Though I may not live to see it; it is nice to speculate. Before the 1950's we used to speculate who will be elected by the Academy (but never gambled :) We knew for sure no woman will make it since we were pining to have MS/DKP recognized. I lost touch with the later 1970's group though none is a surprise. My biggest disappointment is the passing over of Manakkaal. Of course politics played a role in LGJ and MDR selections. Leaving them apart I speculate as follows.

The sure ones are

Sanjay
TMK
Sudha Raghunathan
Aruna sairam
Trichur Ramachandran
Maharajapuram Ramachandran
Guruvayoor Dorai
Mandolin Srinivas

The potentials are:

Neyveli Santhana gopalan
Vijay Siva
OST
MS Sheela

Keyboard Sathya
Rohan Krishnamurthy
...

Now instead of shooting me down have your own dream and I am sure most of you will live to realize it!

Sure ones - chitraveena ravikiran, sowmya, R.K.Sriram kumar, lalgudi siblings

Not sure whether trichur ramachandran will be part of this, i think, he is past his prime.

And sathya and rohan - they might get after 25 years, not in next 25 years..

Well, Lalgudi was offered the Kalanidhi and did not accept it. Is that also the story with MDR?

Why is Vijay Siva not as sure as Sanjay and TMK?!

Dorai mama should be given the next time percussion is awarded! Among the sure ones, I think A Kanyakumari is also in line.

It will be really nice if they gave it to a Suguna mami, Trivandrum Venkataraman, Parasalla Ponnammal, and other such people.

Why only singers?
How about
Veena - Jayanthi Kumaresh
Ghatam - Karthik
Mridangam - Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam, J.Vaidhyanathan, Sudeendhra , etc.
Violin - Embar Kannan, Amritha Murali
Many more talented people are there!

There is this number games that goes in Film circles & rankings in Sports, similiar to that is SK in CM. But, the former rankings do have a tangible monetary value associated with the ranking. In the golden age of CM (50's to late 70's) scope of CM was largely confined within the powerhouse of an institution called MA. Today, CM is so commercialized that one title cannot/will not be considered more important/significant.It will be nice-to-have not need to have.In top of that, SK bears the reputation of being tainted with lot of significant omissions & among the Gen X & Gen Y crowd, it wouldn't matter anymore. But, in virtual "tea kadai" conversations, SK will remain a hot favorite topic for some vambu avarthanam!!!!

How about TV Gopalakrishnan and T H Vinayakaram ji ? Karaikudi Mani is another big name as is Srimushanam Rajaraoji.

Will harikatha exponents like Vishaka Hari have any chance?

I am sure karikudi mani will refuse, like lalgudi. As far as i know, he is not after awards, and has refused many. Tiruchi sankaran will get into the list soon enough. Srikant h - Suguna Varadhachari / purushotam is also in my "list"... So is Rama Ravi. I am not sure other veterans you mention unfortunately many not get knowing how MA function, though i will be more than happy. I always wonder what is the criteria and how names are proposed

I doubt whether bhajani/harikatha however nicely done will ever qualify for SK!
The award to Embar indeed is an exception (?political)
SK is the recognitio of excellence in CM!

i m surprised at the following names not finding their place in the list of probables:

Hyderabad Brothers
Charumathi Ramachandran
V Kamalakar Rao
Nagai Muralidharan
M A Sundareswaran
S Varadarajan
Veenai Gaayathri
Shashank
Ganesh & Kumaresh
T Rukmani

(some ppl whom i can immediately think as possible candidates. m sure, there are many more.. )

cml sir, Embar was not the only harikatha exponent to get it. HMB himself was more of an harikatha artist than a concert singer. He had presided over first couple of conferences. R Ananthakrishna Sarma was a harikatha person as well.

OK, potential candidates in the next 25 years pretty much include anyone in the CM concert circuit. How about probables? 25 years is too long to predict it. May be the next 5 to 10 years would narrow down the scope a lot.

vk, next 5 years..

my list of potential/probables (going by the current trend of rotations...)

2009 - vocal - Trichur (has been waiting for a long time. and its time he gets it...)
2010 - percussion - Trichy Sankaran/Guruvayur Dorai
2011 - non percussion - VVS/Nagai
2012 - vocal - Rama Ravi/Suguna Purushottaman/Bombay Sisters
2013 - percussion - Trichy Sankaran/Guruvayur Dorai

any chances of danseuses being awarded? like in 1974? Or now that MA has a separate Dance conference, will they constitute a Natya Kalanidhi? Kumari Kamala is still around.

though i would love seeing Trivandrum Venkataraman and Parasalla Ponnammal in the list, i have gut feeling they will be given the Acharya only...

and if academy decides to award former Acharyas with Kalanidhi, first amongst them should be Kalpakam Swaminathan.

In the near future, I would well expect VVS (yes, he's still waiting, Srikant!), Suguna P, Trichy Sankaran, Trichur Ramachandran, and Guruvayur Dorai to be honoured. Bharath's list looks good.

Knowing Bharath, we can safely bet on at least 90% of the names in the list above! TVR looks pretty sure for this year. After that I would put my money on GD and VVS on account of their age/seniority. So I think we pretty much know what's coming for the next 3 years.

After that (2012 - vocalist) the field looks quite open. Bombay Sisters are my best bet. Suguna mami has been given the composer award - not sure if that is some sort of a disqualification (I believe the Acharya award is). Anyway, the last time the Academy honoured a non-jingli-box vocalist was Vedavalli mami in 1999(??) and TKG sometime before that. By 2012, Aruna Sairam, for example, would be pushing 60 and, therefore, may be a potential candidate.

I myself would be thrilled to see Rama Ravi/Suguna Purushottaman//Varadachari get the award but I have to say I would be (very pleasantly) surprised if they do.

Yes, Bharath's list looks plausible. But where he leaves "choices", I'd like GD and VVS. Though I haven't heard Trichy Sankaran in person.

This Kala Acharya thing is very shady. They should consider how celebrated one's disciples are when considering them for the Kala Acharya.

Did they give LGJ the Acharya at last?

They've got a lot apart from their age and seniority imho. :) (unless you're comparing with the other candidates)

But still ... Isn't VVS a shade younger than Nagai? I don't know Trichy Sankaran, but I guess he's older than GD too.

The only dancers who have received the SK were both equally adept at music - Sri Ponnayya Pillai and Smt. Balalsarasvati - so, it is hard to figure out why they were awarded the SK - for their music or their dance...

Not suggesting that they do not have any merit other than age - only that age is usually a factor when artistes of comparable merit are considered (although not always)...I did think GD and VVS are respectively older than Trichy and Nagai. Am not 100% sure though

vijay, 1999 was TK Govinda Rao and 2000 was R Vedavalli.

srikant, i think VVS is defly older than Nagai.

another glaring omission in all our Discussions is OS Thyagarajan. I m sure he is gonna get it sometime...

actually speaking, MA has not featured Manakkal in a while and has neither given him any award. will it be too late to give him an Acharya atleast. Kalanidhi well, he deserves one, but i m not sure if they would consider him.

@cmlover

Of course she's still available, except that she's already been given the Acharya. I doubt that anyone has been given the Acharya and the Kalanidhi, though if she gets it, Kalpakam mami will be a most deserving first. :)

pApanAsam sivan got it at 81 years, would be nice if manakkAl gets it at his 85+ years which he is right now. Somehow feel if musicians unite and all can just speak manakkAl can make it(all musicians talk high of his music, some musicians say no one can sing that high speed brighas like him ever again).

How about TV gopAlakrishnan, he knows to play close to 15 instruments, given both cm and hm concerts , kind of jack of all master of many personality.
