TVSankaranarayanan at bhairavi puduchery.0n 13 june
T.V. Sankaranarayanan with his son sankara Mahadevan-Vocal
Nagai R,Sriram-Violin
Neyveli R.Narayanan- Mrudangam
Nerkunnam sankar- Kanjira.
Here is the list of songs of the concert:
1-Gajananam-Mohanam ( S)
2-O Jagadamba Anandha bhairavi- S. Sastri.
3-Sambho Mahadeva Panthuvarali-Thyagaraja (R.N.S.)
4-Raamabi Rama-Durbar-Thyagaraja
5-Maa Jaanaki- Kambhoji-Thyaga- (R N S )

9Srinivasa- hamsanandhi-Sivan
10-virutham in Behag and Simhendra madyamam followed by Eppovaruvaro-Jonpuri
11- note.
12-virutham in Sindubhairavi
13-Mangalam-Sowrashtram –Suruti.
This is typical MMI menu with all its ingredients which was relished by the audience.
The fluency in the release of the cascades of Swaras woven into complex patterns has always been TVS’s forte and it was evident inthis concert also.
Sankar Mahadevan has been well trained in this baani by his father. His voice has been merging with his father’s so well that during the swara singing relays the transfer from father to son is almost imperceptible.
Nagai SriRam’s violin accompaniment was apt and to the point
Neyveli Narayanan enhanced the listening pleasure by his “sol sutham†and crisp moras. The thani between him and the kanjira nerkunnam sankar ( disciple of Harisankar) was enjoyable.

Thank you for the review. Really an enthralling experienc.Audience were
spell-bound on that day.One of the old ladies told me that her deisre to listening to Madurai Mani Iyer baani was fulfilled that day. All artists did full justice that day.
Your review makes us slowly understand some of the technical points of kutcherry especially the Thani avarthanam. Keep it up.
Dear Carnatic music lovers, please click http://bhairavimusiccircle.blogspot.com/ for the photos of Padmabushan T.V.Sankaranarayana's Programme on 13th June at Bhairavi, puducherry.

Sankara Mahadevan has officially changed his name as Mahadevan Sankaranarayanan, so that it does not get confused by the other popular Shankar Mahadevan.Ponbhairavi wrote:T.V. Sankaranarayanan with his son sankara Mahadevan-Vocal

Re: TVSankaranarayanan at bhairavi puduchery.0n 13 june
The name change is due to a generational shift. In earlier times the sons were using their given names (Mahadevan in this instance) using the father's given name as the first initial (S for Sankaranarayanan in this case). When asked to expand the initial, that is how Sankaranarayana Mahadevan came into being. The current trend (in the last 30-40 years or so) is to bring the given name of the person (Mahadevan) in front of the father's name, which is used as the last name (a practice used in the north and west). In all future generations the father's name will become a permanent last name for all progeny to come. The so-called last name used in the north was mostly a caste/clan name. ThamizhnADu shed that caste name such as Iyer, Iyengar, Sastry, Sarma, mudaliyar, piLLai etc., by the turn of the last century. Now it is making a comeback--especially there are lot of Iyer surnames floating nowadays even in the US.

In this case, Sankara is in fact his pet name, being called at home. Mahadevan is his first name. Hence originally Sankara Mahadevan, due to the confusion with his namesake, changed to the current form of MS.

Vidwan TV ShankaranArayanan has a certain brand as he is a vidwan of repute .Possibly the main reason for changing his name to mahadevan shankaranarayanan is to ensure that TVS legacy is recalled instantly.kssr wrote: Sankara Mahadevan has officially changed his name as Mahadevan Sankaranarayanan, so that it does not get confused by the other popular Shankar Mahadevan.
May be his name in records used to be S. Sankaramahadevan which when changed to firstname lastname would be sankaramahadevan sankaranarayanan would have sounded odd as there is too many sankara's

On a side note , if some body assumes this carnatic shankar mahadevan as the bollywood shankar mahadevan, that is really nice as he gets more fresh face rasikas.Of course there is a slight chance that they will come to the concert and leave after two songs as they would have thought the bollywood shankar mahadevan is not singing carnatic.

Mahalingam,
Thanks for the pictures of the concert which was a special one for Puduchery vAsis.. Father and son look nice together on stage.
Gives us an idea of an old hall in Puduchery. Perhaps progressive ideas were exchanged in the hall once--which makes me think of BArati and his 'tUNil azhagiyadAm' imagery comes to mind. Perhaps old Puduchery has a lot of such buildings with pillars being an integral part of them. I did not have a chance to see the interior of any halls during my visit to your town which I liked very much.

Continuously for the last 28 years, i.e. from 1982, the monthly carnatic music programmes of Bhairavi are held in a heritage house, built in hybrid Indo-French style that is unique to Puducherry. The acoustics of the mutram-thalvaram-koodam area of building are excellent and the ambiance is ideal for carnatic music. Though it was built for residential purpose and was being used as such, subsequently it was turned into a school premises. Presently a school named 'societe progressiste' is functioning in the building.
A photograph of this beautiful building taken in 1898 can be seen in google images if a search is made for 'societe progressiste'.
Of course, there are several such houses in Puducherry. Many of them still continue to be residential houses, and a few have been put to commercial use -- as heritage hotels/art galleries/banks.

The hall with large wooden pillars is amazing. However the sparse audience for such a great artist is a bit disappointingV.Mahalingam wrote:

It is not at all disappointing, for we have a select audience. And Bhairavi kutcheries are akin to chamber music!

Yes, they seemed like an attentive audience.
Does number count that much? Take for instance the Rasikas concerts. For the number of rasikas who are there in Chennai, only a handful attend, yet, they turn out to be very good concerts.

Normally organisers would like to have maximum possible attendance, whether it is a ticketed or non ticketed concert. The effort is same whether 50 or 500 people attend. Definitely the artists would prefer to have a large and knowledgeable audience for all their preparation and effort in presenting the concert.Only venue should be such to avoid a stampede/parking problems, etc.,
I cannot think of any reason for the organiser to prefer a small audience ( unless snacks and coffee are to be organised for the rasikas

As rightly pointed out by arasi the number does not matter. What matters is how attentive they are and how they enjoy the concert. I am proud to inform that almost all the musicians, at the end of the concert always appreciate the rasikas present for the rapt attention with which they listen and especially the discipline they follow by not gossiping while the concert is on.
We send the intimation letter to all members and most of them attend.
