It was a very good concert. The first harikAmbhOji made a punchy beginning and it couldnt get better than dinamaNi vamsa. The choice of songs hence were all very good. The choice of AbhOgi and kalyANi for elaboration was very nice. She did them very well. The AbhOgi was very good. The kalyANi was very good and enjoyable. All kriti renditions were wonderful. The accompanists were very good and made it an wonderful concert. The violin replies and accompanying was amazing. The percussion department was handled well. The tani was wonderful.

Very good concert, hardly a dull moment. Very nice team work.
Composer-balanced list too. (I do like a bend towards SS.

I wouldnt call it tmk's technique. Semmangudi has sung many concerts starting with heavy pieces such as: Merusamana, Dinamani Vamsha, Sri Dakshinamoorthy, ect.rajaglan wrote:I think she follows TMK's technique of singing a populat krithi as a punch song first.

I have heard SSI 's concerts perhaps over a hundred, I haven't come across one begining with heavy pieces like Chekkani or Dakshinamurthy etc, except ofcourse Merusamana. MM gowla used as a opening number is a common practice( by many) and Merusamana is there more for the raga and not as a heavy one.Rasika911 wrote:I wouldnt call it tmk's technique. Can you highlight the 'many concerts' you are referring to?

Why does the number matter? i have even seen concerts open with a small tanam in nattai before mahaganapathim.
Singing varnam is definitely preferable but sometimes artists dont have very long to present a concert and want to get things moving quickly.
This is a results works to the rasikas advantage as we get to listen to more manodharmam throughout the concert.

As I entered this particular concert, Sangeetha and RKSK were in full flow of lovely swarams in harikambhoji. I doubt such an atmosphere can be built by a varnam for the beginning. That doesn't mean I don't like varNam beginnings, but I feel there are certain advantages offered by other kinds of openings too.
And as for meru samana, it's an awesome song to begin with, but then again, isn't it a waste of it to sing it in the beginning rather than as the main piece?
This can also be said of MMG in general.

I find more point in looking for "tradition" in other things than the kucheri format as such.

I agree very much with you on all three points (start krithi, MMG and format & tradition). This is one of the positive viewpoint I have come across in this more discussed topic.
