Goks,

There are many renditions of mamava.
1. Vijay Siva in a Music Today album titled Raamamrutham- a slokam ends the song
This is 'my' best.
2. MS amma - SaReGaMa - radio recitals - CD3
3. Bala Murali Krishna - Anand Audio titled Dikshithar krithis
4. Sikkil Gurucharan - Rajalakshmi audio titled Ramayanam
Hope these help. But none of this has manirangu raga alapana.

Sanjay also sings mAmava pattabhirama really well. A few of years ago, at an off-season concert at MFAC, he sang a brillaint alapana and had an elaborate swaraprastara at navaratna mantape. The influence of GNB's music was ver much evident in that .

The concert also had a great renditions of mundu venuka (darbar), bagumeera kanunatho (shankarabharanam) and shivakama sundari (mukhari).

I wish this concert is made available commercially.

It is a good one by Sanjay. nagai muralidhar and srimushnam raja rao accompanies him.

hi,

can people enlighten me on the stories behind the following lines in the charanam of the oothukkAdu maNirangu song "(y)Arenna sonnAlum" question regarding a few charanam:

tOlayaRindu kani dUra eRindu
veRum tOlai tuNindoruvan tandAnallavO!

mElaippiDi avalai vENumenRE terindu
virumbi oruvan anRu tandAnallavO!

kAlamellAm tavam irundu kanindu kani
kaDittu suvaittoruvaL tandALallavo!

I know the second one is kucEla. But what about the first and third one?

Thanks

Arun,
I am not sure if I understood your question, but this is what I took it to be: here is the explanation for the sabari mOkSam episode - kAlam ellAm tavam irundu, kanindu - Sabari spent YEARS waiting for the lord to show up in the ASram - her guru (matanga, IIRC) had asked her to wait for Him as he left his mortal coil, and left the ASram in SabarI's care, and per his instructions, she waited patiently performing penance (tavam irundu), and in the process she became old and wizened and wise (kanindu). And when the lord did arrive, she was so clear and insistent that she would only offer sweet fruits (kani) to Him, that she tasted them first before presenting them to him (kaDittu, suvaittu tandAL).
Is this what you were looking for? The words literally dance in front of ones eyes, right?
This is open to other interprettation and corrections...

i did some googling and got some information on the vidura episode but there seem varying versions. Some say vidura's wife gives Krishna banana skin instead of banana as she forgets herself in devotion to Lord and vidura chides her etc. In other versions, it is vidura himself who gives the banana skin forgetting himself. But in this song, the words imply that it is vidura who is bold enough (tuNIndu) to give it, sort of giving a connotation that he knew he was giving the skin (??) - or that could an extraneous interpretation i am making.

Can someone give a better picture?

Arun

Ksrimech I was there at the MFAC concert too - brilliant Manirang - probably the only time I hae heard it as a main! TMK often sings Mamava Pattabhirama in the tukkada section - his rendition is also very nice. I also liked a Priya Sisters renditions in one of their earlier commercial releases.

Among the veterans, DKP/DKJ had a marked preference for this raga.

Nothing that can come close to Mamava Pattabhirama in this raga though - it is truly the Pattabhirama of Manirang compositions!

There is also a mISu krishNayyar's composition 'nIku sari' in this rAga
I know of tyAgarAjA's "nIku sarievvarurA" in maNirangu - can someone provide the lyrics for the mISu kRSNayyar song? Another composition of mISu kRSNayyar is "SRI rukmiNi", which is sung with a beautiful and lively cittasvaram (AlattUr veNkatESa ayyar).

nIku sari evarUrA is by Tyagaraja but no such song is there by Mishukrishna. Apart from shrI rukmiNIsha there is another song by Mishu Krishna Iyer in maNirangu-pAvanamurA.

Ashwin: Do you have the lyrics for shrI rukmiNIsha?

DRS/CML,
I have a few questions about this composition:

1. Who is this song in praise of? it starts of with SrI rukmiNI (lakshmI?)...but isn't SambarAri vairi, Siva and so, isn't Siva sahOdari, saraswatI? (HKMB in his kIravANi composition amba vAni nannu, also refers to SambarAri vairi sahOdari).
2. What does kambu kandari mean?
3. bimbAdari - shouldn't it be bimbAdhari?
4. prEmAdari - what does this mean?

THANKS a TON

The song is in praise of rukmiNi AKA lakShmi. kambu is conch and kambukandhari is "Her with the neck shaped like a conch" (Considered mark of beauty). bimbAdhari is correct. prEmAdari, dont know. Looks like an error.

lakShmi is also praised as the sister of ISvara/Siva, though not as well-known/popular a concept as pArvati being a sister of nArAyaNa. So, that is OK.

I recall DK Pattammal having presented Purandara dasa's "iko namma swami jagadantaryaami" in Manirangu during a radio recital for Akashvani. Maharajapuram Santanam sang "yaar enna sonnaalum" a composition of Oothukkadu - available in a cassette recording. MLV's "Potri yaam" (thiruvempavai) is vintage Manirangu - she may have sung pallavis in this raga as well.
