For each tala in the usual 7, there are 5 varieties corresponding to five jathis - thus 7*5 = 35. For example, instead of just the one catusra rUpaka that is in the standard 7, you would have tiSra/catuSra/khaNDa/miSra/sankIrna rUpaka. Similarly for eka, triputa, jhampa, ata, dhruva and matya. I dont know the specific patterns for the 35.

It all comes down to the "7 satha thala's", which are the 7 thalams (not including chapu thalams) commonly in use.

These are Thriputa, Eka, Jhampa, Ata, Rupaka, Matya, and Dhruva thalam.

One should first know that these thalams are composed of 3 parts, Dhrithum, anudhrithum, and laghu. Dhrithum is a clap followed by a "backwards clap" meaning you're palm should be faced up. An anudhrithum is merely a clap, and laghu is a clap followed by countings with the finger.

Let us take the common Adi thalam as an example, the correct name of this is "Chathusra Jathi thriputa thalam", because thriputa thalam is identified by a laghu, and 2 dhrithums. The dhrithums will always stay constant in the thalam, however the laghu can change into 5 different ways (thisra-3, chathusra-4, kanda-5 mishra-7 and sankirna 9) and these are called "jaathi".

So as said above adi thalam is "Chathusra jaathi thriputa thalam", if you count, it goes *clap* (1) pinkey finger (2) ring finger (3) middle finger (4), followed by 2 dhrithums. If you do thisra Jaathi thriputa thalam it will simply be *clap* (1) pinkey (2) middle (3) and two dhrithums - a seven beat cycle. And if you do a kanda jaathi, you do the same thing however you go down to your inxex/pointer finger for the laghu to be five.

This gives 5 different possibilities for thriputa thalam alone, and you can do the exact same thing with the other 6 thalams (as arunk sir has said), therefor just do 7*5 which equals 35.

Don't get this confused with chapu thalams however, because those are a different class of thalams all together even though they are used quite often.

Now if you look up the 7 different thalams and how they are performed, you may see some symbols resembling l O and U.

The l represents laghu (but not the jaathi of the laghu), the O represents dhrithum, and the U represents anudhrithum.

So thriputa thalam will be "l O O"

Eka would be simply and "l"

and Jampa would be "l U O"

Why don't you try Prof Sambamoorthy's introductory books in CM? They have a set of 35.
