Smt Vedavalli is sick and this show was cancelled. one of her students is singing. went all the way and disappointment.

Sumittra Vasudev sang instead of Smt Vedavalli with the same accompaniment. She did a decent job. I've heard her before at Nadasurabhi and she sings pretty well.

I liked the concert - it was a pure classical fare - with lots of songs (and ragas) not so often heard or known to me (such as sindu mandari). There was slokam in natai that she began before the varnam. I enjoyed the Saveri and Kalyani very much. The pallavi was complex and some of the complexities went over my head! Jayan - 2nd swaram i thought was sama - is it the same as Shyama that you mentioned (probably dikshitar school?) or are there nuances? I wish the YK was longer....
Accompanists were very good - vioin returns and tani were nice. I felt that the volume of the vocalist could have been a tad higher - with the noise of the fans....

The artiste had big shoes to fill, which I thought she did very well. I sincerely hope that Vidushi Vedavalli performs in Bangalore. It is our loss that we don't get to hear her music here.

Slokam - missing was Keeravani, and I thought Kapi not desh.

It was a decent concert. Kalyani was the highlight.
I felt the voice has to be little bit more powerful ( can't describe it otherwise).

Arun Prakash provided great support. He did go into hibernation now and then.
His playing was very good. The thani with Sukhanya Ramgopal on Ghatam was very enjoyable.

Yeah... I too thought it was Kapi. I could be wrong about the slokam - the audio was coming alive then.

Sumithra is an artist of considerable talent. She has not only sat at Smt Vedavalli's feet for over twenty years, but supported her on stage for I-don't-know-how-long (she once told me she had never seen her teacher from the the audience!).

Sure, the cancellation of a Vedavalli concert is heartbreaking, but I usually run for Sumithra's concerts too. I confess that I am missing one this evening for the sake of seeing the senior, Suguna P. sing: I'm sure Sumithra would understand that, but I do hope she gets a good audience.

One's marked * are not commonly sung. Vid. Sumithra sang this at MA during last year music season and coming from Bangalore - was surprised to hear it in Chennai! BTW - this basavanna vachana is part of the standard curriculum we went through in our schooling

Best wishes for Smt. Vedavalli's speedy recovery! Hope it is just a minor illness. What little I have heard of Smt. Sumitra has been very good.
G_G, that vacana is wonderful....I like it how Sri Basavanna refutes that fact that Siva is a lover of music and the chanting of the vEdas using the examples of rAvaNa and brahmA.
