subha ganesan@Sastri hall on Jan 12th, 2009
========================================
This concert was organized as part of MLV- rasikar manram trust.
Accompanied by Rajashree?? - violin and B.sivarAman - mrudangam
...
2. Varavallabha ramana(?,S)- hamsadwani - gnb
3. yAgyanAdulu - jayamanOhari - T

4. sammOdham chintayAmi(R) - suddadhanyAsi - ST
5. para kumaraNE - sAveri - PD
6. E tAvunarA(R N S T) - kalyAni - T
neraval in "sita gauri vagiswari"
...

I was late by 10 minutes and attended this concert from some where midway of hamsadhwani .There was definite touch of Smt MLV , her racy briga uruttal and swaras were very detailed in hamsadhwani and was the pick of the day. If you are unable to make up your mind between AbhOGi vs shreeranjani , the perfect antidote to it is listening to jayamanohari , her rendition was very fast and I felt her lyrical expresssions did not have the right voice azhuttam

The second pick of the day was her suddha dhanyAsi alApanai , it was very detailed and she presented it excellently. However the krithi did not have the shine as much as say a nArayanA or a himagiri thanayE which I thought she would take up. The next dAsar krithi was a good rendition , not heard this sAveri at all.

Smt MLV was my favourite when I grew up I liked her the most for her daring manOdharmam especially in tukkadas where she sprints very fast in different rAgamAligas. Also having said that , I always feel Smt MLV's alApanai longish. But however Smt MLV despite her long alApana had a proportionately long neraval and swaras . This disproportionate feeling came very much back in kalyAni. There was a 17 minute alApanai for main, the neraval was just for 4 minutes and swaras was for about 11 minutes with her kalyAni krithi not delivered with a bit of mediocre voice. More than the quantity crib, I found her neraval lacking the punch and was very mediocre , however swaras were just good.

Incidentally I would also state the choice of sAveri and kalyAni both sedate ones was a big miss than a hit combo.

The mridangist support was just good , I feel B.SivarAman has to improve his kAlapramanam ,I found him too good few years before but not this year. The violinist vidushi rAjashree?? was mediocre , her kalyAni was too much melancholy despite a beautiful alApanai by the vocalist. I had to leave at the end of main.

Overall this vidushi has definitely MLVian like vidwat, but did not have the MLV'ian sustained stamina and delivery .A mediocre to good concert , looking forward to hear her more, especially MLV like tukkadas. Some one else can fill the tukkada list and also the first few numbers.

samininne THodi varnam- first item

at the end she sang ayiram ayiram a song in charukesi and thillana in khamas of sri lalgudi jayaraman.
Sudhdha dhanyasi alapana and kalyani alapana was very good. I have heard mlv rendering parakumadadhe in saveri a dasar padham many times. It has been broadcast in radio also.

Ayiram Ayiram gOpiyargaL in chArukesi is certainly MLV 's brilliant tukkadA. That must have been a bad miss. Was there a rAga alApanai or neraval in hamsadhwani, if there is neraval can you let me know where that was sung.

There was only kalpana swaram and no neraval and ragam for the hamsadvani krithi. I went when she was in the middle of thodi varnam

I have mentioned the composition as swathi tirunAl (ST), I hope u did not mistake ST as sadguru thyagarAjA.

I expected a thiruppavai that day, shubha should have sung a thiruppavai which would have been very apt on that occassion, sudhdha dhaanyasi and Kalyani alapanas were good. Rajasri a new artist from trivandrum accompanied the vocalist very well, The mridangist Sivaraman , was very supportive throught the concert.

A mediocre to good concert'

oops - not sure whether this is correct. I was also present during the concert. She really sang well. While the taste may differ, Mr. Bharat's comments show contradictory views. This site is now becoming a controversial one by many counts.
