come aahiri, the most popular piece is maayamma of shyama sastri. A very beautiful kriti.

the kamalamba navavarnam by itself is an magnum opus.

Adaya srI raghuvara and tsallarE rAmachandruni being the two tyagaraja kritis that are heard occasionally in concerts. Again really beautiful pieces.

ponnaiah pillai's dInaraksha is another nice one.

coming to definitions of the ragam, the ragam is said to have been a janya of the 21st melakartha in many music references, viz., Ragamanjari, Ragamala, Sangeethasudha, Ragatattvavibhodha and quite a few other books. SSP and Raga Lakshana by Muddu Venkatamakin places this ragam as bhashanga janya of the 20th mela. While, Sangraha Chudamani and Swara Mela Kalanidhi place it under the 8th mELam. This ragam is considered as the 8th melam amongst the 19 poorva melams.

The ragam is suppose to have shadja as the nyasa, amsa and graha svaram. it is fit to be sung in the evenings and in the night.

Kum. D Vardhani is from Vizianagaram, AP and a disciple of Sri. P.V.S. Seshiah Sastry garu, who is now the principal of Vizianagaram Music College. He is a disciple of Sri. Susarla Sivaram.

Kulkarni sa'ab,
Who is the singer in this track: Brinda? or is it Jayam? When I saw the name of the track, I assumed that Sri Viswanathan would be singing for his sister. (I had the opportunity to listen to him live ~10 years ago: amazing experience - although it was billed as a concert, he ended up making it into an absolutely divine 4.5 hours long lec-dem - he said that he'd been a teacher for so long that even if you took him out of the classroom, you could not take the teacher out of him! That was when I realized that he was a fantastic singer as well!).

I checked with Vedavalli Amma through one of her students Smt. Sumathi. The Ahiri varnam is not in Amma's repertoire, but she did mention that there is a lovely varnnam by the same composer in suruTTi.

Its amazing how Dikshithar chose Ahiri for the most divine last navavarna song. It perfectly suits the divinity and the involvement of ashta-vibakthi in that song. Amazing stuff. I still feel as if I had a darshan of AMMA everytime when I sing or play or listen to this song. Is there an ata tala varnam in Ahiri? I might be crazy but somehow I feel there must be one.

rAgAnubhava - nIlAmbari and Ahiri by P P Narayanaswami
[quote]Ahiri

Definition (ve.nkaTamakhin)

AhirI sA tu saMpUrNA

Sa grahA shrOtra ra~njanI |

gitOkta mELa maRgENa

bANa yAmE pragIyatE ||

(ve.nkaTamakhin – caturdaNDi prakAshika – anubandham 20-10)

Ahiri is usualy considered a janyam of mElam 8, hanumatODi (but opinions differ, and it can be placed under 14, vakuLAbharaNam, 17 sUryakAntam, or 20 naTabhairavi – see remarks below).

ArOhanam: sa ri sa ga ma pa dha ni Sa (S R1 S G3 M1 P D1 N2 S)

AvarOhaNam: Sa ni dha pa ma ga ri sa (S N2 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S))

The svarams featured are (mELam 8): SaDjam, shuddha riSabham, sAdhArana gAndhAram, shuddha madhyamam, pa~ncamam, shuddha dhaivatam, and kaishiki niSAdham. Since antara gAndhAram, and kakaLi niSAdham appears in several places, Ahiri becomes a bhASA.nga rAgam. It is an Arohana vakra sampUrNa rAgam.

The jIva svarams are ga, dha, and ni.

The chAya svarams are ri, ma, and ni.

The svarams shudda ri and ga are kampita svarams.

Ahiri is a gamaka vArikA rakti rAgam.

A tristAyI rAgam exhibiting a number of subtle shrutis in kaRNATik music.

It is therefore featured in k.rtis, operas, dramas and various dance forms.

The ga in Ahiri is very delicate. The well pronounced antara ga occurs very rarely. In most places it slips own to the sAdharaNa ga level. Even the catushruti dha occurs strikingly in phrases like “p{d}nSnddnDp.

A scholarly ragam that can be properly rendered only with suitable lakSya j~nAnam

Ahiri is a very early morning rAgam (ve.nkaTamakhin says bANa kAlam, which is second yAmam after evening/night). It portrays shOka and karuNa rasam (pathos, and compassion).

In Tamil paNN music, Ahiri is known by the name pa~ncamam.

Ahiri belongs to the 19 pUrva prasiddha mElams declared by “pUrva AcAryasâ€

Over time the antara gAndhAram (G3) has become more prominent in Ahiri than sAdhAraNa gAndhAram (G2), to the point where I have to look very closely for the occasional sign of a G2.

Listen to Brindamma's rendition of A daya SrI raghu vs the Alathoor brothers - the usage of G2 is nearly 100% everywhere giving a tODi like flavour.

tsallarE rAmchandruni - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9ZNbqp1kHQ
A daya SrI raghu - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9ZNbqp1kHQ - This is the Alathur Brothers' recording.

I can't find the Brindamma recording on youtube, but it's in Sangeethapriya. Look for it.

You can listen to DKJ sing the 9th navAvarNam here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?annotatio ... kU#t=34m2s - official Youtube channel of a commercial album.
