Accompanied by his son ramani - vocal support ,TV RamAnujachAryulu - violin and ramkumAr - mridhangam

Before the review , just wanted to remind that this vidwan is singing in nanganallur today (Jan 04,2009). Patrons of nanganallur and around please hear this rare and great vidwan.

1. sarasijanAbhA "varnam" (R)- kAmbOdhi - vadivelu
2. gam gaNapathE (RS S)- hamsadhwani -HMB
3. mEru samAna (R N S)- maayamAlavagowlai - T
neraval in "alakala muddunu tilakapu tIrunu"

4. ambA vAni(R N S) - keeravAni - HMB
5. marugelarA - jayanthashree - T

6A.sreenivasA tava charaNam (R N S T)- kharaharapriya - PSivan
5 minutes each for rAga alApanai, violin return, neraval , swaram and tani
6B.tani

7A. slOkham "sudhAm brahmavichAra...veenA pushtaka" - dhanyAsi + shanmughapriyA + begaDa + kalyAni?
7B. shringArapuRadEEshwari sharadE - kalyAni?? - padmacharan
8. manavE mantralayA (why there is doubt?? )- suddha sArang -padmAcharaN

9. deva baNda nAma swami - durgA -PD
10. sakala kalai aRuLum shree saraswathiyE nanmaiyum yeLLam tArum nalinAkAnthiyE - saraswati + nalinakANthi + amrithavarshini + Anandabhairavi + kalyAni + bhAgeshri + sAveri + keeravani - T srinivAsan
11. shanta ahimsA murthi (R) - sindhubhairavi - mAyuram vishwanAtha sAstri

I asked this question at the end of the concert?

Shri sankar, can I say your bAni is very much some kind of maharAjapuram vishawanAtha Iyer touch,as he has learnt from Smt vallabham kalyAnasundaram , who was the sister of mayuram vishwanAtha sAstri

Shri sankAr answered , you can say some what , but he told he was majorly influenced by musiri and he has listened maximum to KVN . He went on to say that KVN is my all time favourite.

That answer KVN did give a hint to his concert , in one word it was balanced and every number was very good to excellent .There was no sixer and four like what you hear in a typical concert , but that was very much compensated by his spread with MM gowlai , keeravAni and kharahara priyA.

His son ramani supported very well, particularly his voice was quite good and he sang just like his dad in a true open throated fashion.

I was most happy to hear rams RamkumAr , simply the trademark UKS nAdham was there . He was strokeful but never banged. Particularly in mAyamAlava gowlai neraval and swaras , rams- shankAr had the touch of uks-ssi in lots of places.

The violinist TVKR professional experience was exhibited everywhere (He must have played 10 times more in concerts of the other 3 vidwans put together). There was always proportion in the play.

IMHO The only negatives in this concert was the 7B. shringArapuRadEEshwari sharadE - kalyAni?? - padmacharan, which I and sathej had no clue, shri sankAr said it was a light kalyAni, that matter is now in subjudice till we hear the concert recording. Also in the rAga mAliga slokham "sudhAm brahmavichAra...veenA pushtaka" , the begada signal was very light , he sang more like shankarabharanam , only the violinit played a clean begaDa.

This is my 3rd or 4th concert of his .To me this musician with his experience and musical clarity must have been in the league of say in between OST and neyveli age bracket and concert slot bracket(age I am speculating the concert slot i am not speculating). To me the top pick was his keeravAni,incidentally my first experience of this musician was in smt mangalam ganapathi vaggeyakara concert , that day the keeravani was the top no in an otherwise so so concert(THE Review is somewhere in this jungle) .

Thanks to mantrAlaya, this musician had rasikas from all continents newzealand, britain ,US and ofcourse Asia with  spearheading, a well balanced concert attendance just like his well balanced music.

I had the great fortune of being part of this meet even though i was late and thanks every one to allow me inside after 90mts of the concert. Sri Bangalore Shankar with Sri Ramanujacharulu on Violin (i think i got the name correctly) and Sri Ram on the Mrudhangam was just too good. If i were to choose top 5 concerts of this season i had been to, this is surely be one among them. Thanks to the wonderful ambience and a good PA system (Kannan Audios), it was indeed a pleasant experience of attending an excellent concert presentation. I saw glimpses of Sri Thiruvengadu Jayaraman when Sri Balaji was singing the vrutham and also there was a senior person mentioning about the richness of music given by Sri Shankar by bringing in the styles of Semangudi to GNB. I had the oppurtunity to introduce myself to many of the members and was happy to have made it for this meet even though late. Better Late than never!!

