I have an affection for Sri. S. Ramanathan's "Arukkutthan Theriyum". Sowmya represents that bhavam here, though a tad faster than S. Ramanathan's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnDRAmZlkGw

I also like the Devamanohari portion of the masterpiece ragamalika varnam "sAmiyai azhaithOdi vA endan" by Sri Dandayudapani Pillai. (bUmi pugazhum dEva manOhari magizhum). This varnam was discussed in this thread: http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7896

Devamanohari was adequately explored by GNB and his disciples. GNB had sung an elaborate Pallavi in Devamonahri. MLV has sung many songs in Devamanohari wilh elaborate alapanas nerval and swaras and she also has sung RTP in Devamonohari.Neekelana was a favouraite of KVN.

There are a couple of varNams in this rAga - palumAru of Patnam.S.ayyar is probably available as a commercial release by Smt. R. Vedavalli.

kannataNDri nApai of tyAgarAja was popular among old timers, now is a rare bird. Evarikai avatAram and kulabirudunu rule the small roost that is afforded to tyAgarAja's devamanOhari.

It is heartening to see the jewel 'bhArati maddhiSaNA-jAdyApahE' coming into circulation.

MahadEvamanohari in tisra gati Adi, is a classy piece, like all of Tanjore Ponniah's songs.

While nIkEla nAyeDa at breakneck speed was and is going strong, the other gem of pUci, 'samayamidE' suffers neglect, as does his varNam in the same rAga.

The composition 'palukavademi rA' of vAsudEvacArya is very popular, sung by MMI and many other artistes to date.. Sometimes with near-tiresome sangati-s in the chittaswaram.

tanjAvUr.S.kalyAnarAman used to sing Mutthiah bhAgavatar's ninu nera namminAnurA.

I have heard a pallavi in this raga, but it gets repetitive and tiresome with too many mr-mr and ndn-pndn phrases grating on the neurons.

I remember S.P.Ramh singing a wonderful RTP in Devamanohari many years back in a special RTP series in Narada Gana Sabha. Wonder if some of the current stars sing this ragam elaborately. Innamum tamadamen of Vedanayakam Pillai used to be sung by GNB in those days. I wonder if anyone sings this these days. There is also a lovely ganapati song by Papanasam Sivan that I heard Ashok Ramani sing many years back. Can't remember the words though. I think Sivan has also composed a varnam in Devamanohari.

Thyagaraja has handled this beautifully. Two krithis come to my mind:

Evarikai Avadharame--a leisurely-paced rendering, the other kriti--a fast-paced one--KannaThandri Na Pai (Keerthi:Question--Who composed the Chittaswaram. The two krithis in my opinion are adequate to attempt a brief Raga sketch--I am not a fan of making this into an RTP--the repetitions are unavoidable

Poochi Iyengar's Nee Kelana is a fast-paced one.

GNB has handled this beautifully in the Ragamalika--Sonnadai Seychida Sahasama(Kanni Madam Thannil)

Are there any kritis in this Raga by MD or SYama sastry?

Tyagaraja's kulabirudunu is a classic. It was DKJ's favourite.
Sivan has composed a kriti Shri ganapathiye in this ragam.
Poochi's samayamide is another excellent kriti.

I have heard a lovely varnam also - can't remember the details now.

Not aware of MD or SS kritis in this ragam.

The TMT piece in Devamanohari is ordinary in my opinion.

There is another piece Palukava De Mira--I am not sure who is the composer.

Any hints from Vidyarthis in the forum.

Yes, Palukavademira is a lovely kriti.
Here's a soulful rendition by the Madras quartet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V4Dn8BJBvY

Yes, quite soulful indeed. Very nicely arranged and played.

BTW, one of the comments in the above youtube video refers to this song which is the theme song to the game Arcanum

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftvpi-6Z6qw

I can see why that person thought there is some similarity, though no match to Palukavademira by MSQ.

dEvamanOhari is a long runner since the 17th century that has been explored more than most of us would expect. From OVK to the Thyagaraja & Dikshitar, to HMB to GKB to GNB, Papanasam Sivan and Tulaseevanam, a lot of composers have covered this rAgA.

Mostly a scalar rAgA, dEvamanOhari has a distinct and easily recognizable identity that can't be missed once you are familiar with it. The scale of the raga goes like this :

Aro : S R2 M1 P D2 N2 S
Avarohanam : S N2 D2 N2 P M1 R2 S

The absence of G and the vakra phrase NDNP holds the key to the identity of this raga.

The structure of this rAgA seems to have stayed largely intact over the centuries, although in the past P (D)NNS was used in the ascent. Old dEvamanOhari did not use the PDNS phrase, but only PNNS. This is mentioned as far as the SSP, and which, probably because of the way the gamaka is applied on it, seems to have been reinterpreted into PDNS post trinity - use of the gamakas can sometimes allow room for swaras to appear like this, which can later stand on their own ground.

A PNDNS also seems to have been used at one point (this brings a kind of vakra symmetry to the D2 on both arOhanam and avarOhanam). The SNDNP that is so key to this rAgA on the descent has been there right from the beginning. Overall, the rAgA has changed at only one significant place throughout its history, which can't be said of many others.

A lot, and I mean, a LOT has been written about this rAgA here : http://guruguha.org/wp/?p=2122 - and most of what I said comes from this. The article also talks about the nature of older ragas, how they weren't so scale bound and allowed for multiple options in both ascending and descending phrases, until more modern musicology froze their lakshanas.

I am for a change, starting my musical exploration from a different place, an absolute heavyweight - an RTP in dEvamanOhari, by GNB - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUABCwBppP0

Before coming back to a kriti of Thyagaraja - evarikai - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlXRiFYbsyE - by MLV

Dikshitar has composed a couple of kritis in this rAgA, so here's one - bhAratI maddhiSaNAjADyApahE - by the Dikshitar expert of the modern day, G Ravikiran -
https://youtu.be/U_1847G9N_U?t=455 - Part 1 and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8yhUKQwscM - Part 2

There are also other kritis of Thyagaraja - kanna tanDri nApai is a popular one, and this is my pick of the day : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSNx0XHHl3o - LGJ

A vocal version for those interested : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK3Z2Hgsn7I

There's more to come from dEvamanOhari. I'm not done yet.

Tyagaraja has composed a kriti -Varadaraja- in Swarabhushani which is very similar to Devamanohari. I haven't heard it in concert platforms but it has been featured in Nagayya's Telugu movie of yore 'Tyagayya'. Some vidwans told me that the authenticity of the kriti remains unestablished (like a few other compositions of the bard)- so also the arohana avarohana!! Nagayya's version is very close to Devamanohari.
keerthi could kindly throw light.
