As far as I know, ranga vithala is Sripadaraya swamy's mudra.
Kanakadasa's mudra was AdineleyAdi kEshava.
I am not aware in which raga the song was originally created. I think I have heard this in Arabhi as well.
Sripadaraya is also known as Sripadaraja swamy and Sripadaraja muni.
His timeframe was 15th century. He had settled down in mulubagalu, near Kolar in Karnataka. He had also spent some time in hampi as a guru to the then vijayanagara ruler salva narasinga raya. During this time, it seems, he had developed a friendship with Annamacharya.
Sripadaraya is credited with creating many ugabhogas and suLadis (similar to padas, I guess) employing the ragas and talas that were in vogue in those days.
Sri vyasarajaru (or sri vyasa teertha) was the most recrgnized among his disciples, who eventually was the guru for Purandara dasa and Kanaka dasa.

SripAdarAya - 1404 AD - 1502 AD - could be considered as one of the most senior hari dAsa, and he is remembered first in the line.
Although it is very hard to say the original meTTu, I would think the tODi version could be an original tune, since it has stayed on from at least a 100 years.
I had earlier written about my speculation about him being the first to include a rAgamudre, and compose a rAgamAlike.

I think the name should be Shri Sripadarajaru. Sripada in ancient Kannada means a Sanyasi and Shri Sripadarajaru is considered by Maadhvas as the king among sanyasins. Similarly Vyaasaraajaru has the word raaja since he took over the kingdom for a day to save Krishnadevaraya. Just an FYI and feel free to correct me.
There is a melodious 'laali' krithi of Shri Sripadarajaru rendered by Rajkumar Bharathi in Raaga Nilambari. You can download it from Sangeethapriya.org

There is six minute rendition of Madhvanaama in Raaga Saranga rendered by Shri Vidyabhushana and it can be heard on KannadaAudio.com (a wonderful website for all Kannadigas - a must visit).

Beautiful song which I have Mrs Aruna Sayeeram render. The second charaNam reminds me of the first Sloka in SrIrangamAhAtmyam in pAdma/gAruDa purANam. I think it appears in both.
