
Srikant, this concert of GNB TNK PR is rather extraordinary, with an elaborate tODi pallavi running in excess of an hour with GNB and TNK exhausting the raga in a multi-stage alapanai. The concert also features an excellent mA jAnaki.

1) Tillai chidambarame sung by Sanjay, is tuned in Kapi Narayani by Trichy J.Venkatraman, an Alathur disciple, as per Sanjay's note. Marimutta Pillai appears to be pre-trinity, which gels with my impression of Kapi narayani being a Tyagaraja creation.

2) This Mahisasura mardhini in Narayani sounds nothing like Ramanive and Bhajanaseya of Tyagaraja. More like Goulai than anything remotely like Narayani. Haven't explored possible deep srutibhedam possibilities here, though!

It is very very likely that tyAgarAja was the first to use it..

there is a krti attributed to mutthuswami dikshitar, which goes mahiSAsuramardini mAm pAhi madhyadEsavasini.. this is in gaula, and even has the rAgamudra?..

the other krti, found in the SSP, is mahiSAsuramardinIm namami mahanIya kapardinIm, which is in narayaNi, and also doesn't sound like the narAyaNI of tyagaraja's songs.. has phrases reminescent of Bilahari..

You should be able to see quite a few recordings in sangeethapriya...
Listen to this TKR piece...(not so great recording)...
http://sangeethamshare.org/hariharan/TK ... rayani.mp3
in this rendition after MC's violin reply (he gives extra time for him :-) ) TKR appreciates young MC !!!
(I think he says such talented young people should come...)

Here is my attempt:

catuhshruti riSabha antara gAndhAra catuhshruti dhaivata svara kaishiki niSADa itara shuddha ArOha
ga varjita avarOha sampUrNa sagrahanyAsAmsha

through this lakshaNa gIta, Sri Govindacharya provides the various svarasthAna for this rAga in the ArOhaNa and avarOhaNa (as a deriative of the harikAmbhOji mELa)...and in this context, I think, sagrahanyAsAmSa (सग्रहन्यासाम्श) should be split as = sa (स) + (graha) ग्रह + (nyAsa) न्यास + (aMSa) अम्श. sa = with; graha has many meanings but in musical terms, it is the first (svara); nyAsa, musically is the last (svara); aMSa (in this context) I think means the jIva (svara).

I think the meaning will be the same for the other lakshaNa gItas as well.
