clarifications on ghana ragas
hi rasikas,
could anybody help in pointing out links to:
1.characheristics of ghana ragas
2. how may ghana ragas are available ?(List)
3. on what basis the ghana ragas are grouped into 5?
4.as know to all prathama(1st)-ghana-raga-panchaka(nata, gowla, arabhi, varali, sri) and
dwithiya(2nd)-ghana-raga-panchaka(narayana gowla, reethigowla, bowli, natakuranji, kedaram)
is there any such groups apart from these ?
thanks,
ajay simha

Re: clarifications on ghana ragas
I was not even aware of a second ghana raaga quintet in practice (which usually precedes the theory). Is this a commonly known thing? Is there a set of compositions explicitly identified for this quintet like we have the tyAgarAja pancharatnam?

I recall having heard that Sriranjani & Bhuvinidasudane form part of the minor pancharatnams.

No there is only cEtulAra in (nATa )Bhairavi, may be Sri Ganapathy (Saurashtram) and ending with gItArtamu ( SuruTTI) !
Thought Ghana meant easily identified - which means many rAgAs as begun by SrI tyAgaraja svAmi is ghana!

[:cough;] [:cough:] - we should include , in all that inclusiveness , the repeat rAgAs played by nAdasvaram artistes in the 1 hour prior to the pancharatnam - which also started to be [:cough:] telecast at some point , don't know from when onwards!
rA -rA -mAyinTi - asAvEri
nAdasudharasam - Arabhi
yOchana - darbar
...??
At least two new ones !!

A secondary set of ghana ragas is said to be
Saranga nata
Bouli
Narayana Gaula
Ritigowla
And one more...
Can't remember exactly

Re: clarifications on ghana ragas
Heard something about this at the pancaratna singing in Dallas Metro at a house. The rAgAs that were selected in the pancaratnam were selected because in those days these rAgAs were deemed suitable for tAnam singing - whether that is the tAnam of today or the tAnam as in caturdanDi needs clarified.
The difference was discussed somewhere in this presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et4CE6d37J4

Re: clarifications on ghana ragas
There is a varnam composed by Smt Suguna purushottaman in which the pUrvAngam is in the first set of ghana ragams and the uttarAngam is in the second set, with Nattakuranji in the stead of salanga nattai
