Here is my brand new poem on Bilahari!! It was requested by our own fellow member bilahari!! Sorry for the repeated references to Thyagarajar in this poem but I just couldn't get my mind off him!! Please tell me your feedback!!

BILAHARI for BRAVERY

The proud daughter of Saint Thyagaraja’s favourite[1],
You are a personification of bravery[2], but petite,
An invocation of happiness if we sing you,
Youngsters find solace in "Raravenu"

Rajesh,
pIlA, a modern tamizh word? In tele-tamizh or cini-tamizh. Well, tirait tamizh? Haven't come across that word except in vaDa mozhi. pIla=yellow.
Closest tamizh word: pIzhai (tunbam), unhappiness. bArati uses it: peNNenRu bUmitanil piRandu viTTAl migap pIzhai irukkudaDi...

Excellent, srinivas! Thank you very much! It was very educative as well. How are Deshakshi and Bilahari related exactly? And thanks for including MDR in it as well (though I've not heard his bilahari thillana). Thygaraja of course has fleshed out the ragam so much.

Excellent poem!!

A suggestion - when you compose poems on the mELakartA rAgams can you add the rAga-dEvatA paintings of Sri S. Rajam to enhance the appeal?

bilhari, Deshakshi has the same swarams as bilahari except in the avaroham it has the Kaisaki (lower) nishadam.

srinivasrgn, very nice indeed! Varied nuggets about a raga nicely woven together in a tapestry!

Nice one!

But isn't 'narasimha Agaccha' a composition of MD?

Deshakshi is an allied raga of Bilahari. This is the generally spoken idea. Some say, it is the hindustani equivalent of Bilahari. There are not many recordings of Deshakshi available to us. But I have heard some vidhwans like Sri M Balamuralikrishna render kritis. Some say Deshakshi has phrases that are different from Bilahari. The kritis that I know of in Deshakshi are "Saraseeruha nabhamudaaram" by Swati tirunal and Oothukkadu's Navavarnam "Santhatham Aham Seve". If any of you have recordings, please upload so that we can discuss further.

MDR's thillana can also be uploaded, if anybody has it.

Thanks to all for commenting!

Narasimha Aagacha is indeed a composition of Dikshithar. But it is in Mohanam.
The Narasimha I was referring to is "Narasimha Nannu Brovave" of Thyagarajar. It is in Bilahari.

Good poem, srinivasrgvn. As Punarvasu said, it is educative as well.

One enhacement would be to work in the characteristic prayogas and the jeeva and nyasa swaras of the raga. You have already mentioned the Jantai prayogas. Going by the general structure of your approach, you can work them in like this: ( just a suggestion for content, not meant to add to the poem itself! )

Some people opine G P D S N D P bring you up clean and clear
others say "......" for the same, but Oh, great Bilahari, you
show you are full of life in 'R N and D' while you take a rest at 'P and R'.

Great poems - in years to come they may stand along side the ancient lakshnana geetams that convey musical details about ragas.

srinivasrgvn- Nice second poem.
Could u add few more lines to include MD's great compositions "kAmakshi sri varalakshmi" & "Sri Balasubramanya" in bilahari. "bilahari" raga name has been intelligently woven in the first song.
