Chithra - There should be no copyright issues involved with sharing the melaragamalika audio CDs. Initially the intent of selling the CDs was to recover material/time costs and also use the funds to make more such rare recordings. The amount charged was also nominal - $15 for 2 mp3 CDs (~ 9 hrs). We haven't sold any copies in a while now. I guess it is being a bit unfair to the people who have already bought it....but hopefully a bigger audience can be reached in a forum like this, the main goal now being to distribute the 'wealth' :)

Here is a link to Subbarama Dikshitar's SuraTi varnam (also in rUpakam). SRJ is supported by Ashwin & Rohin Iyer, Sri.Easwaran on the mridangam and Sri.Chandramouli on the violin.

Dear davalangi
it is wonderful to make available Prof SRJ's lectures and demonstarions for the benefit of the CM community. As far as my limited knowledge goes he is the greatest living authority on classical CM and it is imperative that we capture and preserve his thoughts and lectures for posterity. From a historical perspective may I request you (Ashwin too!) to chronicle the background of these materials (i.e., when where how and why). It will be of great academic interest to a future CM historian.

Thank you!

As a follow-up to the suraTi varNam, here is SRJ talking about suraTi rAgam (using the same varNam as an illustrative example) in one of his lecdems on "Role of gamakas".

davalangi: thanks for the varNams

Lakshmanji: few corrections (queries)

1. inta calamu - kAmbhOji varNam

P: inta calamu jEsEya idi meragAdurA
A: kAntuDaina shrI tuLajEndra kanuDI (saradaya) bhOjEndra
C: cinnanATi modalukoni

SRJ sings somewhere close to these. pl. correct me.

2. vanajAkSa - varALi varNam:
in anupallavi the first word is 'manasunci' not 'manasukE'

3. nenarunci yElukOrA - biLahari varNam

P: nenarunci yElukOrA ninnE namminadanarA
C: cinnanATi modalu cittamu (rAnaduvEla mEna)
minnagA sAmantula meppincaga lEdO

PS: i doubt those in paranthesis

Davalangi and Ashwin,
Thankyou for sharing those wonderful varnams and excerpts.

>>all other uploads of lecdems have been put on hold by me.they all can wait.
(the last one was rajams talk on koteeswara iyer.hopefully it will be discussed over the next week.) <<

Dear Mr.Kulkarni,
Seemed to have missed that lec-dem by S.Rajam on Koteeswara Iyer. Is it still accessible? Can you direct me to its location?

Thank you so much!

--------------
Oops! Mr.Kulkarni - I got the lec-dem.....did not read the post in the other thread earlier.

Sorry!!!

Davalangi:

Glad to know that there are no copyright concerns - great idea to spread SRJ's incredible erudition. He is a witty speaker too - his lec dems are educational and entertaining. Hope we get to hear them here. As CML points out we must record, preserve and share the scholarship of such musicians for ourselves and for posterity. Has that not always been India's weak point - lack of recorded / written history, and an absence of concern for the same?

Thanks much for sharing MDR's rendition of the Sri Ranjani Varnam. Downloaded it this evening, and I am enjoying it as I write. The sound is so clear - who are the accompanists, and when and where did the concert take place? Any chance of sharing the concert?

BTW, this Sri Ranjani remimds me of MDR's rendition of Thyagaraja Swamy's Brocheva - he renders it with an unique and distinctively-MDR flair.

btw. he has composed a kriti in rAgA SrIranjani -vighna rAja vinutara.

Meena, whom are you referring to - MDR / Tiger? If you have it, any chance of your sharing? The only krithi composed by MDr that I know of is Saagara Sayana Vibho - beautiful Bagesree. I love to hear KVN' rendition.

Thank for the info - much appreciated

Dear Chitra,
MDR has composed around 300 compositions. It was almost lost.....it was lying in the dust somewhere in some organisation and recently was unearthed due to the persistent efforts of his son and some other individuals.

He has written them in some 12 books or something...cant recall exactly. The most popular is Sagara Shayana - Bageshri.

He has rendered some in his concerts. A few you may recognise :

1. Harium haranum - Attana
2. Rama Rama - Neelambari
3. Gajavadana - Hamsadhwani
4. Mayamma - Ranjani
5. Thyagaraja gurum - Kedaram
6. Manasa sri ramuni - Bowli
7. Nanda gopa - Kaapi
8. Kaapi thillana

and Sagara Shayana, of course!

I'll send you some links to articles abt his compositions.

Regards,
Ramya.

Chitra and Meena :
Here is an article published sometime ago abt the MDR manuscripts. The songs are so beautiful......its a miracle that those books were recovered and we are very lucky that they were not lost.

http://carnatica.net/nvr/mdr-editorial.htm

Also, another list of his compositions :
http://www.carnatica.net/lyrics/mdr-kritis.htm

His mudra is "Varadadasa" referring to his guru, of course.....dasa of his guru "varada"!

Such a great man!! I too, can go on and on!!! :-)

Thanks, Ramya, for the wealth of info on MDR. Yes, I recognise the ones you have listed in the first post. I tend to concentrate so much on the music, I often lose sight of the lyrics; even if the lyrics are in the language I understand I tend not to pay attention because of the music (I do not blame the music, only myself - am like instrumentalists in this regard). So, I never noticed his mudra of Varada dasa in those comps. of MDR.

