Hindustani friendly Carnatic ragas/krithis

Post by MadhavRayaprolu »

My Hindustani teacher wants to learn some Carnatic krithis. He has lot of South Indian fan following so he wants to sing a Carnatic piece once in a while in his concerts. Does anyone have any recommendations for Hindustani-musician-friendly ragas and krithis? Ideally popular krithis is better for this purpose.

So far my teacher tried Vatapi and Jagadoddharana and both worked very well. Of course he had to smoothen some of the Carnatic gamakams in Vatapi to make them HM friendly but it didn’t take away the essence. Looking for similar pieces.

I thought about venkatachala nilayam, but HM concerts end with sindhubhairavi so it won’t work. Brindavana Saranga should work, thanks! Keep in mind the raga doesn’t need to exist in HM. Any krithi/raga that sounds good with smoother gamakams and plain notes would be fine.

Akhilandeshwari or Jambupate? Smooth ones, I think.. there must be a lot of MD songs that fit the bilL, check out renderings by T Satyavati.

CM concerts too seem to end with Sindhubhairavi, the raga is sung at the tail end of concerts, at least. It always seems to signal that time’s up.

Akhilandeshwari is a great suggestion! Jambupathe: concerned the gamakam on M might throw a wrench for non carnatic singers :)

Hamsanandi - close to Purya with elements of Marwa - will be a good choice for a HM vidwan to understand and practice the gamaka aspects of carnatic music.

Pandit Ronu Majumdar and J A Jayanth included this in their jugalbandi at Brahma Gana Sabha during their 'December season' performance. After a hearty aalaap they surprised the rasikas with the carnatic kriti 'Paavana Gurupavanapuradheesam aasraye' (popularized by singer Jesudas) with Ronuji singing the Pallavi sahitya at the beginning.

A Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi in Aabheri (Bimplas) was the 'main' of the concert. This too is another suitable scale for a HM vidwan to attempt kritis like Nagumo in CM.
