Basically it belongs to the realm of Hindustani Music and became popular in CM. a shadava-sampoorna janya raga derived from 20th mela - Natabhairavi.(Asavari thaat of HM) The scale is SRMPDNS - SNDPMGRS. This raga is believed to have got its name from Sultan Sharqui of Jounpur who is believed to have discovered this raga.

Re; jaunpuri--to get different flavors of the raga adopted by CM Musicians,there is a diverse list of songs--Generally this belongs in the Thukkada section in a CM concert-(I am afraid even before the "digital-ink" gets "dry" there may be one upstart innovator challenging my statement and may start rendering the Raga as RTP in his/her next concert!just to repudiate my statement!!!
Ofcourse the famous one is Eppo Varuvaro(Gopalakrishna Bharathi)--listen to the MMI as well as KVN versions of this song,Tapatsya Kausalya (GNB),Avatharam Seiduveere(Tiruppavai ARI),Parthu Pizhaiyungal(I think Veda Nayagam Pillai-- sung by Semmangudi),Parukule Nalla Nadu(Bharathi--MMI/DKP and now Sudha R(in one of her CD's).,Velan Varuvarodi(DKP)
In the Cine world(going back 50/60 years-MKT (Sathvaguna Bodhan),TMS(Nadagamellam Kanden Undan Adum Vizhiyile),Sirkhazhi Govindarajan(Malaye Un nilaye Nee Parai in the movie Vanangamudi).

Each of these songs in my opinion expose a certain facet of the raga.

Now that a simple question has been turned into a mini-investigative report on the Raga--most of which was totally unsolicited --after the query itself was nicely and deftly handled by Hariniraghavan, I am sure Hanquil would think twice before asking for any Raga's Lakshana.
