Req pl identify Ragam Variation in the Audio Clip

Post by Sundar Krishnan »

[Dt : 18th May, 2010 ]

A (Top) Violinist played the song : vara nArada in a recent Kutcheri. The audio clip can be heard by downloading from the sendspace url : http://www.sendspace.com/file/yg59s4

From 0:32 m to 0:54 m, the tune seems to take the tune from a popular Old Snake Charmers’ Tune song. I am curious to know if this is the normal way ie, the standard way to sing / play this song.
The lyrics of vara nArada is available at : http://www.karnatik.com/c2913.shtml.
Could someone pl let me know the exact line(s) in the lyrics that is being played out in the above time range of 0:32 m to 0:54 m.
Thanks – 1.

Also, could someone pl send me the song details of this popular Old Snake Charmers’ Tune song in Tamil. Thanks – 2.
I am not sure, but it is probably the Old Song : Adu Pambe Adu ? … [I don’t want the new, recent Malayalam film song.]

***************

PS 1: To verify, I listened to vara nArada by MS – in MIO site : Carnatic Concert Vol 2 -> mio://play/193062, but there, I could not listen to this Snake Tune – even in the AP line of the song.

PS 2 : http://www.karnatik.com/c2913.shtml states that Ragam VijayaShree is a janya of 47 – suvarNAn'gi.
What I have gathered (can’t recall the source) is the foll :

41 | pAvani…………….| S R1 G1 M2 P D2 N3 S | S N3 D2 P M2 G1 R1 S
vijayashrI….…......| 41 | S G1 R1 G1 M2 P N3 S | S N3 P M2 G1 R1 S

47 | suvarNAn'gi….….| S R1 G2 M2 P D2 N3 S | S N3 D2 P M2 G2 R1 S

Could someone pl let me know the correct Ar / Av of Ragam VijayaShree, and thereby, the correct Parent Ragam. Thanks – 3.

Yes, it sounds a little bit like that snake charming song between 0:32 to 0:54. I think it is mostly due to a similar up and down movement and the underlying similar layam.

The original snake song is supposed to be punnAgavarALi.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion from 0:32 m to 0:54 m in the Audio Clip.
But there were other queries too :

a) Could someone pl let me know the exact line(s) in the lyrics of vara Narada song that is being played out in the above time range of 0:32 m to 0:54 m in this Violin Audio Clip.
Thanks – 1.

b) Is this a standard or a popular feature of this song (of playing the Snake Charmer’s Tune) – specially when played in Instruments like the Violin or the Veena ?
Any url links where one can listen to others singing / playing this song in this special way - ie, with the snake tune in between ?

c) Lyrics of the Popular Old Snake Charmers’ Tune song (is it Adu Pambe Adu ?) in Tamil. Thanks – 2.

d) Would like to have a confirmation on PS 2 earlier ie, http://www.karnatik.com/c2913.shtml is probably wrong ? ; that vijayashrI is indeed derived from Pavani, and not from Suvranangi ??

*************

e) You mentioned PunnagaVarali.
Are you implying that the Old Tamil Song Adu Pambe Adu is in Ragam PunnagaVarali ?

f) I tried to look for possible clues for any similarities in the 2 Ragams’ signatures, but apparently, there seems to be lots of differences ie, they do not seem close - atleast in Ar / Av :

punnAgavarALi | 8| N2 , S R1 G2 M1 P D1 N2 | N2 D1 P M1 G2 R1 S N2 ,
vijayashrI |41| S G1 R1 G1 M2 P N3 S | S N3 P M2 G1 R1 S

An aside in (f) : Q : What does a comma “,” in the Ar or Av mean (as given in the notation for PunnagaVarali above) ? I can't recall the source from where I noted down the Ar / Av of many ragams.

Thanks
