dhautapanchamam - Venkatamakhi / Dikshitar

Post by SrinathK »

The 69th asampUrna mEla and the analogue of dhAtuvardhani. Alternate spelling : dhowtapanchamam

Aro : S R3 G3 M2 P D1 N3 S
Avaro : S N3 D1 P M2 G3 R3 S

By now you must have noticed the trend yourself - the asampUrna mElas tend to be far more non-linear (even if the scale itself is given as linear, that school tries to differentiate the mElas apart by introducing specific phrases to avoid the phrase overlapping problem that arises in the more modern sampUrna mElas), and this one is no different. This will be a recurring phenomenon every time I touch a mElakarta rAgA, and as it turns out, quite a few of them start with D.

The non-linear phrases in dhautapanchamam are - PDS, SNP, NPNS and RGS. Muthuswami Dikshitar has a sole kriti in this rAgA - mAtangi marakatAngi

The only recordings of this kriti I could find are : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0DKvbxuhA8 - Dwaram Durgaprasad playing a superb meditative rendition.

And Sai Venkatesh Balsubramaniam (as it turns out, he is a researcher who has also learnt from S Rajam) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDPsUpE4p6w
