TM Krishna @ NGS 2/1/11

Post by MV »

1) Maa Janaki - Kamboji (N,KS)
2) Varuvaro - Sama - GK Bharathi
3) Eti Janma - Varali (R,N, KS)
4) Vaa Muruga Vaa - Begada (I think by R. Venugopal)
5) Janakipathe - Kharaharapriya (R,KS, Thani)
6) Eppo Varuvaro - Jonpuri (KS)
7) English Note on Request
8) Mangalam

I haven't been near a computer for 2 days and was surprised to see no review from a packed hall. So, here is my 2 cents..

TMK found his groove in Varali ragam and didn't look back. Eti Janma ranks very high in my favourite list and he did full justice to it. Niraval at Sagara Shayana, the second charanam- was soothing and swarams in 1st kalam only was appropriate. He played with the emotions and the swaraksharams at "Saa-gara" . Kharahapriya ragam was extensive lasting over 15 minutes and violin return was good with some catching phrases. I was expecting an RTP and I thought it would be a detailed one but Janakipathe was well done with brisk swarams. The evening ended quickly with TMK's favourite (?) Eppo Varuvaro.

The thani-specially from Karaikudi Mani ( I don't remember the Ghatam artiste's name) was simply outstanding. Great way to finish the 2010 Season for me.

Ghatam is by V. Suresh , a terrific ghatam artist . How long was the tani, Usually KM's tani is very long?

Yes, Suresh is very good. I haven't heard him in a while. A friend of Nick too.

TMK sang it as VaruvaRo not VaruvaNo.
I didn't keep track of the thani time but it was long and brilliant!

Ravi, I have never heard the "varuvano" version. Do you know of a specific performer who sings it this way?
