pAN to Ragam Eqlnce ?, pAlai, grama, thAT etc

Post by Sundar Krishnan »

1) http://www.shaivam.org/gallery/audio/sat_pp2.htm lists audio clips of 99 Tevaram songs [1 + 98 = {53 (Sambandar) + 27 (Appar) + 18 (Sundarar)}].
Under the column “pAN”, it mentions about 25 ? / 26 ? / 27 ? “paNs”. In a few cases below, based on listening to the corrresponding Audio clip, I have given my guess of the corresponding contemporary Ragam name also. Pl let me know of any corrections.

Through this list, I would like to have the contemporary Ragam name (based on the actual audio song clip) for ALL the corresponding pANs.

The list of 25 ? / 26 ? / 27 ? distinctive “paNs” that I collected is as follows :

1) naTTapADai = Nattai ?
2) thakkarAgam (same as = TakkEshi ?) = Kambhoji ?
3) piyandhaig gAndhAram
4) pazhampanjuram
5) shIkAmaram
6) kuRinjci
7) inthaLam
8.) kaushikam = Bhairavi ?
9) gAn^dhAra panychamam
10) chAdhari
11) pazhantakkarAgam
12) kolli (what is the diff wrt kollik kauvANam below ?)
13) mEgarAgak kuRinyci
14) viyAzhakkuRinjci
15) naTTarAgam
16) yAzhmuri = Attana ?
17) maRumARRat-TiruththANDakam
18) Tanit-TirukkuRuntogai
19) TirunErisai = Shuddha Dhanyasi ?
20) gAndhAram
21) Tiruviruttam
22) TirukkuRunTogai
23) TiruththANDakam
24) Periya TiruththANDakam
25) kollik kauvANam (same as kolli above ?)
26) panycamam = near Ahiri ?
27) mullai ?? :
Can’t see “mullai”under pAN column in this site …sat_pp2.htm, but “mullai-p-pann” is mentioned in http://www.shaivam.org/english/sen_th12_anayar.htm

Elsewhere, in this Forum, and other related links, I have read something to the effect that pAN is equivalent to Raagam, and pAlai is equivalent to the Musical Scale. Could you pl confirm this.

1-a) If pAN is equivalent to Raagam, what are the contemporary Ragam names for EACH the above pANs ?

1-b) Is it possible to get the names of the above “pAN”s in Sanskrit lipi ?
English, even with Transliteration, often doesn’t afford correct pronounciation ; Tamil has only one alphabet representing 4, again making it difficult to pronounce unless you already know the exact Tamil pronounciation of those word(s) !

1-c) Are there any more pANs than listed above ?

I have a few other related queries on the same topic, and wrt the same 2 shaivam.org links - which I will post in the subsequent msgs.
