Vidwan Vijaya Siva @ BVB - live blog

Post by sureshvv »

started with a slokam but mike amplification was too low and most of it was inaudible.

Neelayadakshi in paras was the opening gambit. Been a while since i heard this and was nicely done and voice seemed to be in good form.

Inta kannanandamemi in bilahari followed. Neraval & swaras at nee bhajamula

Now a soaring pantuvarali alap with fast knife edge brighas

after a quick detection of the slightly out-of-tune tambura between the pair of accompanying tamburas and adjustment, ramanatham bhajeham presented with gusto

now neraval at kumara guruguha mahitam

forgot to mention that the fast paced swaras in bilahari had many characteristic "ga ga"s carefully strung together sounding absolutely sensational

Devagandhari alap just beginning..

vittal ramamurthy's bilahari swaras were very pleasing... Didn't have the same punch in pantuvarali may be because he played too low

Enneramum undhan is the kriti being presented now

the clear diction and feeling with which the charanams were sung drew some aahas from the the bustling crowd...

Now a fast manasuloni marmamulu presented as filler

Smt. DKP used to sing this - it describes the preparations for the wedding for rAma and sItA (villai murittiDum vallavanukkenru vAkiTTu, nalla vAkiTTu...). IIRC, it has reference to a 'tirumaNa kurippu'.

How was the crowd? Was it rumbustuous? --- that was the word I was getting confused with the one you used on a previous live-blog, but my brain didn't tell me that until now.

Anyway: I wish I had been there. I went to see G S Mani, not realising that it was only 5% song and 95% talk. There was nothing at all wrong with the talk, only with my ability to understand. Still enjoyed his voice!

You are most welcome! Enjoyed it immensely :-)

You are right! But I have to confess that I could not really get into it, may be because I was hearing it for the first time. Also, the quick raga changes and the folksy delivery of them didn't help.

Nick.. You should know by now that I would never use such a pompous sounding word, especially when the dictionary doesn't contain it ;-)

Anyways, rambunctious would be appropriate for the Mylapore species (homing area: BVB, easily identified by the full length snake gourd that they carry into the concert hall) while the T.Nagar variety (homing area: Ayodya mandapam, marked by liberal amounts of religious make-up) is more aptly described as raucous!

'Tis in the dictionary! ;)

Well, it would be if I hadn't mis-spelt it :$. Seems it should be -ious, which certainly looks better. It is in my Concise Oxford. It is qualified as colloquial, though, so if you want to go 'formal-English' on me, then I shall have to concede :)

I'm curious to know your choice of word for our usual meeting place (missed you at Sumithra's concert), Ragasudha? How about Sastri Hall?

I've heard that BVB is so hard to get into for the evening concerts, in the season, that it is necessary to go to the afternoon performance too just to get a seat. Maybe the person who told me that had not thought of fighting their way in with a snake gourd!

Enjoying this thread, nice blog, thank you, Suresh.

It's a new word to me too, odd that there should be two rather similar sounding words to mean exactly the same thing!

Looked it up, was amused to see the misspelling, and was looking forward to Nick's red face :).

And your smiling face ;)
Better arm myself with a snake gourd if I'm going there for a concert.

Suresh,
Hope we meet somewhere...if you recognize me, please say hello.

Really, these days, it's best not to go anywhere without a snake gourd ...
