CoolJi,
Full postal address and way to reach that place with landmarks. ( I had a horrific experience of not able to reach Mr.TNKrishnan concert at Saidapet few days back). Though I have no clue on HM ( Not that great in CM too :) ), I will come.

Having the Hindu newspaper delivered daily, I am ashamed not to know that TNK was playin in Saidapet a few days ago. Let me take a guess: Srinagar Colony? There is only one road to access the colony, from Taluk Office Road, just past the bus stand.

After a little practice, I am now able to find Mantra's home. It is a fine venue with wonderful hosts :)

Good news, Coolji!

Ram!
Congratulations! No wonder there were no posts from you. The duelling percussionists on the hilartity thread did not breathe a word about it.

Thanks Cool for bringing good tidings...

Thanks so much for the lovely wishes!

Count me in for the Sunday's concert. Can't resist getting pampered with Shyam & Coolji's hospitality.

Is it still on, Coolji? Even my wife is tempted by a HM concert --- although Sundays is a bad day for her (which makes it a good day for me!).

Rama Varma is singing Saturday night. I haven't had a two-concert weekend for a while :)

i think there is something wrong between me and mantra's place.
i m not sure if i can make it this sunday. we are having many guests at home and its already a planned weekend of outings and stuff.

i am still trying to work out something to eventually drop in for the concert.

no assurances, but i will sincerely try to come there...

I'm looking forward to meeting the suave Englishman, though I will recommend him to change his Indica for a Swift --- like I did!

ISTR there is a name on the gate, although I can't remember the name, "Chartered Accountant" --- Maybe that is Mantra himself! <Blush> and there is a nice stretch of wall, with no gates, opposite, where people may park.

Arasi, I have, this coming week, the opportunity not only to live it up a little, but to live a lot!

SVK Birthdayseries next week includes R Vedavalli and TNK in a 9-day series.

Coolji, having made it to two concerts at Shyam's place, would love to make it. But, am not sure, as this Sunday seemingly has other plans as far as other people at home goes. Shall try to drop in though, but not sure, sorry :(

That thought of resting with HM did go through my mind but this is the strangest flu I have had in my life and I don't want to be taking chances. Doc thought this was a simple viral fever and dished out his favourite medicines but my body didn't respond. Then I was banished to get tested for Typhoid, jaundice and it didn't turn out positive. He came back to his original hypothesis of a viral fever and prescribed a fresh set of medicines. Having taken it for the last couple of days, I don't think he has solved my case.

 ,
Will be there , I was kind of not sure till today evening as I had planned to go out of madras as it is holiday from friday to sunday. It got cancelled .

Who are the supporting artist for the concert. Just one request I would love the musician to center the concert around some lovely rAgas like darbAri ,miyAn ke malhAr , basant ,megh malhAr etc

In general I dont know how silly I am here , it is kind of always there in my mind for a long time .Cant we have a HM concert with a mridanga vidwan.I have heard one of the most memorable concert where UKS in a suryaprakAsh concert transformed mridangam to a tabla during 4 minute swara kalpana.

NandagOpal
Since you are the best person who understands with both CM and HM , can you prescribe here what would be the best that you recommend for a predominant CM crowd who is venturing to HM. kind of something that brings instant and sustained interest (Not everyone is born and brought up as  karni).

sbala, I do hope you recover soon. I'm sure that flu gets worse each year, and manifests in stranger ways each year (maybe that is just me getting old!) --- but I hope your doc thought of testing for malaria and the other nasties our mosquitoes carry. Get Well Soon!

Wow!
i m first wondering how cool would figure out where i would go each evening...

Yes! Let Coolji stop me at the door, and tell me that it is Rs.20!

(which reminds me... I seriously must make a contribution this time)

(and, as ever, my memory is the worst... I had quite forgotten the incident I think you're referring to. There's some old saying about Elephants never forgetting. They got it wrong. It's mridangists that never forget!!)

Enjoyed Rama Varma's concert, even though he sang (on request) English Note.

Maybe I should start requesting artists not to sing it!

Now I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

S.Rajam's take on English Note

"The English Note became the rage when Madurai Mani Iyer sang It with verve. It is another matter that today it has been done to death, it is my opinion that refraining from singing it would be an honour to Madurai Mani Iyers's memory.!"

RV sang it magnificently.

In fact I have heard, now, two good renderings of it this year, the other by SuryaPrakash.

I wanted to discuss its origins with John Marr in London; he would not even talk about it, merely saying that it had no musical merit whatsoever! Well, it is a catchy tune, and that is merit of a kind :). It is a carnatic treatment of music from a different culture, and I suspect there are not many of those (an early piece of Fusion music!) which is also merit of a kind.

A great experience.

Thanks to Cool, Mantra and, above all, the musicians.

I did see an HM concert in 2005, but it was not very good, so doesn't count, and makes it quite a while since the last one. It was worth waiting for!

As well as the music, her explanations were much appreciated and very useful. The interaction with the more knowledgeable audience members was good to see too.

It was a wonderful evening. Excellent music, interspersed with explanations about styles and nuances of HM and a lovely setting ideally suited for chamber music.

Had to rush immediately after the concert and couldn't meet some of the rasikas who were attending our concert series for the first time.

A big thanks to Mantra and his family and looking forward to the next concert (a Shyama Sastri special ??)

Usually I don’t allow others to disturb me of my afternoon siesta between 2 PM and 4 PM. Some of my friends will ring up and inform about some good programme and request me to listen to the programme during 2 PM and 4 PM.I would say yes to my friends but I don’t listen to them. When my friends call me back to enquire about the programme, 100% I would be saying to my friends that I couldn’t listen to the programme.

When Sri Coolji informed me about the HM at 4 PM, I had to take this news with a pinch of salt. But usually I always listen to Coolji.Hence I took the lunch earlier and advanced my siesta time to 1 PM AND 3 PM.

Hence I was at Mantra’s place by 3.45 PM.Coolji was happy that I have arrived in time.

After listening to the HM of Mrs.Shruthi Jauhari, I thanked myself for attending to the HM in time. Well, from now onwards I need not regret if I miss a concert of Parveen Sultana, but should not miss to attend to the concerts of Mrs.Shruthi Jauhari.

The wonderful and sweet voice, the nice introductions about the song and raga and the easy way of accepting the requests of the audience for new ragas (main culprit being myself) have endeared the audience to the artist.

Raag Madhuvanthy, Sudh kalyan, Durga, Dhani, Syam kalyan ( equivalent to the Yamuna kalyani raga), Miyaki Malhar, a Bhajan in Maund?, and finally a haunting Pahadi, well It was a heavy and tasty fare similar to the hospitality and serving of snacks by Sri Syam.

Unfortunately the recording done by me in my Sony digital recorder was lost since I have forgotten to save at the end of the concert.

Now I am eagerly waiting theuploads from Sri Coolji.

S.NAGESWARAN.