I sincerely hope that this concert will be upload and i am locking forward to have link as i would seriously love to treasure this concert. Thanks to Shyams and Coolkari ji for having organised this meet and looking forward to being a part next time too. I would not be in a position to make it for the 6th as my son Sathya has a concert 6 - 8:30pm at Padma Sarangapani Cultural academy, School premises, Virugambakkam. I need to pick him up from school by 3:30 pm and the get ready to go for the concert.

it was an excellent concert. I truly enjoyed every minute of it. I was glad to catch Ram in action (for the first time) as I will miss him on the 6th. The food after the concert was as good. Thanks to coolji for organizing and for "mantra" and family for being wonderful hosts.

That kalyani was indeed light - almost like yaman. I thought begada was begadaish only.

Post concert vijay, mohan and I had nice chat over coffee although Vijay walked us half way across the city for it ;)

Excellent concert.

Despite getting up just early enough, my departure was delayed and I missed a few minutes.

Mridangist Ram has come a million miles since the early concerts in which I saw him perform. High points were his knowledge of the songs (or ability to learn very, very quickly) and consequent appropriate following, his anticipation of neraval and swara, and his over-all confidence.

The concert was followed by an excellent lunch, for which many thanks to our hosts.

The whole jigsaw of hosts, organisers, musicians needed to be there. The jigsaw was complete, and it was a wonderful picture. Many thanks to all!

I had a great time at the concert although I missed a lot since I was busy taking pictures (will post after getting back to Mumbai - thanks to a slow internet connection). I agree that the vidwan has a very measured and balanced style that is quite reminiscent of KVN. TKV Ramanujacharyulu was a great asset on the violin.

Since a laya expert has already given his opinion on Ram's playing, I feel no need to add anything except to say that it sounded great to hear the natural sound of the mrudangam. I just wish his tani was slightly longer although I understand he was trying to work within the limitations of the time remaining....

My thanks to the host Shyam and his family for a wonderful concert and deliciouos food!

As Arun mentions, we had a good chat over Coffee with Mohan joining in. BTW, Arun - we walked only about half a KM!

Enjoyed the concert a lot especially the Kharaharapriya suite. It was a wonderful lunch and my thanks to Shyam and his family for hosting the concert, meeting and lunch.

In the evening I managed to catch a couple of items of Sri Shankar's Nanganallur temple concert (he commenced with Kalyani - Ata tala varnam, then Sri Mahaganapathe in Nattai, the Sri Venkatesam in Kalyana Vasantam).

mohan,
Were you the clean shaven aussie sitting predictably next to a big personality from a small neighbouring country newzealand ;) ?.I did not know you were mOhan, a big hi to you!!!

cool,
Just few words about Shyam's(mantrA) dad Shri kalyAnasundaram. He is a bit of very special man to me . I started to listen CM a lot because of yearly RAdhA kalyAna utsavam in nungambakkam(it is held close to 75 years even today),especially there was one vidwan whose name was Late Sri T.S.Krishnamoorthy Bhaagavathar from a triplicane panduraNga bhajana mandali who used to mesemerize with all his renditions year after year.Shyam's dad was a big organizer there . You must have seen how Shri KalyAnasundaram and few others adored and respected the artists not just today even for our prasanna venkatrAman's concert which unfortunately you could not make it!!

Nice to read about yet another concert of Shankar, whose music is captivating and haunts one's mind even after leaving the concert hall. If anyone did record the concert, please do share the clips. Would be nice to see a few photos as well.

Rajesh yes that was me! Coolji I had to visit a relative in Nanganallur so couldn't stay too long for the evening concert. Also after successfully identifying Kalyani and Nattai, my daughter started to get restless and wanted to play musical chairs in the hall.

I will try and make it to the GNB celebrations on the 6th and hope to catch a few of you there. Am off to Sanjay's concert now.

