The concert was organised as part of Music Marvel by Balaganamrudam at Raga Sudha hall on 7th October 2009. Smt.Vasudha trained by her aunt and later under Shri.P.S.Narayanaswamy provided a classical fare for a packed Raga Sudha Audience who were given real aural treat by the vidushi.

The song list :

1) Arunodayame-Bowli-Adi-Varnam-LGJ
2) Gajamukhane Sidhi vinayakane-Nata-Khandachapu-Vyasaraya
3) Sri Parthasarathina-Shudha Danyasi-Rupakam
4) Gangeya vasana-Hamirkalyani-Adi
5) Iti samayamu-Natakapriya-Rupakam
6) Parakelanannu-Kedaragowla-Adi
7) Ramakathasudha-Madhyamavati-Adi
8) Kandu Enna-Behag
9) Mangalam

The concert started off with a beautiful Bowli Varnam of LGJ setting the pace of the concert and the response was evident from the audience appreciation. Gajamukhane sidhi Vinayaka of Vyasaraya (a rarely heard kriti) was sung with gusto and provided ample scope for the musician to bring out both raga bhava and lyrical beauty ( vidushi being a kannadiga) . The swara passages that follwed showed her control over laya and rhythmic aspects. She completed a beautiful set of swara passages with a nice korvai bringing the much expected cheers from he audience. Sri parthasarathy na came as a filler before she embarked on an elaborate Hamirkalyani which was rendered with aplomb. Gangeyavasana in Hamirkalyani was rendered and Natakapriya came as a surprise after Hamirkalyani because it seemed as though back to back a combination of not so common ragas. Iti samayamu brovaradha was chiselled with some nice and typical natakapriya phrases with a slightly complicated Chittaswaram at the end. Parakelanannu in Kedaragowla was a filler before the evergreen Madhyamavati and Smt.Vasuda rendered it with wide varieties. Ramakatha was the piece chosen for madhyamavati. There were quite a few rhythmic koraippus the artiste rendered capping it off with a fantastic korvai. Behag tukkada and Mangalam squared off a nice concert.

Padma Shankar as usual was her best and provided some soothing accompaniment and melodious raga renditions that enchanted the audience.

Anirudh Athreya was a good foil to my mridangam accompaniment.

It is, atleast to me, not in good light for the artist himself to write a review of a concert. Unless of course if the artist is in the audience rather on the stage.

???

mridhangam's reviews are a highlight of the forum - they offer a wonderful backstage look at the performance and provide numerous details and descriptive touches that are delightful to read.

There is no harm for artist to analyze his own music/playzing. I have seen artists maintaining blogs and write about their concert performance

For layman rasikas, and not so knowledgeable we get to know what exactly happened, and what did they sing/play with technical details.

Member muisicmighty If none of the rasikas take part in the concert to write a review about the concert that is happening I feel it right and justified in writing about the concert to give information about the items and also trying to share the onstage experience. Moreover you might have seen that i dont talk about myself in any of my reviews--> literally "I dont blow my own trumpet". another point is that I do write reviews after a considerable time lag of one or two days giving ample scope for other invisible rasikas who might have attended.

You are the first to write a review as an artist putting your name without the cloak of anonymity, in the sense you are don bradman of the forum , keep it going music is indeed more mighty than each of (y)our reviews put together.

Just a tiny bit of suggestion, you have put roughly 5 reviews yesterday, I usually feel it is just right to have 1 or max 2 reviews on a day for each of the reviewer. That way we all read each of them with little more attention , spacing is the key just like how you have tani in main and then rAgam of rtp . I usually pile up and type reviews and keep it in my notepad and save it , so you can also type all 5 in a row and save it in your local machine and then release one or two per day . Of course if you have constraints like you are traveling and not without access say for more than a week, you can do as you did yesterday. You have the most backlog for sure, I wish more people post before you post, your hands needs rest from the querty keyboard ;)

Rajesh while i am fully with you in your points actually i dont review each and every concert that i play i pick and choose and always wait during the concert for some spark of genius from the main artiste to kindle me into writing.

Personally i dont feel typing is a big problem with me as earlier i used to write with pen a lot and now like to type. I have posted all these reviews in one shot as i found the much needed time and space after quite a hectic month. Moreover the artistes need some reviews as we all know that one set of artistes are flocked by rasikas and reviewers and others are dumped into the invisible zone. Inorder to bring in some kind of respite for those invisible zoners i started writing to make sure that their name in the carnatic firmament doesnt go unheard and unwritten lest they might be written at a later date as "Unsung hero or unsung artiste". It creates a sort of document for the future generation and also tells the high quality of the invisible artistes who are not oft written and oft reviewd. While most of the rasikas take pride in attending a certain artiste's concert i take pride in making the unknown a known entity.

I think i am doing a great service.

mridhangam,
You are indeed doing a great service, personally I felt there is a slight chance that you have not understood clearly the intent of my previous post. We will discuss that in person ,we know each other too.

As I said you are indeed doing a great service, and it is indeed 100%. Keep them coming.

Balaji SIr,

During the recent 'Music Fourm' at Raga Sudha Hall on 11/10/2009, you were in full form, anticipating every step by Vidwan Mr. B.Krishnamurthy. You really made the programme enjoyable.

mridhangam,

I also make sure to write about new-entrants and other not-so-famous vidwans' performances on this forum if I like them. I may or may not write about famous vidwans' performances. For example I recently attended both Smt S Sowmya's and Sri T M Krishna's performances in the Tamil music festival, but wrote only about Smt Sowmya's performance, though I liked both. :)

Mr. Balaji,

I appreciate your points. However, as a member on stage performing with the main artiste of the day, it may not be an ideal situation for you to write a review as you cant be critical about the performance, if need be. Anyhow, many Chennai musicians write their own reviews under various name and almost certainly superlative always and what you do is more or less straight forward!

*I welcome Balaji reviewing the concert atleast for two reasons:-
He takes a dispassionate view .His review reflects the popular view of the audience as he keeps observing the reaction of the listeners.
* On occasions, he had pitched in to clarify in course of his review to avert a possible chance for embarassment to the artist-I had witnessed an instance where the organisers had requested to change an exclusive GNB prog to that one of a regular concert -to the disappointment of rasikas like me-but for his clarification all should have misunderstood the artist for having deviated from the theme.
*When you could not make it to the concert you had wanted to, his review comes handy!
Continue with your good work Balaji!
* Coming to the the concert of Vasudha Kesav -She is one who is going to create sensations in concert platform. The way she handled Natakapriya -I just wondered the seasoned artist Padma Sankar was (to me)looking concerned until she had given a good reply to the raga elaboration.

Nice to read your post, Balusatya.
I am adding one more name to 'listen to her/him this season' list.
Balaji's 'from the stage reviews' are read by many on the forum with interest because they add another dimension to concerts. He does not do it for his own glory but to bring news about the music of up and coming artistes and established performers too. It's always nice when someone from the audience (like you) adds the audience point of view and also describes Balaji's playing. I have no idea about other forums to know if there are any performer-reviewers elsewhere. I wish Erode will do it too more often (he is not just a highly proficient mrudangist--his poetry and prose have to br read to be appreciated). He and Balaji are very busy artistes. Even more the reason why I appreciate Balaji's reviews because he tries to find time to share the concerts with us.
