Michael Jackson was certainly a cultural icon.

A musical icon? I don't think so.

Commiserations to those that loved him.

Condolences. He was quite young (around 50), and had much more to offer. Agreed he was a bit weird, but then he went thru a traumatic childhood. Plus too much money and fame earned in a short time can do this to some people.

Interesting quote - http://www.rediff.com/news/2007/jun/17music.htm
"If I can enjoy Michael Jackson and pop singers why shouldn't fans of pop music simply enjoy Carnatic music," Jayshree said. "We often begin our workshops with the music of today and then take participants back to ragas and the roots of classical music."

Jakson, a product of disciplinarian dad, inspite of his anger to his DAD, he became an icon among people born in the 70s

Audacious! My kudos to Bombay Jayashree for thinking this way and acting on it. May her tribe abound.

The late Shri Rajam Iyer once said, flashing his thousand-watt smile, 'we want to be "vidyArthi"s (students) all our lives. That is the greatest pleasure of all.'

Rajam Iyer said it, but we have our own vidyaarthi (guru) NSG on the forum!

What a mess of a life and of magnificent fame it was for Jackson! It was his dancing which was amazing. If Mick Jagger was elastic, Jackson had elegance too. When Tiny Tim's falsetto voice was a passing fancy for pop fans, Jackson, the man with a sequined glove reached th heights of fame. Yes, a showbiz tragedy in a way, but an icon all the same...

The costliest video that I had to buy was his bad album, especially that particular song Smooth Criminal was such a rage in school and college culturals that you see every one dancing for the same. May his soul RIP and as he heals the world with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W61Q-EZ8R7M , To a great extent he is one of the best pop singers with a very high shruthi suddham.

Once again, I wrote without brain engaged.

Of course he was a musical icon.

Not in the least relevant that it wasn't my sort of music.

By the way, in case any BBC-Radio-4 fans (going back a decade or three) happen to be around, I was very sad to hear of the death of Steve Race

Really a sad end.
Only in yesterday's news I got to watch some of his performances as a kid and it took me back in time, a time when we all loved to listen to those songs-my own memories.

My first 'conscious' experiences of musical enjoyment came from Michael Jackson. The fact that his music is still relevant today, still emulated by artists worldwide, is a testament to his longevity and his entitlement to the label of 'musical icon'. Just listen to the opening sequences of Billy Jean, Beat It, and Thriller - they speak one name and one name only, revolutionary in their impact on popular music. He seemed to be a shy child genius trapped by early fame in a grown man's body. Let us try to not speak of his demons, at least for the moment. RIP MJ.

Well, MJ's music was very special because he included so many social themes in his songs - racial discrimination("black or white") and "Heal the World". Also, an Indian kathak dancer danced for a snippet in his 'black or white' song. Western musicians always found India fascinating.

Suggest that you listen to Bob Dylan!

Many, many musicians and composers have been motivated by social situations, and music has been very much a part of social change.

He is a greatest of the pop singer we have seen.

Lots of people talk about "performance" (not about singing ) . And the only one who excelled in it is MJ as early as 80s. Sometime the movements were erotic but leaving that he performed a dance of his own and created a style in dance and singing. I wonder whether he also (musical) directs his own albums?

I remember watching Airtel Supersinger finale recently and a performance by a lady play back singer with very minimal clothing. MJ never translated performance to cloth removal, he always danced excellently and the dance looks out of the world. I hope all those new breed of singers learn few lessons from MJ. And MJ is dream icon for those who like music and dance.

His personal life was difficult. no comments.

If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same...
Very true, and I'm not at all trying to tell people who they should, or should not, love.
