I found this heart-rending version of Ponnin Oli by Sikkil Gurucharan (accompanied on the piano by Anil Srinivasan):

I was not recently so moved by one rendition. Kamban's poetry, this heady, intoxicating ragam are both a palpable hit. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I am. Would love to hear other renditions of this song and this ragam. Thanks!

That is the pathos inherent in the raga. Excellent presentation by Gurucharan.
In this context, it may be appropriate to mention that the pioneer in bringing Kambaramayanam to CM is Sri.TNS. Several of his songs are extremely moving. The Padhuka Pattabhishekam song "vimminan bharathanum" in Lalitha, Rama leaving to the forest "veyyon oli than meniyin" in amrithavarshini and finally Ravana's death in Subhapantuvarali are real master pieces in pathos. Anyone with a bit of knowledge in Tamil and CM cannot help being moved to tears. This song "ponnin oli" has also been presented by him but in the more sprightly Kurinji as the occasion is the entrance of Sita to the wedding hall, actually a very happy occasion.( I do not know why Sikkil selected the sad tune. However he has presented it very well indeed). In fact I am told that all those songs were set to music by Sri.TNS himself.

I like the kurinji version better, for the reason mentioned by KSSR...kurinji and weddings seem to be 'made for each other' (and Anandabhairavi too)! Smt. MSS has also recorded a whole bunch of kambanATALvAr's compositions - probably set to music by Kadayanallur Sri Venkataraman.
