Using a Tuner App for Carnatic Music

Post by Vayoo Flute »

A tuner app can be very useful for making sure you are hitting the right swaras. Especially useful for beginning students who are not yet at the stage where they can identify accurately. However, most tuner apps are meant for Western music. Some of these apps allow you to change the settings. The following video shows how to change the settings so it is suitable for Indian music.

"Equi-tempered scale" is an unusual usage which potentially carries a different meaning from the correct usage "equally tempered" scale or "equal temperament".

I take your point. I don't know where I got the term "Equi-tempered" but I have been using it for a long time. I must have got it from somewhere.

Dear Vayoo and Uday,

Agree, absolutely. Of all the sense perceptions, the hardest to perceive and understand is auditory - it settles in gradually and after many, many repetitions. It is not as immediate and palpable as the sense of taste, touch, smell or sight.

Thus music and discovering the musician within, which is driven primarily by auditory sense perception, is a long winded process. However, when the aural sense can be complemented by a visual perception, and the musician can literally SEE their singing, along with Guru's loving guidance, musicianship can take a quantum leap forward.

Here is an innovative platform called GuruSangeet (http://gurusangeet.com/) that lets music teachers give lessons - right from ear training to complicated gamakas, which can be curated onto a cloud server and downloaded into a mobile device (currently Apple).
