Youtube has a video of Dr. Balamuralikrishna singing a thillana in Ahir Bhairav.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Emc18GpAeRY

I would appreciate if someone can point to an online audio source for this song. Thanks.

To my ears, bindumAlini is a closer cousin to Ahir bhairav, more than chakravAka.

Anyone sharing a similar idea?

Bindumalini is a vakra raga and is dhaivata varjyam in aro!
How can it match Ahir bhairavi except being a janya of mela 16?

I hear chakravAkam all along and I noticed a touch of bidumalini somewhere. Then again, the first time I heard it, the very beginning was reminiscent of sindhubhairavi!
It is nice to hear performers give us a no-nonsense opening which spells out the rAgA clearly without any musings or deliberations. Nice to hear them when they stay with the rAgA without switching suddenly to another, all in the first half a minute of starting a rAgA...

Of course, they may do all that and still we may not have any idea about the rAgA at all!

Guys, u are discussing something that my heart sings.....
I am crazy about Bindumalini I dont know the reason y I get so much facinated to listen to this raga. Its eternal.
U might hav heard Dr Ramani playing "Entha Muddo Entha Soggasu"...a masterpiece in itself...

Are there any other compositions other than Tyagaraja swami's....

Yes NAAda priya

This raaga is a very divine raga and it touches ones' heart . The krithi Entha Muddo Entha Soggasu played by Lalgudi on the violin , also bring out the divinity of this raga . But till now it has been a raga which is well elaborate on the violin .. i.e instrument .. I think even in voval if the raga is elaborated, it it really be great .

The previous discussion on Ahir Bhairav has raised this point in my mind about ragha bhava. Is it not technically right for a musician to just sing within the battery limits of the raga strictly adhering to the swara patterns specified for the arohana & avarohana. I would be obiged if somebody could explain the raga bhava of which everyone talks about so much.

I can understand that if you keep on listening to various established vidwans' alapanas of a particular raga over a period of time, the features of the raga get established in one's mind. Is this called the raga bhava? If some musician deviates from this impression of a raga in one's mind, eventhough he may be adhereing to the raga's arahona & avarohana swara permutaions & combinations technically, is he not singing with raga bahava?

I do agree with arasi's views which is as follows:

"It is nice to hear performers give us a no-nonsense opening which spells out the rAgA clearly without any musings or deliberations."

Why? Because several sanchAras are common :) - Also the kAlapramANa of the two rAgas lend well to unfold slowly.

g r m , p n d p , m g m r s are prayOgas that bring out both rAgas.

p n s , s d p g r s are couple of sanchAra that establishes bindumAlini from Ahir bhirav effectively.

I've read in a lot of places that Ahir-Bhairav is the same raga as Chakravakam. Chakravakam is undoubtedly a divine raga, more than most others that can bear the caption. The procession of Chakravakam is gentle and sensitive, its almost as if the raga speaks to you through the song, a sort of message instantly distinguishable from the poetry! I owe a splendid afternoon of several hours of guitar practice to this raga.

One can never ever forget the Aahi Bhairav composed by Viswanathan Ramamurthy for the film Karnan, beautifully rendered by Dr.Sirkazhi Govindarajan - 'Ullathil Nalla Ullam' which took this raga to the nook and corner of India. What a great classical rendition.! :D

Ahir Bhairav though an equivalent of Chakravaham very rarely or won't have P in arohanam.

There is an excellent song in the film "PAttum Bharathamum" - Deivathin thereduthu deviyai thedu -Music by MSV and extraordinarily rendered by TMS.This song starts with a virutham "karpanaikku .....".Available in muisc india online or raga or you tube.KIndly check up.

There is another song "Bhoomadevi pole vAzhum jeevan needhane" from the film 'Pancha kalyani' - Music by Shyam and sung by SPB.A good one too.

tungA teera virAjam by Maharajapuram Santhanam (LGJ and VR accompanying) - this is a concert from 1982. The Ahir bhairav portion is from "mangaLakara mantrAlaya" - From Kosmik Music's channel (before that the first half of the song is in sAlaga bhairavi, so you can get a lot of phrases for that as well, Santhanam having owned this piece)

This is one of the best concerts of this trio in my collection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta44N_seTj4
