Changampuzha Samskarika Kendram, as the title implies, is a multi-faceted cultural centre established in the name of one of Kerala’s most celebrated modern poets, Changampuzha Krishna Pillai. It is situated in a two-acre park established and named after the great poet in Edappally, Kochi, where he spent most of his creative years tending the muses, and has his final resting place. The Changampuzha Samskarika Kendram (CSK) is conveniently located just five km. from Ernakulam Town, on the main road to Aluva and has idyllic surroundings that give an ambiance appropriate to its reputed cultural ethos.

If I were on the organizing committee, I would make sure this is announced as a motto, with sincerity, at the end of every round to reinforce and raise the spirit of every participant. Not *one* should leave the program *at any stage* feeling belittled or dejected. While only one may "win" - due to logistics, the larger pursuit of CM is not about winning but how to perform. Every participant who has come to brave the show with all its twists, turns and unpredictable demands, has won through their earnest endeavor to pursue CM, dedicating their valuable time.

I am in a way fortunate to see your programmes on Jaya TV but not regular because of my time limitations of official duties. I most of the times when I cannot see depend on Mr.Venkatakailasam channel for most of the recordings.

My thots on the MC - I think we dont want to have another person in there who is very proficient in Carnatic music, like a mridangist etc... The participants hear a lot of 'technical' stuff from the judges and their teachers and its a good idea to have someone like the current MC who will kinda keep it 'light' and humorous and easy-going! He does get carried away with personal comments but maybe that's all he needs to work on! A talkative MC is reqd for this program!

I liked anathita's singing...has a nice classicism about it. Unfortunate she didn't win anything but that is the nature of competitions. The fact of the matter is that she didn't perform well in the finals. Even sachin tendulkar can't score a hundered in every match!

My thots on the MC - I think we dont want to have another person in there who is very proficient in Carnatic music, like a mridangist etc... I think we need a "Dr.Watson" person on the show. If the idea of the show is to make CM accessible and popular beyond its current smallish reach, you need someone there who is apparently even more confused than the average lay rasika, and keeps making mistakes or asking the contestants for clarifications on what they were asked, what they were thinking, what was hard etc., The casual listener can then get some better understanding of some of the intricacies, and hopefully, begin to get hooked. This will also make the contestants feel good even if they have been eliminated.

I personally thought the judges did a great job, and it is really they who have made the show what it is, especially Sri NSG and Sri Ganesh-Kumaresh. The tongue-in-cheek improvs and the hosts excess come with the territory of a prime time reality show. The participants, while talented, did not perform as a superior and prepared "carnatic music idol" - excepting Raghavendra. I found it baffling that the swaroopa of ragams like vasantha bhairavi or purvi kalyani remained tough for some of them - while others just did not show the ability to think on their feet. Sri TNS's final comments were very noteworthy, and conveyed the message that the weight of their own music is what will stand their musical future in good stead.

And finally, I personally find the constant comparison and allusion to malayalam, asianet's carnatic programs and etc by members on here quite annoying....I have seen Hariharan's program too, and i find it quite grating that each singer comes on there and sings Hari/Sharath's praises. Ultimately the measure is in the people's choice, and their voice has spoken judging by how popular the show is.

Hello Mahesh3 : Raghavendra performed well during prelims, semi's and finals too. It doesnt mean others do not have the potential and caliber!!
I would really insist, above all these mathematical and mental games that judges are playing against the contestants .. they should also conduct a 'full fledged concert round' ( may be 1+ hour ) and then evaluate the contestants!

1.I dont think Asianet has ever conducted a carnatic program..! ( Amrita TV you meant?)
2. The word 'comparison' comes into picture you feel a difference in quality ( just as you judged Raghavendra on top of others)

Yea, I meant Amritha TV. The comparison of these programs with Carnatic Idol sucks, coz Hariyudan Naan and that Amritha TV program dont even come close on the watchability index. As for quality of those programs, i wont comment. As for a full fledged concert round, this could be done for the top 3 or maybe just the top 2. The rest were really not upto the mark. I understand that they have the potential etc and should be encouraged, but really a one hr round on prime time is not the place for that. I like the pallavi type spot-on questions, as opposed to the "full kruthi" coz then people would memorize and vomit.....something the amritha tv program was guilty of! Additionally, its not just abt contestants singing but also educating the audience on the intricacies that a carnatic performer needs to be proficient in, which I think the judges did in a splendid way. Kudos.

What we all saw in the tv is only edited version of the finals. Only if you see the thing live you can make out who were all good.
Actually there were some parts by Anahita,nandini and ishwarya that were not shown .Raghavendra when he was asked to do tisram for the 2nd chittaswaram of nattakkurinji varnam could not start for sometime.then the judges asked him to do chatusram and go to tisram.then only he could do it. The pallavi he presented was a beautiful swarakshara pallavi.Sari saMAnama saBHApathe saDAsiva. His MA went to panchamam,bha to nishadam dha to shadjam.Then they pointed to him the swaraksharam and he tried and again went to his original.
This pallavi was sung by sri.T.R.S. in kerala during late 70s and i had a recording which i have heard a number of times.
So by only seeing a small portion on the screen one cannot come to the conclusion
They should have allowed the judges who came for the finals to ask some questions.As one of he judges told they were only asked to give marks.
Also there is no rule The Idol should be a male.girls were also equally talented and we who attended the finals know that.

