srkris - my experience has been that Palghat Iyer types tend to say 'Sari' (S as in Sivan), not 'Shari' (Sh as in Shanmukhapriya).
While on this sa-Sa-Sha-Cha topic, I used to know a Tamilian family during my days in Bombay. Their elderly mother used to say 'sappaati' for chappati. 'sappAti sAppuTTuTTu pOngo!' she would say. I found it quite amusing.