Divakar:

here are the lyrics for Vachaspathy - I have written down what I have in my music notation (did not get the lyrics separately). I most probably have murdered it, but someone else will fix it, I am sure:

Pallavi: Vandanamu O Narinchiti (or onarinchiti) vela kola;
Sashtaangam Bhooma Bharatha Lakshmi Vani nin

Anupallavi:
Mandhara dara poora arivirim chathulu thoshitha charithe
Mara Vasantha modhini Sri Rukminiki chirayu nosagumo

Charanam:
Anthamuna Kalkshethra AdhyakshiNi SuposhiNi

chithra: thanks for the text.

ok. this is how it has to be (in transliteration scheme)

P: vaNdanamonariNciti vElakoladi
sAshTANgammu mA bharata lakshmi vANi kin

A: maNdAra dhara pUra arivirim catulu tOshita caritE
mAra vasaNta mOdini SrI rukmiNiki cirAyu nosagumu

C: aNtamuna kalAkshEtra adhyakshiNi supOshiNi

vaNdanamonariNciti = vaNdanamu + onariNciti (is a single word)
vElakoladi = thousands of
( veyyi, vEla = thousand; kola = measure )

last word in pallavi is 'kin' which is formation of 'ki' meaning 'to'

Thanks Meena! I wasn't aware that he had rendered that many of his songs, in his concerts. I should lookout for them!

Do you have a recording of any of those songs, other than the often heard ones (eg. other than Gajavadana, Saagara shayana, Harium haranum, Thyagaraja, Mayamma and the Kapi thillana) that you can upload for us? Does anyone?

Thanks!

the post on mdrs compositions has made me have a relook at his renderings in his concerts and AIR broadcasts.
just listened to mangalacharane -incidentally this is not listed above, but has the varada dasar mudra-and i thought it is worth picking up as many renderings as possible..
i have opened a folder on x drive called mdrs compositions and will be starting a thread.if mangalacharane was any benchmark, it is going to be a wonderful experience.

regarding the lyrics of vacaspati varNam of TIGER.
i posted in the previous page.. but there was a small error
got it corrected on listening to MDR version

vaNdanamu - vachaspati varNam - ATa tALam - TIGER

P: vaNdanamonariNciti vElakoladi
sAshTANgammu mA bhArata lakshmi vANi kin

A: maNdAra dhara pUra arivirim catulu tOshita caritE
mA vara vasaNta mOdini Sri rukmiNiki cirAyu nosagumu

C: aNtamuna kalAkshEtra adhyakshiNi supOshiNi

the change is at the beginning of second line of anupallavi..
it is not (mAra vasaNta) but (mA vara vasaNta)
rest is same.
again corrections, if any, are welcome

Should it not be BArathI (= saraswathI/vANI) and not BAratha in the second line of the pallavI? If I remember correctly, the composer was asking for vANI and lakshmI to continue to shower their blessings on the amazing Rukmini Devi.

rshankar: you may be right. but both (SRJ, MDR) sing as 'bhArata lakshmi vANi kin'
not sure if it should be 'bhArati' or 'bhArata'
those who learnt this varNam should be in a better position to tell/clarify to us.

that kriti 'mangaLa caraNE - hindOLam' was completed and corrected with the expert help of Subramanianji.
i feel this is appropriate place to thank him for his patience in 'filling the gaps' and also correcting mistakes

you could post the meaning of the kriti for the benefit of rasikas in the 'mdr's compositions' thread in 'composers'. i already posted the same kriti in that thread.

Finally, I sat down and listened to the varnams uploaded by Davalangi and others.

gAravamu ganna (varNa), rAgAmAlikA, is simply superb - every ragam is sung in the inimitable SRJ style, and Ashwin and Rohan do their teacher pround indeed! Evaremi, in Sahana, is another stellar piece. Avidly listened to every one of them, and feel desperately for the lack of time in learning them all. Davalangi, thank you so much for sharing these gems.

Who has sung Arabhi - started playing it thinking it was being sung be Tiger, and could not believe my ears when the higher sruthy came out of the speakers.

The two Sriranjani varNas, both by MDR, seem to mine ears to be from very different periods - would the uploaders clarify, please?

A request:

Does anyone have a vocal rendering of the Ghanaraga malika Varnam, Inthakopam, by kALahasthy Venkatasamy Raja, in Adi, and The Ata thaala varNam in Poornachandrika - the latter has the grammer of Poornachandrika codified in it? Would you please share here? Many thanks.

BTW, did anyone bother to check out teh Sunadha Vinodhini Varnam sung by Shobah Sekar - it is very well done.

I do have the Sukhanubhava CDs from Carnatica. She was a disciple of Sattur Subramaniam and was also related to VV Satagopan. I have heard her inperson and on the Radio several occassions in the 40's and 50's. She withdrew for health reasons and as I understand is still living in Chennai. It is a great loss for CM

Your listing does not cross with the commercial one. Please let us have that concert. All the songs are tempting and I am sure they were recorded when she was in her prime. In those days she was ranked better than MS for classicism. What a pity fate dealt her a bad hand

Again if you do have any concert of VVS it will be a divine treat!

Thanks

I have posted this info in a seaparate thread, but in case it got overlooked..

I recall reading a few months back re: release of commercial audio tapes of Sri V. V. Sadagopan. If anyone knows anything about that would they please post that info here? Many thanks.

The elders in my family say that NCV also offered MSS great deal of competetion, and may have eclipsed MS had she lived. A lot of old stories that are burned in the memories of the older generation, and definitely buried in the newspaper morgues.