Malavi, your point is that Aishwarya, nandini and anahita's sections were not shown coz they were women? Really? In addition to the zillion other bizarre claims on this thread, you have subtly added one more by randomly stating "that there is no rule the idol should be a man"! Bravo!

Also, I think it was obvious to everyone that the program was edited, but thanks for stating the obvious once more.

Additionally, doing tisram is different from being asked to sing vasanthabhairavi or purvikalyani. Its not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Finally, I think the judges who were asked to convene the contest were the "judges" and the others were there as a jury. Its a great concept, and I think having a "free-for-all" would have messed up the integrity of the contest.

Well, your claim that all is well, fine and dandy with the format AS IS, the way the show is conducted, the "judges", the "integrity", the "popularity" of the "Idol" show justifying it all, the ends and the means, the Amrita TV equivalent being the pits etc. -- is a little hard to digest, pardon me, judging from several POVs other than yours.

I wonder how the evaluations were done. I assume they used (probably) a 10 point scale and cumulated the scores to arrive at the rankings. At one point Balaji mentioned that Raghavendra was 20points ahead of his closest runner up. I also assume the judges and 'jury' were given equal weightage. To be fair they may have been scored separately on knowledge, presentation, poise etc., and a weighted average may have been worked out though that is complicated. Thus the overall generic ranking by the experts is indeed generic and each may have weighted different aspects differently. In view of the large number of evaluaters all differences may have averaged out and perhaps the 'judgement' is indeed fair. However there is just one hitch. Raghvendra is better known to the chennai-based evaluvaters and there could have been an unconscious bias. Vishnu and Nandini are unknowns and clearly were at a disadvantage. I agree with one of you suggesting that each could have been invited to give a one hour concert and ranked on that basis in addition to the generic ranking added and then averaged. We also would have been more openly exposed to their talents and skills. At any rate the cream rises to the top. We will know in the next five years who is the best among these contestants provided they are given a good shake though Ragahvendra has been given a head start.

Let the 'real' competition begin now.

Shyama-priya, I disagree with your distortion! After i found you repeatedly bemoan the Jaya TV program and pointing out the merits of amritha tv's program, I merely chose to disagree with your characterization, as opposed to saying it is the "pits"! Secondly, my POV is to improve the quality of the candidates as opposed to tinkering with the show or the judges. I think the quality of candidates will improve as a natural progression, as I have observed even with American Idol over several seasons. So far, this thread has mostly been that of folks who seem disgruntled that their faves did not win, and/or utilize the opportunity to bring out their per peeves of the judges themselves.....therefore, my pOV is infact different than yours. I am not asking you to digest my POV (I dont really care abt alignment)....all i am trying to do is to neutralize the agenda that seems to be the motive of some folks on here...which includes subtle and not-so-subtle digs at the show, the organizers, judges and their performance...

I am very much eager to see how these kids would perform in the December season ( i hope the 15 odd sabhas mentioned by 'VVV' do provide them with the opportunity to showcase ther talent). Answering the bullets from the judges is one thing , effectively presenting a concert and makng it a success is another.

I am not any contestant or anything.I am just a rasika and musician who knows enough of music to write some comments.what i wnted to point out was after seeing ithe edited version we cannot come to any conclusion.also i said girls were equally talented.in my first message after the finals i mentioned about ganesh kartik also who didnt get any prize but was only a finalist.some of us who went for the show together felt sorry for him.

Vishnu, I would be remiss if I didn't say this emphatically enough.

The highlight of the entire show for me (all 20+ episodes) was your execution of the kalpanaswarams for the charanam in the KAnadA varnam. Great question and great response. That incident alone will stand you in good stead in the minds of rasikas for years to come.

Keep up the great work! Hope to see you in the next music season.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Jaya TV for a show of this nature.

A few comments on commenting and providing feedback "decently":

Would it be asking for too much from the producers to require that the judges refrain from personal attacks on attire or gestures but judge the music that the contestants produce? The "Idol" in the title need not turn every judge into a Simon Cowell.

The producers are from our own country and have been producing - and very well at that - shows with CM as the focus. Thanks for such effort. However, I find it strange that we rasikas have to highlight comments - by certain judges - that are reprehensible. I mean, some in a pair of trousers is as capable of singing a great Sahana as the one in a panchakacham. I know that this has been repeated ad nauseum but one cannot stress enough the importance of not letting attire distract our musical sensibilities. If appearance played such a big part, I am sure each of us can name at least five artistes who are unbearable to watch but heavenly to listen to.

Punning is the pet passion (along with alliteration, perhaps?) of our musicians from time immemorial. Lowest form of humour, maybe, but if it is not crude, one can live with it. A pun can be the spice of wit but not the soul.

I hope these comments were "decent" and are taken in the right spirit. After all, in these days of instant communication and lesser attention span, it is easy to read between the lines and to miss the woods for the trees.

Hoping that the programme continues to be successful and a certain finesse and elegance accompanies the fight for TRP.
