Hello All,
Could we discuss Raaga Charukeshi?
kripaya palya - by Swati Thirunal is the only kriti that I have heard in this raaga
Which are the other popular Kriti's in this Raaga.
Are there any RTP's?
Kindly share some audio.

Thanks
Paddu

If Charukeshi is around ,Sripathi Cannot be far behind !!:P

I love this one too .BMK's RTP over AIR in the 80s used to be very lilting (Devadideva Pahimaam ..Divya Prabha.....) Very very soulful. Not sure If I have a recording though.
Right now I can promise you a beauty from Angamali KJ jose and a clip frpm the swaraprasthara of TVS in a home concert.

Hallo Padduji, Charukesi is a beautiful Raga, depicting primarily shrunga Rasam and karunaa rasam, but ironically it has only very few kritis
The Ragam is known as SHRITARANGINI AS PER DIKSH.SCHOOL.
The following kritis are in charukesi
KrupayApAlaya sourE-S.ThirnAL
Ada modi kaladE-Thyagaraja
And my own kriti:-
innamum enai ALa thiruvuLlam illayO-Ramaraj(myself)
Please view and listen to(link ref:www.karnatik.com/c3483.shtml)

In film music the following yester-year master pieces were very equally popular.
MANMATHALiLAYAI VENDRAAR UNDO-(P.Shivan) sung by MKT(haridoss)
GAANA LOLAN MADHANA GOPALAN-SUNG BY MLV-in Nalla thambi
AADAL KAANEERO-SUNG BY-MLV Name of the film not known
Mayilmeedu viLayAdi vA-comp[oser name not known.

Well, well. I'm happy to be branded as a Charukesi Chaser. :-)

Here's one more - http://www.sangeethapriya.org/~sripathy ... rukesi.MP3. This was the first Hindustani Charukesi that Coolkarniji sent me. I must have listened to it non-stop around 10-15 times then.

My wish for the day - A tarana in Charukeshi by Gundecha Brothers. If anyone comes across it or a tarana by anyone for that matter, please let me know even if it's commercial.

Charukesi raag has fascinated many music directors. I am sure that Dakshinamoorthy would have given it in any of his films. I do not have his collections. Yet, in the movie Swati Tirunal, KJY has attempted to render Kripaya Palaya in a disciplined form.

There is another tukkadA "Ayiram Ayiram" by Smt neelA rAmamurthi in chArukesi. I particularly love Smt MLV's rendition , it is excellent . I recollect even hearing the same few decades before where Smt MLV sang.

Welcome back Kaumaram
The rupee seems to get stronger every time you disappear totally -into your professional zone-for short intervals .
Wonder if there is some corelation !

One of the best demonstrations of Charukeshi , on a Concert Platform.
Take care not to miss the sargams and Ajoy's way of showing the difference in styles of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Amir Khan.
Includes a great tribute to Chennai and its Music Practitioners.
Ajoy- Truly one of the finest jewels in the HM scene today.

Sripathi
Gundecha have released an album called "ancestral voices' featuring yaman and Charukesi .You can google and find the nearest location to purchase it from. The charukesi is a scintillating take on a Kabir Bhajan -Jheeni Jhheni Chadariya- and I have offered a few seconds of that phase as a demo clip.

I'll just throw this here. When you omit the pancamam of chArukEShi, you obtain the rAga, cArukuntaLam. Smt Baby ShrIrAm has composed a song in this raga.

I did and it is excellent! I loved alapana. The pleading tone of the krithi's sahitya seemed aptly brought out by the raga. I also liked the spacing of the syllables (i.e. not over crowded). Thanks!

Sangeethapriya had an excellent Podhigai video of Sathur Sisters singing three Charukesi pieces -

innum en manam - Lalguid varnam,
either Adamodi Galada or Kripaya Palaya and
Tamil song

It is wonderful to listen to it in the early morning ( which I have done several times)

I do not have the exact location but it was under Sri. Ramasundaram's video section

Thank you Coolji, Sripathi sir for sharing the audio.
This is one of my favourite raaga.
It is wonderful to listen to it in the early morning - sramaswamy
I feel this raaga soothes your mind and gives a lot of peace.

There is one Mukesh and Latha song in the movie Mere Humsafar
- Kisi raha mein kisi mode par-
I think this is in Charukeshi.

Coolji, could we have some carnatic music servings please?
Please pardon me if I am sounding like Oliver Twist.

Thanks
Paddu

Oliver Twist??

Fagin would be more appropriate !!! Prising out that last hidden Penny..
The sweeter Fagin I mean , played by Sir Alec Guinness in the Musical.
(was it ?It has been a long long time since I watched it)

ramaraj, I have heard all the songs posted by you , though I do not suddenly remember.. there is adage that in every nook and corner of the world , there is a keralite chaayai (tea)stall and there is an old saying in oldendays bombay 'kidhar accountancy hai, udhar madhrasi hai. likewise ,whenever a raaga is mentioned , there is a kriti by ramaraj ..keep it up . your profound knowledge of cm is aneighbour's envy like ONIDA GOBILALITHA

Lalgudi's version of Ada Modi is very haunting-he sort of defines the Ragam there.

One more kriti (not so popular) comes to my mind is 'Aneeshwaram' by HMB.

One by Trichy tyAgarAjan is 'aadivarum aruviyilE'(tamil kriti) was famous some years back.

Charukesi - ArOhaNam : PoorvAnga (sa ri ga ma) is ShankarAbharanam and UttarAnga (pa da ni Sa) is tOdi.

Charukesi - AvarOhaNam : PoorvAnga (Sa ni da pa) is tOdi and the uttarAnga (ma ga ri sa) is ShankarAbharanam.

This rAg's 'ma' moorchanai (shruti bEdam) takes to Gowri manohari

This rAg's 'ni' moorchanai (shruti bEdam) becomes Vachaspathi.

At last, I have come to "C"!

The Lalgudi school is well known for their handling of chArukEsi, with Lalgudi Jayaraman having composed a pada varnam in it.
So here it is : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvVo0gAc4Qk - from Sanskriti Series' Channel.

And a vocal rendition by Maharajapuram Santhanam (it was a favourite of his) :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU0cOUvWKD4

It wouldn't be a chArukEsi thread without ADa mODi galadE :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrTgy8IsQOA - MMI sings in his "old school" way

And here's Lalgudi Jayaraman playing it :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_TC6rORbug - Part 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVYJj0jxGlg - Part 2

Semmangudi at work : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBezfS2gOKk

And finally, Mandolin Shrinivas (still feel for his premature end whenever I come across a recording of his) :
