I was thinking of tying in the clip with the topic as well as the performer. More like the keywords we have in scientific circles. Once we have a number of clips we should be able to search using the acronym to find the relevant piece. I am not too clear in words but my thought process may be clear!

Thanks EVERYBODY, esp. Sri Kulkarni, for responding to my request and uploading non-standard Varnams. But, I see no discussions....
Kalgada, do you if anyone sings now or any in the old school that used to sing the Ahiri Varnam - it is a beautiful ragam? And, where can I get the notation? Thank you,
Chithra

Hi Chitra,
I saw this varnam in Gana Kala Bodhini a year ago and i remember that it is written as a janya of Vakulabharanam
without any anya swarams....and it was composed by
Sri Talangambadi Panchanadayyar...but i never heard anyone singing...
I also heard of a varnam in Huseni which i was told,
is beautiful...but don't know who sang....
All these Adi Tala Varnams are called TAna varnams
because they educate people as to how to sing TAnam
for a particular Ragam...that's why people ask to sing
Varnams as crisply as possible and not sing as a PAdam
where you have much of an expression for the lyrics and
Music...
Kulkarni Sir can expose us to some more rare varnams...
Parvati.

Hi Chitra,
iam always available for carnatic music discussions..
Gana Kala Bodhini is a book for those appearing for Diploma in
Carnatic Music in Chennai and the book i have,is in Telugu..since iam from Andhra,i followed that book...but iam not sure if that's written in Tamil too?
I really wonder why not many people sing Ahiri inspite of
the availability of many compositions in that raga and
esp.a major contribution from Trinity....
Hopefully,Kulkarni Sir will show us some glimpses of Ahiri
some point of time...
Parvati.

I found this when I was browsing through my cds.
Dr SRJ has rendered the varnam valachi vacchi in hindola vasantham. I guess its a rare one. I haven't heard of any one rendering it. I think somebody was asking for it.

Lakshman Sir,
Isn't this a composition of Ramaswami Dikshitar. I couldn't locate this on the varnams. (http://www.geocities.com/promiserani2/varnams.html
Thank you.

Prof SRJ is one of the finest teachers of CM alive at present. No wonder he is bringing back to life some of our rare (and lost) varNams. Now let me share a secret with you guys. You will be seeing soon more of his monumental research in CM at this forum. I am also inviting his innumerable shishyas here at NA as well as elsewhere to share their memories with this living legend on this forum. Now just hold your breath

Here is a link to a folder (varnams) in the xdrive which has a few rare varnams rendered by Prof.SRJ. Vocal support is by his disciple, T.Lokanatha Sarma. Accompanists are Sri. Easwaran and Smt. T.Rukmini. These varnams are from the video "Varnam through the Ages" recorded under the auspices of "Saraswati Vaggeyakara Trust".

Rohin and I had the immense privilege of accompanying SRJ Mama during that Toronto lec-dem on saint tyAgarAjA. Mama ended the presentation with kRSNasvAmi bhAgavatar's slOka in praise of tyAgarAja, set in suraTi rAgam, leaving much of the audience applauding while in tears - an unforgettable experience.

The varnams link on xdrive should show you a folder named
'varnams'. The link for the 6 compositions (my second post) should show you a folder named 'kalyani'.
I just checked the links in my previous posts by clicking on them and creating a dummy account for myself in xdrive. I can see both the folders. Hope you can access them.

One link should show a folder 'varnams' (3 varnams). The second link should reveal a folder named 'kalyani' and that has the 6 compositions, including gAravamu. I just checked it when I replied to rshankar's post. I am new to xdrive, I hope I am not messing up. Could you please check again and let me know? Thanks!

Davalangi: What a way to begin your membership in this forum - thanks for offering these treasures by SRJ. Welcome to the forum!
Krishna, thanks for the Hindola Vasantham Varnam - one of the few varnams in Roopaka Thaalam.
Apart from the Varali Chathusra Ata thaal varnam has anyone heard any of these Varnams being sung by other artists?
Are any MDR / SRJ renditions of Tiger's varnams available? Tiger had composed varnams in Vachaspathy (Khanda Ata) and Janaranjani; there are more, I believe - perhaps, Ashwin / Davalangi / Sri Lakshman will tell us.
Would anyone have the Poornachandrika Varnam, by PSI, in Khanda Ata; and , the Yadukula Kambhoji Pada varnam by Vadivelu (of the Thanjavur Quartette) - I mean the audio, of course.
Sri Lakshman Sir, my email is <chithra.te@gmail.com>. Thanks for offering to send me the notation of the Ahiri varnam - I truly appreciate it. Would you tell me your source for lyrics you have given above, as well as the Ahiri Varnam, so I may procure it the next time I am in India?
Mikka Nandri to all.

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum - I'd be very happy to contribute in any way that I can. With regards to Tiger's compositions, there are also varnams in SrI ranjani and maNirangu. There is a famous recording of MDR singing the former, which I must have somewhere, and I will try to extract a recording of SRJ Mama singing the maNirangu varnam from one of our lessons. Recently SRJ mama gave a workshop in Chennai under the auspices of IFCM in which he took up about six rare varnams, including subbarAma dIkShitar's cauka varnam in suraTi, this maNirangu varnam, and the sahAna aTa tAla varnam, "evarEmi". I believe notations for each were also provided to the attendees.