Your daughter was surely naughty in nAttai , and she had a very fine reason to be restless during kalyAni. Just kidding :)

In Mohan's concert at Swamy's Hall (the same hall where Bombay Prashant will be perfroming on the 6th), the highlight for me surely was his 3 years-old daughter identifying the rAgam with effortless ease (even as she was busy playing with something) as her dad played a few strains of nATTai to test the system! :)

:) "me sick" indeed. I came back from a balmy weather to 2 inches of snow and a cold day (20F). As we pulled into our house, I was thinking - No way you are going to make me shovel snow the day I get back - not jet lagged and stuffed up with a cold. But now to top it off we are now expecting 6 more inches followed by a nose dive in temp (down to 0F or below as lows) :( !

I shake my head and ask my city angel - Now dear - aren't you supposed to give me a warm welcome? I also scratch my head and ask myself Now, tell me again - Why exactly did we have to get back from chennai? :)

Arun

PS: Coming back to Chicago after a visit to India during summer is a much better deal

Arun,
Good to know you and yours got home safe and sound.
A tip from a seasoned snow pusher: Go out there and shovel! A tested remedy for jet-lag. Your head gets clear, the cobwebs of fogginess in the head get blown away. Treat yourself to a mug of hot chocolate when you shed your gloves, cap and boots. Believe me, it is as good as coming out of the sabha giddy with good music and topping it off a with a nice cup of coffee in the canteen. Only catch is, you have to like shoveling as I do!
Looking forward to the arrival of another traveler from your parts soon. Wish he had been there for the season, at least for a bit...

arasi - after 18 years in the area, one would think I wouldnt mind the snow ;). But you are right in that fix for jet-lag (had to shovel yesterday, snowblow today)

After a few years in Chennai, and just missing it on my last UK trip, I'd love to see snow, but not to have to shovel it!

"Coming back to Chicago after a visit to India during summer is a much better deal" or is it the other way around? You come in summer and soon get into the depressing fall and the dreaded winter, but when winter is there already can the spring be far behind?. Ruminating over the season's music should keep you warm!

After 6 years living there, I miss a lot of things about the US, but snow sure isn't one among them. I just cannot for the life of me understand how my parents voluntarily travel to the US in December - "It's so cool and refreshing, da" :-)

On days like today (snowing, with temperatures taking a nose-dive into single digits - in Fahrenheit, that is), it is only thoughts of Spring that can keep one going! Not only is it dreary out there, but also so cold, that breathing in becomes synonymous with 'brain freeze'! :)

Prashant, December is nowhere like January - Temperatures hardly reach the single digits in December as they do with unfailing regularity in December...So, maybe your parents are doing the smart thing!

Kji, katri seems nice and balmy now, but, I am sure if I were to experience it these days, I would long for the coldest day in January! ('ikkaraikku akkarai paccai' - the grass is always greener on the other side/bank)

coolji true indeed. Snowfall for us is 3 months (maybe more) - actually it is worse in the north-east. In Chicago, it just slaps you in the face with cold. Right now (mid morning), it is err.. a nice -12F :) - but with wind chill your body perceives it as -32F . Although this is because we are in the midst of an artic cold blast (so normally it would be like 20F or so now - still no walk in the park). In the past we have had ridiculous wind chills of -50 to -60F and that is no exaggeration! I remember once walking from one office building to another in -50F (with windchill) weather - yikes, but also strangely exhilarating when you complete it.

I dont know what is worse - seering 42-45C or brrring -12F - I think both suck :) We need the middle-path.

True - the thought of winter can be depressing, but I meant that when you get back it is still like August or so, and August and September IMO are the best months here (pretty much ideal weather for me).

Brrr...I am the lone shoveler, reveler.
Yes, heard from back home that this winter is really a chiller. My old bones perhaps might not take it as well as they used to and I may join your chorus if I see mounds of snow when I return. Bah! dID I get alienated in a trice just because I sang praises of snow (NOT ice)!

No Ice this week. The Artic blast is ensuring that the temperature well below freezing. So we are left with nice snow and bone chilling "real feel" temperature. I cannot thank enough the heating system this week especially.

It's warming up in Chennai (although it was raining just now).

The figures don't seem any higher, but I've felt distinctly warmer for the past two days, and I'm thinking that winter may be over and summer on it's way...

The middle path is Bangalore, where you don't sweat in summer and shiver in winter still have all the advantages of a metro-city!
