Lakshman/Meena,

Could you please post the lyrics for raghupati rAghava rAjA rAm.

RE: vaishnava jana to
I also need the word by word meaning for vaishnava jana to by Narsi Mehta.

On Gujaratonline website, there is a 2 minute clip of this song.
Do you know who sings this song? It is very nice.

Thanks for your help.

Laxmi

Lakshmi,
The version of this rAm dhun we were taught is:

raghupati rAghav rAjA rAm
patit (can be sung as patIt) pAvan sItA rAm
ISvar allAh tErO nAm sabkO sanmati dE bhagvAn

A refrain of 'sItA rAm jay sItA rAm, bhaj pyArE tU sItA rAm' is added by many who sing this dhun. Some add 'rAm lakshmaN jAnkI, jay bOlO hanumAn kI'.

Kji,
Is this dhun sung in miSra gharA?

VAISHNAVA JANATO

Sam-drishti ne trishna tyaagi
Par-stree jene maat re
Jivha thaki asatya na bole
Par-dhan nav jhaalee haath re

Moh-maaya vyaape nahi jene
DriDh vairaagya jena man maan re

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Translation â€"
One who is a vaishnav
Knows the pain of others
Does good to others, esp. to those ones who are in misery
Does not let pride enter his mind

A Vaishnav, Tolerates and praises the the entire world
Does not say bad things about anyone
Keeps his/her words, actions and thoughts pure
O Vaishnav, your mother is blessed (dhanya-dhanya)

A Vaishnav sees everything equally, rejects greed and avarice
Considers some one else's wife/daughter as his mother
The toungue may get tired, but will never speak lies
Does not even touch someone else's property

A Vaishnav does not succumb to worldly attachments
Who has devoted himself to stauch detachment to worldly pleasures
Who has been edicted to the elixir coming by the name of Ram
For whom all the religious sites are in the mind

Who has no greed and deciet
Who has renounced lust of all types and anger
The poet Narsi will like to see such a person
By who's virtue, the entire family gets salvation

Lakshmi,
I am donning Meena's hat here: please try a simple google search before you ask Lji or Meena to delve into their collections for postings here.
A simple, 'lyrics and meaning of vaishnav jantO', brought up several pages, and this is probably the best for your purpose:
http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopi ... c08bb33547

A very kind soul has provided the translation that you asked on the second page of this thread.
If you have questions about specifc words, we can try to help.

Thanks Ravi, Lakshman and cmlover. I am sorry for not googling first.

We used to sing ragupathi raghava at school too. I recall a line that went like " Kousalya ke pyAre rAm ..........
but don't rememebr the rest of the words. Somehow I thought the song had a couple more lines.

RE: Vaishnava jana to -my knowledge of hindi is very limited. And with that I am trying to understand Gujarati.

We want to teach these two songs to a group of children to perform for Gandhi Jayanthi.

What does the following words mean?

tene kahiye je

maan

does sahune mean tolerate?

Does re mean who or one who?

Thanks

cmlover, thanks for the pre-independance day version. I read somewhere that Gandhiji changed the lyrics to "Iswara Allah"
to promote harmony.

Laxmi,

AFAIK:
tene or tENe = them
kahiyE = call (them)
je = who

sakala lOk maan - in that context, maan is like mein in hindi (=in) and the problem comes from trying to use a script other than dEvnAgari or gujrAti..the 'n' at the end of the word is not fully pronounced.

sahune = (one who) tolerates

With all due respect, there is a problem here.
Sahune does not mean one who tolerates. it means "to all or to every one"
Salak Lok Ma sahune Vande means in the whole world he (Vaishnav) respects everyone.
"Vaishnav Janot tene re kahiye": "Re is just a word added to tene to keep the meter. One can also take the meaning that "tene re" means only that one. Vaishnav jan (Vaishnav Person) to tenere kahiye (can only be called) je pid parayi jane re (one who understands and empathozes with the pain and suffering of others) For the purpose of dance or singing, don't wotrry about "re". It is added to keep the meter right.