Chithra - I will upload both the Janaranjani & Vacaspati varnams of Tiger (both SRJ renditions) sometime next week once I can clear space on my xdrive. Or maybe I should send them to Meena so that she can u/l to the forum's xdrive. As Ashwin pointed out, SRJ has also sung the Manirangu varnam (Cleveland 2004). I will u/l the suraTi couka varnam and Patnam's aTa tAla varnam in sahAna when I get a chance.
I might actually have SRJ singing the yadhukula kambhoji pada varnam in the "varnam through the ages" video. I will check into this!
I also provided a link to his lecdem at the Music Academy on "ragas exclusive to SSP". Please d/l that when you get a chance.

Hi MeenaAshwin welcome!
Thanks for sharing with us. I'll be glad to u/l the varnams on our forum xdrive.
On ur/rohin website when i try to access sree SRJ
audio link- 72 melakarta ragas, i get an error message.
This web site hasnt been updated since my early undergrad days, and the files must have been deleted at some point. I'll see if I can find it and upload it as well...
BTW, the photograph you see on that page is Mama at Musiri Chambers in 1998. He sang a few Musiri favourites like tiruvaDi SaraNam, nIrajAkShi kAmAkShi, etc. but also sang aparAdhamulanniyu manninci preceded by a beautiful latAngi AlApanA, which I have since come to regard as the gold standard for latAngi , beginning in the style of TigervAL. I actually have a recording of this concert - unfortunately it was done with a very old recorder and so there is a lot of noise - but if you have either very good speakers or a nice pair of headphones, you can make out quite a bit. Here's a link to Mama's latAngi AlApana from that concert:

all other uploads of lecdems have been put on hold by me.they all can wait.
(the last one was rajams talk on koteeswara iyer.hopefully it will be discussed over the next week.)
you can then start at the rate of one chakra at a time ( wonder how many people are out there like me who want to ask WHAT IS A CHAKRA ?)
YOU CAN SEND IT TO MEENA BY YOUSENDIT.COM
For 20 years I lived with only one isai vizha excerpt of SRJ- a lovely charukesi in that-
and now ....
There is hope for kansens like me after all.

Davalangi, Ashwin:
Thanks for offering to share MDR, SRJ's renditions of Tiger's varnams. I look forward to them. I also have heard the Sahana varnam by SRJ - it is magificent, and would make a great addition to our Varnam archive.
Yes, I d/l the SSP Ragam items - will hear them over the weekend. In this connection, have you heard his Ekaika Ragam Tape?
Davalangi, a couple of years back SRJ's son was selling the Melaragamalika CDs by SRJ - is it appropriate to host them here? He had made the CDs from the video. Sorry to pour cold water - but I believe we should discuss this matter.

As you all know, a mELakarta will have the same 7 swaras in both ascent and descent in the c0rrect order(SRGMPDN and back). rAgas consist of a pUrvAnga (SRGM) and a uttarAnga(PDNS). S and P are constant notes and will not change.
As mentioned, the 72 mELakartas are divide into 12 cakras with 6 rAgas each. First let us divide these into equal halves of 36. The frist and the second halves are in a way, mirror images of each othe. Te first 36 contain M1 or Suddha madhyama. The 2nd have the M2 or pratimadhyama.
The way the rAgas progress is very methodical. Within each cakra, the pUrvAnga is same for all the 6 rAgas. Hence the only changes are in the uttarAnga. As S and P are unique and unchangeable, the changes occur only in D and N. Both these swaras have 3 variants. D1, D2, D3 and N1, N2, N3. Of these D2 = N1 are same as also N2 = D3. Therefore they cannot coexist in the same rAga. Also N must always have a higher frequency value than D in a rAga. Hence we cannot have a rAga withD3,N1 as that is against the rule and also will be the same as D2,N2. This leaves us with only 6 possible combinations that give rise to 6 mELas in a cakra. The way they progress is of fixed order
1st mELa of any cakra will have both Suddha swaras- D1,N1. Next we have D1, N2. Then D1, N3. Fourth D2,N2 (remember D2=N1), Fifth D2,N3 and lastly D3,N3. The same pattern repeats in eac cakra.
Now coming to the change from one cakra to the next;-
the variation is in the pUrvAnga only. Here again as we know which madhyama is present and S is constant, changes occur only in R and G. Again they admit of 3 variants wherein R2=G1 and G2=R3 and cannot coexist. Also G must be higher in frequency than R in a rAga. Therefore we have the 6 cakras progressing thus 1st R1,G1; 2nd R1,G2; 3rd R1,G3; 4th R2,G2; 5th R2G3 and lastly R3,G3. The same pattern repeats in the pratimadhyama half with only M being different.
Hence, for instance, the first mELa of each of the 1st 6 cakras is identical with respect to uttarAnga but vary in pUrvAnga. Whereas within a cakra, pUrvAnga is constant while uttarAnga differs.

Super DRS:
Could you kindly open a new thread called 'explanation of musical jargon' and post these descriptive explanations for the benefit of our readership. If it is done in the middle of these threads it will get buried and lost. These ongoing explanations will be always useful and educational for all threads and permit a finer understanding of subtle points in CM. Also our laya specialists may also add explanations therein on moot points of taaLaM.
Thank you and regards
