I checked in the book and the lyrics are printed as I have posted but the notation has the word dayALA included. So it must be a typo. I have edited the post accordingly.

Also sometimes they repeat the pallavi with other words like meeLA at the end (instead of tALA).

And the second occurence of padakamalam should probably be split differently i.e.

pAda kamalam maravAda aDimai en ** pAdaga malam ** aghalAdA ...

Shri Sivan seems not to have minded using words disagreeable to our present day sensibilities...I am not sure we can take liberties with his original sAhityam, however good-intentioned we are. I can recall some more instances of 'unpleasant' sounding words e.g. one or two words in kANavENDAmO (Sriranjani) etc.

sridhar, You are right about wanting to keep the composer's words and their intent intact I was not trying to alter his words but only tried to guess the meaning of the line.
While I belong to the present times, I also belong to the times of Sivan!

arasi, if the discussion was about the word malam, here is my input which may interest you. malam only denotes bad qualites and not any other 'unpleasant' words. Ref to four words in the first pAsuram of tiruppANAzhvAr - amalan.....vimalan.....nimalan.....ninmalan.... to state SrImannArAyaNan is devoid of any durguNAs (bad qualities).

In fact the word 'kasmAlam' we usually hear in the 'chennai tamzih' is also nothing other than kashmalam meaning impure; I hear this word used when men change their pooNal during ceremonies-when they remove the old one, the priest says 'kashmla dhooshitam'.
