chAyAgauLa - Dikshitar

Adding "Dikshitar" as a reference is rather redundant, because only he composed in it. Two kritis in fact :

1) neelOtpalAmbikE nitya - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2YBhjuibLo - the raga name appears in this kriti as well. Sung by Meera Krishnan from her own channel.

and 2) sarasvatyA bhagavatyA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0g1QC1rrlI&t=48s - by Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan (an authority on Dikshitar)

Some vocal recordings of sarasvatyA bhagavatyA also exist - but at first glance the sangatis are different from Kalpagam mami's version. Deekshitar has used gaura for gauLa in raga mudra and he uses the words chAyA gaura in this one.

Note : I know, Mambalam Sisters are still contemporary etc. etc.. But many of Dikshitar's kritis are quite rare, these are the only recordings I can ever find. So hope the mods will tolerate me.

Now about this rAgA itself - this is a janya of mAyAmALavagauLa and scalar in it's approach - no "extraordinary stuff" (at least from the recordings). It's arohanam and avarohanam is

Aro : S R1 M1 P N3 S
Avaro : S N3 D1 P M1 G3 S R1 S - so phrases like MGS come often.

Request rasikas to download these things with some addons in their browsers or freeware. These are rare stuff.

Avaro : S N3 D1 P M1 G3 S R1 S - so phrases like MGS come often.
One small correction: ArOhaNa phrases have P D1 S or P D1 S N3 S instead of P N3 S.

Smt Kalpakam Swaminathan's version appears most closely aligned with SSP (see notation at http://ibiblio.org/guruguha/ssp_cakram1-4.pdf) except for the following:

(i) varayA (shrI) is absent in the pallavi,

(ii) In the anupallavI the words "sAhitya" at 1:46 has a phrase D P N; which should be D S N and

(iii) 1:52 has parA'dvayayA sounding like M G R S which she typically played and taught as M G S N.

Prof SR Janakiraman has fixed these in his interpretation. If anyone reading this has a recording of his rendition, I request them to post it here.
