Re: Lyrics for Padmanabha pahi
thanks for the quick reply. If T.K.Govinda Rao's book on complete lyrics of Swati Tirnual is taken as reference for the meaning, then "dvipapAsAra" can't be (1) single word (2) the 'a' kAra at the end of that word can't be deerkha. Because dvipapa means savior of elephant and sAra stands alone, probably to be joined with the next line, as "sAra guNavasanA"
Also in the charaNam, like most vAggEyakAras, Swati TirunAl also uses last word rhyming in each of the four lines. "sAndra", "jEndra", "chandra". This excludes the first line of charaNam as given here and also in TKG's book, with the last word as "netra". If we look at the meaning there, "chArummukharjitha chandra" means 'beautiful face shining like moon" and "nEtraparilasita karuNa sAndra" means "eyes shining with dense benevolance (karanua)". Also in the given format if we sing, in the second tAlavatta, "sAndra" is extended to fill the last four akshara kAlas. I don't think the Maharaja would have sung it that way. Rather if we break the 1st line of charaNam after "chandra", then the meaning breaks properly, rhyming fits in correctly (chandra instead of nEtra to rhyme with sAndra, jEndra and chandra). The only thing is then to extend the first line of charNam to fit in the tAlavattam. That is fine, since we anyway are unnecessarily extending sAndra in the second line. So to me it should be as follows:
charaNam:
chArumukhArjita (extend it either here...) chandrA (...or here)
netraparilasita karunA sAndra
BhUrikOpahata khala danujendra

Re: Lyrics for Padmanabha pahi
Taranananda,
All your observations reg the sAhitya of this song are absolutely correct.
1. padmanAbha pAhi dwipapa! sAra-guNa-vasana! shaure is how the pallavi should be read. It is unfortunate that singers pause at sAra and repeat the line from padma.. to sAra. This joins a long list of meaningless padacchEdas cultivated for the sake of so-called musical felicity.
2. The carana is indeed as you give it; only you have a typo mukhArjita for mukha-jita. The first two lines are as you give them -
cAru-mukha-jita-candra!
nEtra-parilasita-karunA-sandra !
It takes the rare musician who is sensitive to the smooth, meaningful flow of sAhitya, to be able to refine the received 'wisdom' of faulty pATha-s, and sing the better versions. The challenge here is not just to spread out the first line over a tAla avarta, but to also sing the second line successfully without giving the appearance that it is cluttered/ clogged with too many syllables.
I sincerely wish more people sing it this way.
