yess that is what i keep thinking,
but the R1 is so very dominant and independent at least in avarohana prayogas
because of this (r1) the raga gets the independent stature

The way Vedas are recited, generally it is Revati=Bairagi Bhairav. This seems to be an ancient melody.

Oh yes, I forgot that - so many Veda mantras can only be rEvati. However, this name and the use of this raga proper. must be more recent

rEvati is the oldest rAgA of all Indian music.

I think my earlier statement about rEvati wasn't well composed. While the current name and current use of this rAgA in CM is 20th century, the form of this rAgA has always existed, and it goes all the way back to the Vedas. The one word I can use for this rAgA is -- ethereal.

Listen to this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbRsKhHbc8Y&t=42s - it has only 3 notes (and so goes the entire vEda), but what can it ever conceivably be other than rEvati? It's spine tingling, makes my hairs stand on end. The power and resonance of the brahmanas who recite the Veda mantras ought to teach us a thing or two of how it's done.

This rAgA is the oldest rAgA of them all, older than the very concept of a rAgA itself. I would not find it an exaggeration to claim that it came right after A-U-M ...

Coming back to present day, an ethereal composition in an ethereal raga, by MS Amma : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k0eZFAZR9k -- It's actually quite a feat to nail the opening of the song like this. According to her, Nedunuri Krishnamurthy should have been made Sangeetha Kalanidhi for this tune.
